  1. Good day all I'm heading to the Cape next weekend. Going to be staying a stone's throw from Gordon's Bay. Is it safe to ride between Gordon's Bay and Hermanus on the R44 and R43? Looks like it will make for awesome riding... Otherwise, suggested road routes in the area? Thanks!!
  2. I was hoping someone could suggest me a good pair of padded shorts for longer rides that doesn't break in the bank, it's very important for me ?
  3. Hi there We're looking for a training group to join in Somerset (will be moving there and will be there from Nov 1 2015) for road as well as MTB. Does anybody know of any? Please whatsapp on 0845001414 if you know of any. Thanks
  4. On Thursday morning, early, we start our tour to Durban which includes riding the Amashova (day 4). Our club has done many Durban tours in the past, but we haven't done one for the last few years. This thread will be a blog about our journey from Germiston to Durban, with photos and comments from as many of the tour group as possible - some of them are hubbers (but they like to keep a low profile) - pending internet connection at our overnight spots (and my willingness to sift through photos and type up a story). One of the reasons for the tour is to raise funds for the NSPCA (our chosen charity for the 947 Cycle Challenge this year). We have setup a Back-a-buddy campaign as well as an SMS number (947-67 to 38018, @ R25/sms) for any donations. Like most others, raising funds is hard as everyone has their own preferences of where to donate (if at all). If you have already donated, we say "thanks". If not - chose from one of the two methods above and help us help the animals. The route Comprising a group of 27 (24 riders and 3 providing permanent backup), we have a mix of abilities ranging from Vets to beginners, old and young, experience and inexperienced. Very few members have cycled more than 200Km in one go, so day 1 will be a big challenge (224km) for many members. Personally, the longest ride I've done is 191Km so nailing the DC will be something I've been looking forward to ever since we started planning this tour. So far, the forecast for Thursday is looking promising... a tail wind (forecast is at Standerton - at the dam), which is 170Km into our ride. Let's see what the post-ride feedback it like. The biggest concern, I would think is this heatwave we're currently experiencing, so I'm guessing a lot of fluids will be consumed by all. Day 2 appears to be a good recovery ride, if you can call 157Km a recovery, while day 3 will be a favourite among most as we make our way through the KZN midlands before we reach PMB on Saturay afternoon. Day 4 is on the Amashova, starting in TL (for 3 of our tandems) and BB (buddy batch) for the rest. We'll be riding in club kit on Sunday, so look out for the "minions" on the road on Sunday... Three sleeps and counting...
  5. Team BiBi Rouge is a cycling team started by a local fashion line called BiBi Rouge by Sabrina Kennedy, as an initiative to help raise funds for different charities through cycling. As you might know, the 94.7 Cycle Challenge is coming up shortly, and Team BiBi Rouge will use this opportunity to raise money to help stop dog fighting in townships. To do this, some of the lovely men in our team have volunteered to be sponsored to ride the whole 100km race in pink Tutu's! To sponsor one or more of the men, you can click the link below and choose your amount from R10 to R1000. These guys need motivation to look fabulous for the biggest cycle race in Joburg, so we appreciate any donation! Dog fighting claims the lives of hundreds of innocent dogs every day, both bread for fighting, but also stolen from homes as live bait. We feel this is a huge problem in South Africa that urgently needs to be attended to in order to stop innocent animals being mauled and killed for entertainment. There is a serious lack of funds for this as court cases need to be held against the dog fighting rings as well as cars, staff and food used to help confiscate the dogs. We really do appreciate any donation big or small, so please share this so that your friends and family can help too! You can click on this link to donate or you can buy a cycling key ring that will donate R20 to the fund http://www.sabrinakennedy.co.za/shop.php#!/BiBi-Rouge-Charity/c/5924020/offset=0&sort=priceDesc THANKS

