  1. After 30 years of riding the pipetrack above Hout Bay, it has been closed! The pipetrack is a peculiar piece of thoroughfare, traversing multiple landowners, including private and SanParks land. It route has been so important for anyone wanting to stay off the Main Road, when riding into or out of Hout Bay. ERF 1783 is private land and the owner has decided to start developing. He is doing this by putting up a big black fence both sides of the pipetrack on his property. Effectively making a dead-end, if you are coming up from Hout Bay. I believe he is well within his rights to do so. Would it not be awesome to for this developer see the value that cyclist and cycling bring to Hout Bay and greater Cape Town. Would it not be clever and a great bit of PR for this developer to integrate a bicycle thoroughfare through his property? Who knows given the profile of the cyclist, he might sell a house to one. Let us see how this unfold!
  2. We have worked really hard to raise funding and in turn to build a mountain bike trail in Hout Bay. The trail is just over the hill from Constantia Nek and is ideally placed for riders doing the green belts to get some technical riding in. We want people to try the trail out. If you like what you see and would like to see the trail develop, then you can buy a permit valid for 1 year from purchase at R60. The pin point is the entry to the trail. Please visit the Vlakkenberg MTB Trail for more information about access and permits. "Bicyclegear.co.za is proud to announce the establishment of the Vlakkenberg MTB Trail. The trail has been built on private land above the Constantia Nek Estate in Hout Bay. It features a 900m cross country loop that will eventually become a 2.5km course, that will run all the way down Constantia Nek. Please be aware that the trail is being developed all the time. We are open to feedback that we might add, change or correct to the trail. The Vlakkenberg mountain bike trail is named after the mountain on which it is built. Positioned on a beautiful piece of land, the trail has amazing views into Orangekloof. The lay of the land means the trail is technical and challenging through all its A-lines. For the less experienced we have created a B-lines, which means the trail can be enjoyed by all. The area is safe and far from the traffic which means families can park at Constantia Nek and ride to the trail, off-road. Powered by Private Client Holdings, Pedal Power Association and Bicyclegear.co.za, the vision of the trail is to increase riding skills through a maintained and safe cross country mountain bike trail. It is open and accessible to all riders, the only requirement is that you register and pay R60 to use the trail and ride with a trail number plate when using it. The permit is valid for one year from the date of purchase."
  3. Any cycling business out there wanting to share some outside advertising? We are offering interested parties a chance to share an outdoor advertising space on the " Cycling Super Highway" as it runs through Hout Bay. We are looking for other cycling companies to come onboard for at least three months. You will have to supply a high-res artwork at the size of 1500mmX1000mm. The other half will be used by Bicyclegear.co.za. Get in touch if you are interested. Jonathan news@790tv.co.za
  4. The Hout Bay Cycling club urgently needs help. The club was formed to provide a healthy outlet for boys from the Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg communities. The club has been running for 5 years and in this time more than 60 teenage boys have enjoyed the benefits of cycling and being part of a well organised cycling club. But we need more volunteers to keep the club going. What kind of help is needed? - Riding with the boys, teaching cycling skills, and general supervision (1 to 3 rides a week) - Various administrative tasks (secretarial and accounting). - Mentoring and help with school studies. - Able to help with minor bicycle repairs ( major repairs are taken to bike shops) - Transportation of riders and bikes to and from fun rides (5 to 6 events per year) Without more helpers the club may be forced to close its doors. So if you live in Hout Bay and would like to get involved and can spare a few hours either during the week or at weekends please contact Iain McIntosh 082 658 2148 or Janet Moss 021 790 0807 or Mike Calvin 079 036 9319
  5. It was a mad week leading up to The Night Harvest for the crew. With the extensive fires blazing through Cape Town and the builders helping friends and family evacuate their houses in Hout Bay, there weren't that many hands free to prepare the jumps. Despite these interruptions, the trail builders pulled it off in style. Click here to view the article
  6. It’s almost that time of the year again, the largest and most unique BMX and MTB dirt comp in the whole of Africa, The Night Harvest, brought to you by Monster Energy in association with Sony Mobile ZA, The Pole Yard, FOX, CFC Scaffolding, Imperial Ford, DMR Bikes and WG Dixon - Pty Ltd, is going down on tonight, and we want you to be there. 7. http://bicyclegear.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Neverland.jpg This is an amazing trail in Hout Bay. This is just another piece of the puzzle that could get a mountain bike trail built all the way round Table Mountain.
  8. I am not talking about keeping mountain bikers safe from gun-pointing, knife wielding tik addicts. I am talking about how rutted the trail has become on Karbonkelberg. A few months ago you could ride the majority of the trail up and then certainly downhill all the way. Today I went up and there are sections totally washed away, leaving gaping holes. I would love to start a "kickstarter" project to employ guys under SANParks to build a proper trail there. "Hike and Bike" up from Rocket Road with a downhill into the Hout Bay Harbour precinct. Here is a video clip I made of the ride a few months back, when it was more rideable...
