  1. I bought a mountain bike roughly 2 years ago, and don't think I've done more than 20kms on it since. I was convinced (much to my objection), to go straight into cleats without really learning to ride the thing first. To say I fell a lot is an understatement. I was constantly on the floor, stuck under the bike. This was a huge put-off as a beginner, and I slowly lost interest and became more and more terrified of getting on the bike. I recently decided to sell my bike, but have now decided to give it one more go before I get rid of the thing. Where do I begin?????!!!!! I can't go out onto the road as I'm absolutely terrified I'd just ride into a car or fall under one! (I'm really that bad!) I'm like an awkward toddler learning to ride a bike for the first time, except I'm stuck to the thing! And I don't know anyone else who rides, let alone as complete a beginner as I am! Are there any BeginnerBeginnerLikeReallyBeginner groups that meet anywhere? Or anywhere I can go to just try to learn to stay on the bike? :-D I'm in Northcliff by the way.
  2. Hi guys. Has anybody found any details on the race stop at Waterpoint 3 on the 55km route this year? We arrived there at around 12:15, and were all stopped from continuing the race. There was some indication that the medical team stopped the race due to the heat, but we were also told during the commute back to the venue (on the "wagon of shame" an hour later...) that we missed the cut-off time for waterpoint 3. I would just like some clarity, as there was no mention of any cut-off times on the website or final instructions. I also mailed the race office, have had no reply from them. Just for info, I started in Batch A8, 8:45, so we were on the course for around 3 hours 30 min when we were stopped. Does anybody have any helpful information?

  4. Hi, I am planning a MTB trail + Bush camping trip. I have the everything I need including a suitable location. The only missing element is a trailer to attach to my bicycle, or something that sort to help transport some of the camping goods. I know that this is not a very common MTB experience, and I have searched for a trailer at numerous cycling/sports stores without any luck and multiple dumbstruck expressions from store assistants. But I imagine being out there in the bush with nothing but a tent and my bike to be something spectacular. If anyone knows where I may find a trailer or perhaps someone who could fabricate one for me, PLEASE let me know. Thanks,
  5. Saturday 25th, I was privalaged enough to ride one of the best Mountain Bike Races to date. The Burgersfort "Wildevy MTB" takes a relatively flat course and turns it into a pleasure park ride of note! A well laid out mix of jeep and single track have made this race a 50, 20 or 10 km pump track (depending on what you ride). So despite the fact that there are no major climbs pushing your heart rate up, you are constantly out of the saddle to keep your bike in the zone. Well done to Driekie and Pieter Heyns, and thier team for a well organised race with an awesome country feel. For those of you looking for great race http://www.wildevymtb.co.za
  6. This might be a bit of an ask, but I was wondering if anyone on the forum located in Gauteng would be happy to show me how one goes about servicing a mountain bike. I put quite a lot of kms onto the bike cycling to and from work (about 150km a week) and I would like to learn to do the kind of service that you get when you take your bike into the shop. I have a copy of Zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance, but it would be great to get some input on my specific setup. The bike in question is fairly new. It is a 29er scott hardtail with: - air shocks - hydraulic discs - 1x10 shimano drivetrain (originally 3x10) - rear XT derailleur - tubeless 29" tyres I'd obviously be happy to pay for this lesson (in cash or beer or the like). Thanks in advance!

  8. So looking at the Isuzu competition https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/articles/competitions/enter-now-isuzu-trucks-pe-plett-entries-up-for-grabs-r2416 Clearly I don't train enough, week one is easy, but week 2 will be a tough week for my level of training. (getting 3000m of climbing in). Never mind week 4 with 12 hours of riding in a week For you guys doing a 4hr Clarens marathon, is the isuzu challenge in the ball park for your weekly training effort?
  9. I am from out of town. Looking for a riding companion to show me some routes in Nelspruit. Can ride in the morning between 5am and 9am. Staying at the Casino Hotel.
  10. The idea behind designing and manufacturing a floor pump seems simple. Build one that will inflate a wheel and have a reliable, trustworthy gage. You only have to look at Topeak's range of floor pumps to realise it's not that easy, especially when taking the added demands of mountain bikers into consideration. Enter Topeak's JoeBlow Mountain. 11. Barberton, a small historical town bordering Swaziland, yet only a mere 4 hour drive from Johannesburg to this tranquil destination. The Barberton Rotary Club launched the Barberton Mountain Bike Classic 19 years ago, which makes it one of the oldest and first official mountain bike races in the country. This tradition will continue with the next Barberton XCM MTB Challenge taking place on 31 January 2015. Pre-entries are open and you can enter at www.cycleevents.co.za or www.barbertonxcm.co.za Barberton is known for the Barberton daisy, the first stock exchange of the world, and the newly launched Geotrail which is a very interesting route that explains the over 3.5 billion year old rocks – believed to be the oldest in the world. Don’t let the beauty of Barberton fool you! The Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge is not as delicate as a daisy! Following the feedback we received from some of the cyclists the decision was made to amend some of the routes and to add an additional route. The race boosts 5 different categories; · The “very delicate” 20km Fun ride · The “delicate” 30km Half marathon · The “not so delicate” 48km half marathon · The “not so delicate” 77km Full marathon and · The “not so delicate” 110km Ultra marathon The Barberton XCM route is one of the toughest in the country and rubs shoulders with races such as the Cape Epic and even the “Le Tour de France”. The Ultra Marathon cyclists will peak their 110km route at just under 1,800m above sea-level, whilst the 20km fun ride cyclists will peak at just under 700m above sea-level. All races will start and end at the Barberton High School sports fields. With a festival-like atmosphere, there is much for the fans and supporters to do whilst waiting for the cyclists to return from their thrilling adventure ride. This incredibly scenic route takes you up the Makhonjwa Mountains with majestic views over the De Kaap Valley, through nature reserves, dams and very close to the Swaziland border. According to Nic Eksteen, President of the Barberton Rotary Club, this race is the perfect opportunity for cyclists to test their fitness and skill. Eksteen is very excited about the changes to the current routes which include single tracks, guaranteed to make the race more exciting and challenging. For more information regarding the routes and profiles, the Rotary, stalls, sponsorships, accommodation in town and tourist attractions, please visit www.barbertonxcm.co.za. 20. South Africa’s “first superbike” has created conversations around the world.
