  8. Dear Bikehubbers, This is a very last-minute announcement to all cyclists (especially commuters) in the Fish Hoek area and surrounds. You are invited to a focus group to be held at Fish Hoek Library on Tuesday 23 August from 6-7.30pm (refreshments will be served, a modest stipend is payable). This focus group forms part of the Fish Hoek phase of my masters dissertation on how cyclists interact with the built environment (i.e., both buildings and roads) in this part of Cape Town. The other phases will take place in Ocean View and Masiphumelele. This is a great opportunity to meet in a small group (7 persons, maximum) with other cyclists, and talk about cycling experiences, both good and bad, around a large 2x1m map, where we will mark the places in the Far South that matter to you. The aim of the research is to produce a set of recommendations to be taken into account in future infrastructure planning in Cape Town. It is hoped that, by incorporating the views of the cycling community in a structured way that 'speaks an engineering language', it will be possible to improve the practical utility of new cycling interventions in our city. Our first session, held this week, was very successful, and I am reaching out to the BikeHub community based on a recommendation from a participant. For any enquiries or more information, please contact me as indicated on the invitation or see details online at the link in the attachment. Best regards to all - Brett A5 Invitation Fish Hoek.pdf
  9. Heard that a rider has died after a hit and run on Viking Road today. Randall Februarie. He rode for Crown Cycles. RIP, leaves behind a wife and three kids. Sad day indeed.
  10. The months of February and March generally see a congested road racing calendar across the country. Many of you are busy training for these events, especially in preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With the increase in cyclists on the roads comes an increased risk of cyclists also being hit by a vehicle. Click here to view the article

  15. 2nd August 2015 14:00 at Monument Park Shopping Centre Guys the first step in taking back Klapperkop is taking place on Sunday organised by THe Monument Park Community Policing Forum. For those of you not yet on the WhatsApp group Sunday's operation is to start at The Monument Park Shopping centre and not Orion Street due to numbers. Still at 14:00 and my suggestion is that if you are a MTBiker is to bring your bike as it will give us more mobility in the park when we proceed through it. I appeal to all of you to recognise that this is an important first step to not only show a presence in Klapperkop but to also send a message to the authorities that we want to see some action. Remember politicians are driven by numbers so we need as many of you to attend as possible. WhatsApp Trish on 0721362911 to join the Fort Klapperkop Safety group so that you can be informed as to what's happening in our area
  16. I was just asked by my brother to confirm a supposed incident where two guys were attacked at or around Meerendal, apparently one of the guys ended up with stab wounds to the abdomen. This apparently happened a week or so ago. I asked my brother if he was sure about this, and he says he heard it from one of his customers who knows one of the guys involved. The customer also rides by the way. My boet insists that the customer is a man of high repute, who would not joke about stuff like this. I have not heard anything related to this, and am purely asking any hubbers to dismiss or confirm. If this is in fact true, it is serious, as I and many other folks ride alone there all the time.

  21. Depending on where and when you ride and your vulnerability, you may be exposed to some risk of assault or robbery while cycling. The risk is often low but the impact on many people of an assault, robbery or other attack is massive. It can significantly reduce how much you use your bike and the stress-free enjoyment of riding when you do. Consequently, it is worth trying to minimise the risk of assault before it ever happens to you. Click here to view the article
  22. Winter is the time of year when cycling becomes slightly more challenging as daylight hours diminish and the weather changes. When winter arrives, you might think that the bicycling season is over. But with a little knowledge and practice, winter riding can be highly rewarding, and commuting to work can be a significant timesaver as more people generally use their cars in winter and get stuck in peak hour traffic. 23. Parents can teach their children to be safe cyclists by going out with them and leading by example. South African roads are public spaces and cyclists have the right to ride their bicycles on them, but riding a bicycle on public roads is a huge responsibility and it is vital that children are made aware of the rules of the road (visit our website www.pedalpower.org.za), as well as how to handle a bicycle in a safe and responsible way.
