  1. Banned cyclist to collect huge damages payout by Agency Staff, February 02 2016, 06:00 Agency Staff February 02 2016, 06:00MADRID — The Spanish government has been ordered to pay more than €720,000 in damages to former cyclist Roberto Heras for his reversed suspension for doping in 2006-08. Spain’s national court in Madrid said in its decision that the amount of €724,904.86 corresponded to what Heras could have earned during his two-year suspension. After testing positive for the banned hormone EPO in September 2005 after the Vuelta a Espana, Heras had his victory in the race stripped and was banned for two years by the Spanish cycling federation, causing him to retire. The ban was subsequently overturned in the Spanish courts in 2012 due to irregularities in the screening of his urine test. Judge Berta Santillan Pedrosa ruled the Spanish government was responsible for the error and liable to compensate Herras. Lawyers for the state have until next Monday to lodge an appeal. The cyclist and his company, which manages his image rights, lodged their case against the state in January last year, claiming more than €1m in compensation to offset losses caused by the sanction. The decision is another legal setback in the fight against doping in Spain, which has often been accused of being soft on drugs in sport. 2. Hi guys, is there any bloem hubbers here and will there be any rides over this weekend 15/16/17 Jan 2016? Thanks
  3. Good day all I'm heading to the Cape next weekend. Going to be staying a stone's throw from Gordon's Bay. Is it safe to ride between Gordon's Bay and Hermanus on the R44 and R43? Looks like it will make for awesome riding... Otherwise, suggested road routes in the area? Thanks!!
  4. I'm planning on spending time getting some road riding done in the week between Christmas and New Years. Will be riding out of Midrand and seeing where the road takes me, probably a different direction each day. I don't plan on pushing too hard, more sightseeing type rides, so probably average around 25km/h, leaving quite early, perhaps stopping for some breakfast on the way. If anybody is interested in joining, let me know.
  5. Hi looking for a good place to go Everesting in Stellenbosch, Somerset West , Betty's bay. I'm looking for a steep hill/gradient in these areas , was thinking of Hans se Kop. Looking for road or mtb routes .Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks
  6. Hi All. I know this is another topic that has been discussed in depth, but with new stuff always hitting the market I need to know what is a good carbon road shoe to purchase ? Lets say a budget of about R3500 or so. I have large wide feet , so need something that will accommodate the width. Have not been around to try on anything yet, but was advised that the Shimano R321 - http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/products/road/018sh_r321.php?pSccontentsPro or R171 http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/products/road/019sh_r171.php?pSccontentsPro would be a good option to go, Shimano SA don't have stock of the R260. I want to buy something good the first time around that will last me a few years. What other options are available locally and who keeps a good range of shoes in the Durban area ? Thanks.
  7. Hi guys I did a quick search, but couldn't find anything specific to my problem. I'm a roadie noob. I'm borrowing a road bike for 94.7. I've had four punctures in the last four rides. It's rather irritating. Can any roadie supply some tips/tricks of the trade so that I can actually finish rides? Normally, we mtb'ers have big, chunky, tubeless tyres filled with sealant, so punctures don't actually happen. I do have a puncture repair kit, as well as a spare tube riding along, but trying to wrench these wire-beaded Vredesteins off the rim, trying to find the blasted hole, patching it, and only then re-engage the wrestling match to get the tyre back on, while cars are whizzing past, is not exactly fun. My riding buddy (also actually a mtb'er) tried sealant in his. The sealant came out so fast with the high tyre pressure, that he got coated from shoes to helmet. There is also not enough air in the tube so that the sealant can do its job. This afternoon I'm training on my mtb again...
  8. Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice on which road wheelset would best suit me as a rider. Background: I've been using an entry level shimano wheelset for the past 7 years and would like to replace them with something a bit better. I'm a light rider @ 65kg's, enjoy climbs and am weak on the flats. I'm looking at the second hand market (around R4500) and am keen on either: Mavic Ksyrium Elite American Classic 420 Aero | 3 I will be using these wheels for training and racing. I only race a couple of times a year and can't justify 2 wheelsets. Will the aero profile of the AC improve my riding on the flats? Does anyone have experience with both of these wheels? What is the quality like of the two brands? Any advice is welcome
  9. Why would you want to buy a Specialized Roubaix in South Africa if we don't have rough road routes like in the Paris Roubaix? Surely this bicycle has other properties besides being made for cobblestones? Has anyone got such a bike? How comfortable is it over long distance? How does it climb?

