  1. I have the dubious honour of living across the road from my LBS in Bloem. Jean & his team are never to busy for a friendly chat or to dispense sensible advice; and because they don't use bullying sales tactics but offer quiet, quality service, the place is always full of happy customers (and staff). Last month I bought a secondhand Raleigh RC2000 there - Sora brakes, Tiagra crank & derailleurs - with not a scratch (even my girlfriend, who hasn't the slightest interest in cycling, described it as 'very pretty'). Its strange getting on road bike for the first time since 1987 (anyone remember the Invader 10 speed?) and it still feels a little weird! Like a new puppy, it shares the garage with the big dog, my Momsen 329, which is my regular commuter and weekend toy. If you find yourself in Bloem (what you have done to deserve that I don't want to know), do give Cycle World a visit. It s small shop, of course, but there are good people working there. Btw the high price of petrol has had one pleasant side effect in Bloem - a marked increase in the number of cycle commuters.
  2. Hi all, I'm due for an upgrade and am stuck between 2 bikes. What would you sugges: Momsen AL429 or Scott Spark 960 with AirShock upgrade. Any advice would be highly appreciated.
  3. Momsen Design's first full carbon fibre mudguard has been tested and developed over the last year in their hometown of Port Elizabeth and once the final version has been signed off will be manufactured there too. Click here to view the article
  4. Momsen AL829 comes out standard with a Sram XO Carbon 39/26 crank and chainring combination (2x10). The big chainring however is starting to show excessive wear and tear. It is now at such a level that the moment extra power is applied (as in hill climbs or sprinting) the chain will climb off onto granny (big spin but going nowhere). To the experts, please recommend a suitable replacement chainring that is a bit more hardy. I am even considering maybe going bigger (42-44).....maybe someting like a red anodized Race Face narrow-wide. Help asb die ou ballie........
  5. Lets say there was no price difference between these two bikes. Which is better?
  6. Hi again fellow bikers. I posted a topic last week where I listed 4 bikes that seems to be good value bikes for my budget. (Ghost, GT, Merida and Titan) The list was shortened whereby I now am between two bikes... Again, like my previous topic, as a newbie, I am not clued up on components etc.. The two bikes that stands out for me, based on feedback from other riders are: - Merida TFS 300 Big Nine - Momsen AL 229 I am being told that the shock and components on the Momsen is better, but I also need to know if the frame is decent etc.. Is there someone who own or owned these bikes that can let me know which is better? I am new to the sport and want my first bike to last a while before upgrades. I will be the typical weekend cruiser withy the family.. Thanks for your time and advice..
  7. Seen plenty photos of the 29" bikes but none of the 650B bikes. Anyone bought one? If so please post photos.
  8. So its time for a new bike... Seeing that 27.5" is the new black, that's the way I'm gonna go and I'm looking for 140mm suspension travel. Not 160 as I intend to do some longer rides / races with it Please add to the list of bikes to research and post reviews! Any agents for the lesser known brands will be appreciated. 12. Fitted a set to my hardtail. Tread pattern isn't very aggressive but the tyres roll well - grip is average. I've washed out a few times in tight corners. I see Momsen is fitting them as standard on its 2014 Vipas. Anyone else tried these tyres and, if so, what are your thoughts?
  13. I am seriously considering buying the 2013 Momsen X-AL because of it's really good spec (see below - apologies for the formatting) in relation to price, but I am apprehensive because none of the distributors have stock to test out. Basically I need to commit to a 50% deposit just to see it .... I know that the brakes and rims aren't the greatest, but I should be able to manage - any other boegies in the spec that I should watch out for? I have also read that the rims aren't the easiest to get tyres to seat onto in a tubeless conversion either .... Thanks for your comments!