  11. I bought his Total Heart Rate Training book. I have sold my road bicycle and decided to do just MTB. I have some confusion regarding my HR zones and not convinced I am seeing the correct zone values. Here are my questions: Does the surface matter for the 30 minutes field test? Does it have to be offroad if I do MTB? Or can it be tar?The gravel road that I did my field test on has some steep hills with nice downhills after it. It starts off with a nice flat surface with some small inclines. Towards the 2nd half of the route the hills start. Will these hills influence my average heart rate? What I mean is will it bring down my average heart rate if the downhills are long? I don’t pedal much on these downhills, so my average heart rate will be reduced? My average heart rate for the last 20 minutes of the test is 173 bpm (which should be my lactate threshold) and my max is 181 bpm. Is this low for my average? Some guys get a max HR of over 200!Does anyone use his way of determining your HR zones and actually training by it? What I find with MTB is that my heart rate is relatively high. If i have to pedal any slower to bring it down I am going to fall over
  12. Hey Guys I want some opinions please, I am a cyclist only no other sport, and I am looking to buy either a Suunto ambit 3 peak or a Garmin 810 which ones is best bearing in mind I only cycle. Thanks in advance,
  13. Hi Guys, Not entirely sure if I am in the right group here, but I was wondering if there are any recreational mtb cyclists in the Nigel area who would be willing to include a novice cyclists in there group. I don't know what info to give, but I average about 17 to 18km/h on a 10km route. I try and cycle for 30 minutes three times a week in the morning dependant on work requirments. And I try and get in a 25 - 30km run in on a Saturday. I am just looking for someone who enjoys the sport but not trying to train for the cape epic or something. So if there are any peeps out there let me know. Thank You,
  14. To promote safer cycling for all those who use bicycles, the Safe Cycling Initiative from PPA has specifically targeted motorists through our new campaign. We have recruited high profile celebrities from a non cycling background to personalise and convey our message to all road users to stay wider of the rider. All we are asking for is to give us space and share the road with us. We have print adverts, radio spots, bumper stickers, awareness rides and the new lumo high visibility cycling shirt. Attached are some of personalities we are using. And the bumper sticker.

  16. Dah mtb doctor! The service shop Hi and welcome to Dahmtbdoctor. I would firstly like to introduce myself as my name is Donovan Shaw and I am a professional bicycle mechanic, I have over 8 years of experience in the mechanical section of mountainbiking. I have a partner by the name of Dean Hugo, who has been in the industry for over 5 years; some of you might know him from northcliff cycles. We have come together and we now have the very first pickup and delivery workshop service out there, what we offer is very unique to the cycling industry, and we take great pride at what we do. You’re probably tired of rushing to cycle shops early in the morning, lunch times or even after work, where you just make it in time to book your bike in somewhere, well with us it’s a different story. We actually drive to your house at any time of the day to pick your bike up, we then give you a 24 hour to 48 hour guarantee bike back. It’s a common fact that due to the sport being so active and big, that you sometimes wait days for your bike Our prices are very competitive, with us you not only saving money but also saving time! After a long hard ride and you are battling with our bike, giving you issues then all you do is give us a call or an sms and we will come pick your bike up. To top it off we even do callouts, which means if you came from a ride and you wish to have your gears set, or tubeless giving problems, even if you want us to fit new parts for you. How does this work? Our workshop is based in nortriding, randburg, we have a 20 kilometre radius from which we charge a standard rate, and if you fall out of that radius we then charge an extra fee per 320 kilometres. When you feel our bike needs a basic or a full service, all you need to do is give us a ring and we will confirm a pickup time with you, within a 48 hour period you will have your bike back at your house, worked on, properly cleaned and tested, ready for another ride. Below I will give you our full price list on our services, please be patient as our parts list will be available soon, this is just to give you an idea of how we work.: Service list Basic service: R350 -wash and lube -bottom bracket service -headset service -gears set front and rear -complete rundown on wear and tear on your parts -setting of brakes Full service: R450 -bike gets stripped completely to the frame -wash and lube -gears set front and rear -headset service -front and rear hub service -bottom bracket service -both wheels get trued (balanced) -brake bleeding if needed (excluding) The following is not included in our services and will be charged separately: Brake bleeding- R 125 per side (R250 for both) Shock service- R600 Gear cables and outer housings- R200 (for front and rear) Tubeless sealant – R100 per wheel The following are additional services on its own: Wheel true- R100 per wheel Gears set- R100 Headset services- R100 Bottom bracket