  8. The final stage of the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek presented by Biogen was a loop through the Chandelier Game Reserve outside Oudtshoorn. For the last time, we rustled around in our tents, wriggling into lycra, looking for clean socks, and applying suncream before dragging ourselves and our bikes to the start line.   10. The Spur/Red-E and Spur/Valencia teams of Alan Hatherly, Matt Beers, Ariane Luthi and Amy-Beth McDougall secured the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, titles on Saturday the 21st of October in the Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn. Though both the men’s and women’s general classification champions were unable to win the final stage, surrendering stage victory to NAD Pro MTB and Ascendis Health, they still secured the overall victory by 1 minute 42 seconds and 1 minute 40 seconds respectively. The Queen Stage of the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, saw the Team Spur/Red-E combination to Alan Hatherly and Matt Beers distance NAD Pro MTB in the final meters to claim a potentially decisive stage win. The sixth stage of the race, on Friday the 20th of October, featured a mammoth 2 700 metres of climbing and was won by the Team Ascendis Health duo of Robyn de Groot and Sabine Spitz in the UCI women’s competition.   15. Despite both the men’s and the women’s races featuring an early break – during stage 5 of the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, on Thursday the 19th of October – the stage was decided by mere seconds. Team Spur/Red-E secured their second victory in a sprint finish, by out-muscling KMC Fruit to Go and NAD Pro MTB, while Team Ascendis Health edged out Team Spur/Valencia by eight seconds at the end of the 97 kilometre long stage.   17. The sun came out for the first time during the 2017 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, and under blue skies the Team Ascendis Health women raced to stage victory on the singletracks of George. Stage four, a mid-race time trial, was won by The Spur/Red-E combination in the UCI men’s category to extend their general classification lead; on Wednesday the 18th of October.   19. The Team Spur/Red-E combination of Alan Hatherly and Matt Beers sprinted to victory on stage three of the Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, presented by Biogen, on Tuesday, the 17th of October. Their female compatriots were not able to match their winning streak, however, as Team Ascendis Health raced to their first stage win of the race crossing the finish line, in George, first in the elite women’s competition. The start of stage two of the Cape Pioneer Trek heads directly into a searing, steep tar climb, from the Milkwood Primary School alongside the sea in Mossel Bay, to the top of the ridge overlooking the bay.   24. The first stage of Cape Pioneer Trek was preceded by ominously heavy rainfall. Just ten minutes before the start it was bucketing down, and showing no signs of clearing.