  14. Hi Guys, I am in the market for a Momsen AL329 or AL429, but I have heard from a well respected LBS, that of late, there have been issues with the frames... has anyone here experienced this? Please let me know, thanks
  15. It's the final day of the UCI MTB World Cup here in Pietermaritzburg and we're scouting the pits for more gear. Most of the elites are still hiding from the sun and heat, but we've caught a few snaps of some XCO machines. Click here to view the article
  16. Hey guys I am struggling to decide which fork to buy. I have a Momsen AL329 frame (tapered). I dont have a huge budget and I have been looking at: RockShox Recon Silver TK Solo Air RockShox XC 32 TK Solo Air Forks Suntour Raidon RST First I Cant find the Rockshox forks at any of the shops near me, they mostly only sell the Reba. I have seen it on CRC for affordable prices. Do you guys have any recommendations on these forks, and also where to get a good deal on them. I would prefer to buy locally, in the JHB area as I would also like to have the steerer cut (if need be) Im not overly keen on buying second hand as most of the forks that I have seen for under R3k look like they have been through the wars.
  17. We caught up with Victor Momsen of Momsen Bikes at the Argus Expo and had a nice chat with him on our couch. There's some interesting movement happening in PE with Momsen, mostly concerning carbon fibre production. Check it out below. Click here to view the article
  18. Hi everyone. Glad I found this site. Looks like the best place to ask this question. I am looking at commuting to and from work every day. That will be from Table View to Paarden Island. Its about a 10km trip each way. There is a bike trail all the way from my house to work so every day on the bus I see people riding their bikes and thought hell I could do that. Put the money I use for transport towards a new bike and get fit at the same time. Now the big question is what will I need in order to accomplish this without any hassle. I will probably need the gear and all that and then of course the right bike. I am looking at spending all in max R10 000 with gear included. I have been reading up on the pros and cons of buying a 29er and 27.5 and the 26ers. Dont really know what will be the right one but lets meet the middle ground and get a 27.5er for now. With that said the 2 bikes I have narrowed it down to within my budget range is the Momsen 650B AL651 and the Silverback Slade 3. They are more or less in the same price range and will probably do the commute with no problems. On a side note has anyone dealt with Cycle Teknix in Table View. All input and advice will be greatly appreciated.
  19. Hi there fellow hubbers, I currently own a "pimped" 2012 Momsen AL229 - it has gone through a multitude of upgrades and the only thing that is still stock standard is the frame. There is a possability that I may be able to pick up a pretty clean 2012 GT Karakoram 3.0 frame for a pretty good price (less than R500). The GT brand is one that I have always admired - and wanted but my only option at the time was the Momsen. My question, which frame would you guys say is "the better one" - or are they pretty much on the same level? My intention is to simply book my Momsen into hospital (my garage) whereby all her components will be donated across to the GT frame - but I dont want to go through the schlep if there will be little to no difference? Look forward to hearing from the experts...........
  20. I walked into Finish Line Cycles in Edenvale recently, best bike shop in Johannesburg. To be greeted by a beauty, the new top spec Titan Carbon 29er Ultimate. It looked great and has some great components, full XX1, SRAM carbon wheels and RockShox SID XX. Then I saw the price...almost 60k. It looked a bit high, until I saw the beauty standing a few bikes away, a Momsen Vipa. Specs are almost the same, XX1 with front and rear suspension provided by Fox CTD and ZTR Crest wheels. And price...only 49k. Then I knew it, Titan lost the plot. I much rather have the Vipa. It just is a beter bike, not even mentioning the 10k you will save by buying one
  21. Ja another what bike to get thread. I have a friend that is still riding on his dads old trek 800 bike from the 90's. His budget is 12k and that must include tubeless. He is just over the 2meters tall (2.03 or something) and weighs 107kgs. As he is a gym fanatic i doubt if he will drop his weight. He did buy a momsen 429 but he had endless issues and it looks like the XL was too small so he got rid of it again. (dont want to go into too much details) He prefers new but if it is a not too old he would consider. Let me know what you think.
  22. just got this mailed to me... Medium and Large expected mid August (17 inch = med) frame weight 1050grams rigid 650b forks also available Smalls available October Retail +-R10 000
  23. It may be too late but I have just ordered a 2013 Momsen AL329 with S frame. Was wondering if anyone had an opinion as to whether this would be a good buy for me, being a woman of 1.64m. Had a 26", wanted to upgrade and was told 29 would be better. Tks.
  24. Good day fellow cyclists I am looking at buying a new momsen that will have tubeless ready tires and rims and I am currently running tube. I want to know what are the pro's and con's of having tubeless over tube What additional tools, parts, spares and extras I need to get if i'm going tubeless. Thank you in advance.