service- R100 Setting of brakes (v brakes) - R70 Hub service- R100 per hub Wash/lube- R50 Shock service (rear) - R500 Fork service (front) - R600 Tubeless conversion (tubeless tape, sealant, valves) - R450 excluding tyres Tubeless package (including tyres) - R1550 (maxis crossmark tubeless tyres) There will be an additional charge of R150 with pickup and delivery option if you fall under the radius of 20 kilometres, if you decide to drop your bike of there will be only a half price charge on the callout, however…if you live within a 7 kilometre radius from bland fort road, northriding then we charge only R100 for pickup and delivery These are services we can perform at your home within an hour only: -setting of gears R100 -headset service R120 -tubeless N/A (new tape, top up sealant, fit new tyres) -Wheel true R120 per wheel -hub service R120 per wheel Callout fee will be charged at @R100 for these services! How to get started? It’s very simple, all you need to do is give us a call or email us and let us know what you would like us to do, we will then confirm a time with you that suit you for us to come and collect your bike. On our arrival you will receive a quotation on what will be done on your bike, if there are parts that need to be replaced you might not get your bike back the following day but as soon as our supplier has delivered our stock. Insurance purposes Please know that although your bike is with us and not at a cycle shop, we indeed have insurance from where your bike gets worked on. We live in a secure complex with 24 hour guards; your bike will be 100% safe with us!! Payment method We are very easy going when it comes to payments, as much as you trust us with your bike we expect no payment hassles from you, we prefer EFT or cash on drop of. Feel free to contact me via whatsapp or cell: 0721561718 Hope to hear from you soon Thanks don/dean
  17. 1. Have partners: When there is someone with you, you will get more motivation. 2. Focus on a landmark: Then set the short term goal of riding ti that point. 3. Fantasize that you’re racing Le Tour: That’s Froome up the road. Go and get him! 4. Remind yourself why you’re training: Remember that no pain no gain. 5. Take a break: It’s okay to call a timeout then you can have more energy to continue. 6. Focus on breathing: Use mind over matter to slow down your breathing. 7. Pedal smoothly: Focus on spinning circles, not grinding squares. 8. Sing: Distract yourself from the pain by hurting your ears. 9. Adjust your program: Overtraining or always doing the same thing can make you out of patience. So it’s better to adjust your program when necessary. 10. Set goals: Set goals according your situation, it can make you stay motivated. Check on http://www.carbonbikemanufacture.com/ to discover more.
  18. Hi hubbers Are there any riders here that ride to any of the University of Johannesburg campuses (Soweto, Kigsway, Bunting Road, Doornfontein)? The City of Joburg needs active commuters to tell us where cyclists tie up their bikes, where they ride, etc. so that they may guide the infrastructure accordingly. If there are any please get in touch with me, or if you know anyone, please ask them to get in touch with me. Wits University developed CycleWits which consists of students and lecturers who cycle to university, we want to form something similar at UJ.

  20. Hi Guys, Wondering if anyone can help. I am coming over to Cape Town from London, UK and desperate to get out cycling when I am down. I am going to hire a road bike, but was wondering if anyone was around to take me on a ride one day? I'm a keen cyclist, normally enjoy doing a 2 to 3 hour ride approx. 17mph. Would love to cycle out in Cape Town but obviously would be stupid to out alone as I have no clue where to ride. I'll be staying in Kloof street until 1st Jan and then staying in Camps Bay till I leave. Thanks very much. Dan
  21. Been thinking about having a set up at Honingklip mountain bike trails; Cyclists can either complete the indemnity forms on-line and e-mail them to me, along with proof of payment - and we will have the permit ready for them OR TRUSTING the cyclists to complete the form on arrival and put the money into a 'box' Will this be accepted and will it be abused??? The reason is, I dont want to have someone there all day and everyday for cyclists, I would prefer to trust people - we do this for our 4x4 trail and except for maybe one or two - people are generally honest.

  23. I often see mountain bikers in and around the Beaulieu Area and know how much cyclists love coffee stops and a good breakfast. Cafe Bonsai (Located in Sawasdee- The Bonsai and Orchid Nursery)serves amazing coffee!! and they serve very cheep breakfasts so you can even afford it with the cash you take along for the ride . Just thought I would share this great find with all of you :)its a good place to meet up and get your daily dose of caffeine.
