    I was intrigued by the Private Client Holdings and their bid for the stage, but then had to settle for the men's race HL instead. 

    Don't you love how Supersport will wait for the moment Van Der Poel makes his attack, then promptly show you the Cecil Nurse and Marriott Investment Managers ads? :P

    Showing the HL package while there is live racing on the go is equally tone-deaf.

  3. Why all the punctures when it rains? Does the rain spill gunk into the road that would normally have been cleared by the traffic? Or do people hit more cracks/holes/cateyes because of the poor visibility?

    Rain wreaks havoc with your headunit's barometer. It gets blocked by water and your reading becomes inaccurate.

     

    I think you can do an elevation correction in Strava?

    Even though I always ride with it, my UT800 annoys me plenty. 

    It fiddles the light brightness way too often, especially when riding in groups where others have lights.  The battery life is short.  It takes forever to charge and it needs to be charged after every ride.

    I hope they improve the design on the next iteration.  The smart light and control via ANT+ concept is awesome.  Daylight visibility mode is fantastic.

     

    Regarding the RTL515 - best piece of kit I own.  The greatest step forward in rider safety this decade.

  7. Slightly more noisy than the Core, but still quieter than your fan and your drivetrain.  Significantly quieter than the H1/H2.

     

    Other than that it is probably the best trainer for doing structured workouts in ERG mode as it can shift between target powers more seamlessly than any other trainer.

     

    For the price I'd go H3

  8. Perhaps I misunderstood but the message was that the fluid that came out did not appear to be Shimano OEM fluid. I don't know. I have done brakes on cars more times than I care to count but never on a bicycle.

    If you've performed a bleed on a car a bicycle will be a breeze. You should try doing it yourself. I suspect some bike shops don't do a full bleed unless absolutely necessary, which ends up being a "go back to the shop a few times because I still need to pump the brake" type of exercise before it is done properly.

  9. Hi, I'm interested in getting a 4iiii single sided power meter.

     

    I would like to find out what your experience has been with using it and the reliability of it.

     

    As well in your experience what is the life time of such a power meter? 2 years? 4 years?

     

    Great product for the price.  Better than the Stages in terms of dropouts.  Been using for 3 years with no complaints.

     

    Obviously dual-sided would have been nicer, but so expensive.

  10. I use the SRAM AXS Force sequential shifting mode which I find very useful

    I have a 33-46T with a 10-33 cassette.

     

    I find that when down shifting from say a 46T 17 to an easier gear , the sequential shift chooses up to the 46T 28 before dropping to the small 33T chainring choosing a 33T 24

     

    The 46T 28 causes a really bad chain alignment and seems extreme....why this choice by SRAM when using sequential shifting and is there any way to make it drop from the 46T to the 33T sooner when downshifting?

     

    Had similar issue on Di2.  For reference, I was using 50-34 with 11-28 11sp.

     

    Etube allows you to make adjustments to a small degree.  On the upshift (from the 34 to the 50) I was always happy, but the other way around (50 to 34 shift) it wouldn't allow me to specify any lower than after engaging the 25t sprocket.  That's some pretty bad cross-chaining.  Yours sounds even worse.

     

    Ultimately I switched to semi sequential, or Semi Synchro shift in Shimano speak.  Initially two sprockets of adjustment but later just one.  I'm happier now.

  11. Having used Squirt lube for the last 4 years, I’ve noticed recently that my drivetrain seems to become dirtier than normal.

    Cleaning the cassette, chain and chainring has become a messy affair, as there is now a waxy residue left behind.

     

    Has anyone else noticed this? Has the formula changed maybe?

     

    I haven't observed a change from before but agree it gets the drivetrain dirty quickly.  Still a great lube.

     

    If you are the type that keeps adding more lube to a dirty chain and the drivetrain is only cleaned by the shop every time the bike is serviced - Squirt is the way to go.  Maybe try to wipe the chain off with a cloth before adding lube now and again.  Baby steps.  Squirt does the job even if it isn't pretty.

     

    If you are an obsessive degreaser like me you should look elsewhere.  I clean the drivetrain properly after every long ride, which usually means once a week.  I like my chain/cassette shiny and QUIET.  Currently using Smoove which is well-suited to this type of abuse.  I suspect there are some fancy lubes that would work even better.

  12. I'm pretty impressed that some guy rides around with a Laser printer, a power source to drive it, a  sheet of paper and a plastic sleeve so he can demand to speak to the manager whenever he finds his route obstructed.

    Sounds more realistic than the alternative of returning to the gate the next day to attach your letter.

     

    Surely 24 hours later you should have calmed down and reflected upon how irrational your outrage is?

    For the last 8000 years more damage has been done by the self-appointed gatekeepers of morality and their concerns for societal decline than by societal decline itself.

     

     

    These amazing trails are open to the public and made possible by private donations to the Stellenbosch Trail Fund.  Mr Schutte claims to have been riding them for more than 20 years.  Hopefully, as a trail user calling out Trail Builder/Farmer/Developer for signage he doesn't approve of, he donates regularly.  Or perhaps this is just one of those unreasonable fellows that typically don't do well in a small community.  The inconsiderate neighbour you avoid.

  14. Thanks very much for the offer.  80mm is way too long for my rims, need around half that.

     

    Edit:  Do you like the muc-off valves, any issues with them besides the corrosion that DieselnDust pointed out?

     

    I love them.  Can't remember the exact number, but they are significantly lighter than the standard OEM valves in my wheelset, they look bling and the valve remover tool built into the valve cap has made me a hero on the road twice now.  I doubled down and ordered for our mountain bikes as well, in colours matching our frame detailing.

     

    Edit:  I guess I should address how they perform as tubeless valves too.... They seal really well and come with 3 different rubber fittings for different hole sizes or rim shapes.  Did I mention that they look pretty?

  15. I am toying with the idea of getting some carbon road wheels. I have a Canondale super six with rim brakes and it has some basic aluminum rims at the moment.

     

    It seems like an aero set is best but I am a little confused in what depth to get - I understand the cons of deep wheels in strong winds but not sure how strong our winds are in joburg.

     

    I mostly ride in a group over weekends.

    50mm best all-round, plenty aero but quite a few lightweight options still. If you are ordering and can get a custom set, 50mm front and 60mm rear is my fav.

     

    I've lived in Joburg and the Kaap, strong winds are basically non-existant in Jhb. In Jhb I would not hesitate to go full aero if that's what I wanted to do - as in 64mm front and 80mm rear. That's IF you wanted to go full aero, this setup would be quite heavy and maybe not as aesthetically pleasing depending on how extreme your taste is. It would kill on a flat course, though.

    well-done to the trail-builders !!

     

    Trails beautiful at the moment - so many colours - from white and yellow to rich dark green and purple

     

    I struggled up the new climb!  Will have to give it another go.

     

    Agreed, these are the most beautiful conditions.  Everything in full bloom, plus some late season rain to keep the dust in check.  Just remember to spray yourself with lots of insect repellent before your ride  :D
