  1. Nobody - I think the post you responded was not aimed at us taking responsibility for all other cyclists. He was actually saying that more people should ride like you do, doing the responsible thing and take responsibility for their own actions. That somebody cannot go around like the idiot he's describing and then cry "motorists are maniacs" if a car comes over a green robot and spot him riding over the red robot, crossing lanes, helmet off, too late. That's the way I read it, anyways. Also heard nothing about the accident yet, hope all is well.
Silwer IrDA...
  5. +1 on SportTracks! They also have an add-in to convert files to Polar .hrm format. Haven't played around much with it, but if you can save/import it there, you can still have the Polar's Protrainer interface.
  6. Won't work for my issue - the little tab at the top broke... But that was after many many k's - also used it on my 205.
  7. Is it early in your training or have you switched to road recently? When I went from road to mtb after more than a year of just road I had the same. Asked the same question to another forum. The reply I got was short and sweet: HTFU and ride more! Which is what I did and no more quad probs. (Well, very little - still get it at times.) I got it esp when I was out of the saddle more often - also was told this may be due to an incorrect technique of riding out the saddle. And lastly - as others have said - odds are that your road bike and the gym bike is not set up the same and you work different muscle groups.
  8. Agreed with other - give the 500a check. Also, if you do go for the 705, for the love of all things good, DO NOT upgrade to firmware 3.10 - stop at 2.90! It stuff up elevation pretty badly... Unless they have a newer version (here's to hoping!) by the time you get yours. It's a great gadget!
  9. Gels did not... gel with me. Then I tried Hammer gels. No probs since. But that's what works for me. Usage - only longer rides (90+). Then I take bars along as well, have a bar in first hour to 1:30, then a quick bit of gel - most likely two shots later.
  10. Could declare some of the probs I've been getting of late. Will give the one water bottle, one drink bottle a try. Yeah, I also only use one water bottle for anything under about 90 mins. This question was for longer training rides and funrides. And agreed on the flasks for gels - works very well! Dunno how cool it is for the racers, for me it works like a charm.
  11. Quick question. Always rode with 2 bottles filled with carb drinks (of whatever make) and that was that. I've now been told to rather use one carb drink and one water bottle. Unfortunately I wa snot in a position to ask many questions regarding that. What's the logic behind that and if it is the better way to go - how to utilise it? Do you split it 50-50, do you drink water first (e.g.) hour, then add more carb drink sips inbetween - esp since you're eating more during the initial phases? SeaBee2010-02-01 08:03:26
  12. Used to be way out. I ride with both... and the Edge was laughably off. Since the 2.9 upgrade mine was better. On 3.1 now and still very close to Polar readings. The fact that they found a way to... how shall I say it... without ... stuff up of all things their elevation on 3.1 is beyond nme (but also OT!) Haven't compared to SportsTracks, though, will see when I get home. If I remember...
  13. Think Holy stumbled onto a goof one there - Country Rhodes!
  14. Or maybe not. I had agony on 2 saddles before gettin my latest one - and the moment I went on my first ride it was just perfect. No pain, no problems, just great! Hope you have the same luck. (well, better, since that was my 3rd saddle...)
  15. I have the 2010 alu Merida 3000. It is schaweeeeet! But then... I came from a 6-year-old FUJI hard-tail with v-brakes... so comparisons are quite hard. Absolutely love it - fit me perfectly and is specced way above my current mtb abilities, but the plan is obviously to "grow into" it. (Yeah, the dark side has engulfed me - or have I embrased it?) The bike just feels supremely natural to me and I just feel more confident in what I'm doing. Yes, that includes still bliksimming down every ride on my new challenge - singletrack. Only way to learn, I suppose... I can catch drifts, front wheel slides, everything just happens - it's really the most "natural"-feeling bike I've ever ridden. But that's for me... you may end up not liking the thing at all. Go ride them, best advise I can give.
  16. Just remember - despite everybody wanting to help - what works perfectly for one a$$ does not mean it will work for yours. Good luck on finding the right saddle! (FWIW - I've gone through several last year trying to get to the right one on my roadbike, where I sit for longer periods than on my mtb. My butt's nirvana was a Selle Italia SLR XP Gel flow - which can also be used on mtb). My mtb came with a Prologo Scratch and it feel just fine.
  17. Agreed, that is why I replied "on behalf" so easily - that is what Dr Swart told me to use.
  18. Brakes... brakes... brakes....BREAKS is something you don't want on a bike, esp mtb!
  19. You'll have to change your username after that, though... Anyways, got one - it's got the Magura fork. That's on my alu frame version (HFS 3000 D). The carbon version (Carbon 3000 D) has a Fox fork. (You also add 15K top the price for that version...) Your guestimate is about spot-on. Here's a link to the bike specs, FWIW: http://www2.merida-bikes.com/en_ZA/Bikes.Detail.17 If you want to look at the carbon one, look around under bikes --> "Ninety Six" on the menu - easy to find.
  20. Thanks Ben, appreciate the feedback! I don't have the tools, just curious and will have a look at what I see... SwissVan, if I may answer Q1 - they will most likely use the second one, Karvonen, utilising HR Reserve.
  21. Ben, just for interest sake - what can one pick up by sleeping with HR monitor and what should I look for when looking at values of such an "exercise"?
  22. Small black pieces that saves my butt - and a couple of other places - just a while ago when a brain donor'ed driver turned in riiiight in front of me from the opposite lane. SRAm brakes and Swisstop pads combined... A week earlier I still had Tektro brakes and old pads on - I would've been t-boning a car. Trust me - you don't use your brakes all that often - when you need them, it's worth the extra 30 bucks.
  23. Me... Having a quick coffee before hitting the dirt. And it's already hot, sun's not even out yet.
  24. Smile and wave, boys... just smiiile and wave! (Somebody had to put that in - may as well be me!)
