  5. Looking for a rider to complete a team due to recently injured partner. Intermediate level rider from Spain, with good MTB experience and completed stage races. This opportunity includes caravan sleeping package
  6. Not since Yolande Speedy, in 2013, has a South African woman stood upon the top step of the Absa Cape Epic podium. In recent years, Robyn de Groot, Mariske Strauss and Candice Lill have had shots at the title, though all three came up short. Local fans will, therefore, be thrilled to read that two of the three will combine as a local super team in 2020. Riding as Faces CST, Strauss and Lill are the first all-South African team with a realistic chance of victory in nearly a decade. Click here to view the article
  7. In 2016 they finished fourth. In 2017 they finished fifth. In 2018 they stepped onto the podium, finishing third. In 2019 they went one better, earning the silver medal. The question for the 2020 Absa Cape Epic is if Cannondale Factory Racing can add the names "Manuel Fumic and Henrique Avancini" to the race's list of overall winners. Click here to view the article
  8. The 2020 Epic route has been announced and I thought I'd update the comparison I did last year. It looks like more of the same as last year... shorter route with high climbing rate / intensity. Coupled with the location (hot, rocky and dry), it will be another tough one. As before, RED is tough, BLUE / GREEN is less tough, but not by any scientific means. As there is limited data of what to include, I simply look at distance, ascent and and ascent rate in m/km terms. For me, distance, coupled with climb intensity is a pretty good measure of overall effort (difficulty), but this is not the case for everyone. (Click on the images to enlarge)
  9. I am looking for a partner for 2020. 1. I have an entry. 2. You’ll need to cover your share of the entry price. 3. Ideally have ridden EPIC before (next year will be my 5th...) 4. Be in the 40+ age category. 5. Ideally be based in Cape Town. All of these conditions are not mandatory (except sharing the cost ????) - just looking for the right partner for this exciting challenge in 2020. Please PM me if interested and we can take it from there... Cheers!

  14. The 2019 Absa Cape Epic route has been announced (old news now), which lit up my riding group's whatsapp discussions. This was then followed by some unusual noises and sighs from my Epic destined friends. I thought I'd try to compare the routes since the event's inception in 2004 to see whether their moans were warranted. Based on the limited route information available, I could compare entire events and their stages in terms of event and stage distance (km), total event and stage ascents (m) and average ascent (m/km) for the event and individual stages. 2019 is going to be a cracker (hopefuly not frames or riders)... but seriously tough. It's the shortest Epic at 624km (longest was in 2008 at 966km). But... it's the most intense in terms of climbing per distance covered at almost 27m per km of riding (on average), with stage 6 dishing out 30m per km. Every stage in 2019 will be brutal in terms of climbing demand. Have a look at the graphic below and you'll immediately notice that 2019 seems a lot redder / orangier than any other year in the ascent rate category. For reference: RED = PAIN BLUE = LESS PAIN. 2019 only has reddish / orangeish (lots of pain and significant pain) stages in terms of climbing rate, where all previous Epics had some blue to dilute the discomfort somewhat (relatively speaking). What's interesting is that the Epics are becoming shorter and more intense over the years, especially since 2016. For all of you 2019 Epic riders, feel free to print, cut out the blokkies and paste these into your training palns / diaries where you need to be doing hill repeats. I doubt whether this will have any impact whatsoever on the outcome of your efforts, but at least you can keep reminding yourself that there will be pain, and lots of it next year. 15. Hi all, I ам looking for a partner for Absa Cape Epic 2019 - I have a Early bird entry but unfurtunately the friends I have been racing with before in other races are not able to participate in this Race. It is more important that your are a good partner than a fast rider - we are not here to win but definately we will race our best. I am 28 year old and from Denmark former swimmer with a good physical condition that are about to be adapted to a MTB. I have participated in other MTB races in south africa but I don't have decades of experience riding a MTB but a fast learner. The goal is to reach the startline and complete the race to gain more experience for the following years of Cape Epic races. Best Philip

  20. I've seen a couple tweets to the effect that the new Cape Epic owners are to rescind the rule around not allowing riders with drug infringements from entering the event. Is this true? Does anyone have anymore clarity on the the exact changes?

  22. Just had a quick look at some posts about the Cape Epic purchasing Wine2Whales and started thinking about the costs of stage racing... Here is a quick link to a Google spreadsheet if you're interested in adding to the list. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_wf5OJzbYdcxKS_nkgJhvfUm87flBt_SWsBtOPSVaBU/edit?usp=sharing This is not a post about whether it is cheap or expensive or the Rand vs Dollar debate - more about an actual comparison of what these races actually cost. (Entry fee, excluding any of your incidental extras like travel, mechanic packages, massage etc.) Here is a quick summary of what I have so far... Rand for Rand the Joberg2C still provides great value for a longer event in terms of costs per kilometre at a low R64,51 for 2018 (With free coffee and magnificent food) and the Cape Epic topping out on R113.83/km (with plastic cups for water). *Disclaimer: Rates are as accurate as my 2 minute Google Search provided. Accommodation and food is based on my own experience and rating (No, I don't 'bant' and I like steak, pasta and beer - probably too much!) PS> I would love to compare some of these with the costs of doing an international race like the Trans Portugal or Trans Alp!
  23. Challenge yourself with USN and win one of two team entries to the 2017 Absa Cape Epic, plus a chance of winning USN online shopping vouchers worth R1500 each. Click here to view the article