  11. I have asked this question before, without any luck, so might be worth asking again. Is there group rides in the Brackenfell area? Maybe a bunch of riders not minding new people joining their crew? I have a mountian bike, and I do about 50% mountain biking and 50% road riding, just not wanting to ride alone anymore. If there is and you don't mind me joining, please forward me some details.
  12. So there is a bike on my radar for a good price, but I would like to upgrade the wheels on it to shed some weight. The standard wheelset is about 2.130kg so there's a significant amount to drop. For a budget of about R8000, whats a good upgrade ? In terms of quality and ride quality. Have looked into the below. I know Mavic make good wheels also but cant find much online locally with pricing so any input on them would be appreciated. Fulcrum Racing 3 1550g +/- R6500 http://www.fulcrumwheels.com/en/collection/road/alu/products/racing-3 Shimano Ultegra 1640g R6800 http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-ultegra-6800-cl-wheelset?quicktabs_1=1#quicktabs-1 Shimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano RS81 carbon/alloy R8500 1502g Shimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon Laminatehttp://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-rs81-c-24-carbon-wheelset?quicktabs_1=1#quicktabs-1 Thanks.
  13. Hi guys Would appreciate some help/opinion on how much I should ask for my Specialized Secteur. Selling to fund purchase of a new bike. Details: 2012 Specialized Secteur 56cm Tiagra groupset (with 105 cassette upgrade) Campagnolo Scirocco G3 wheels Gatorskin tyres (excl pedals & speed/cadence sensor)
  14. I will soon need to commute, I want to know if commuting through the R59 is safe. The area of the R59 i'm planning to commute is not close to Joburg therefore traffic is not that harsh. If the police see me on a road bike on the freeway will they stop me? Will i just be told to get off the highway or any severe punishments? The reason i have the need to commute through the R59 is that it is the fastest and most direct route to my destination. From a documentary i heard Chris Froome traveled through some highways in his teen days. Thanks in advance for help and your answers are appreciated Miguel
  15. What would be the best choice be between the following 2 bikes for enrty level or beginner rider. Merida Ride 100 or Silverback Strela 3. I will only do it for myself and fitness, planning to ride the 94.7 and Cape Town Cycle Tour and maybe small in between races.
  16. So, I ride a Bianchi with Campy 10 speed Record and Campagnolo Zendo wheels. I'm probably going to buy a second hand Bianchi that has Shimano Ultegra Electronic components and Shimano wheels. I understand, that if they're both 10 speed, I can just switch the wheels over and have the pleasure of my Zondas, but a bastardized group-set - not so cool. But, as I understand, I can't just change the cassette from the Shimanos to the Zondas as the free hub is different. Is my understanding correct? Can one just get the free hub changed, or is it a completely different wheel construction.
  17. Just an observation I've made, there aren't too many people who cycle early morning or evenings wearing reflective jackets or other items of visibility other than their front and rear lights. Firstly, is there a reason for this? Also, given that the largest part of a cyclist on a bike is the actual cyclist, would it not make sense for the cyclist to be most visible? The reason I ask is I am fairly new to cycling and wanted to understand if items like the two jackets below with LED's are considered taboo? or not practical for some reason? or just not readily available? With Winter fast approaching and most of my cycling to occur during darker periods I am hoping to understand what options are available to me or recommended to ensure I remain safe on the road. Not sure if I'm alone here or if others share the same thoughts or interests in items like the below?
  18. I am thinking of converting my road bike to running tubeless and am puzzled why this topic (for road bikes) seems to be getting so little attention on The Hub (unless I am using the wrong keywords to search). Given what an overwhelming success tubeless has been for MTB, I would have thought that more people would be looking into it for road bikes. Am I missing something?
  19. Hi Guys We are up and running on www.backtracker.io Please check FAQ on crowd.backtracker.io Do ask, posit, argue. We are in Technopark, Stellenbosch, and happy for anyone to pop around to try a demo unit - come by bike!
  20. Unfortunately there is a cyclist down this morning on the Abrey road exit (Durban bound) from the M13. Don't know the circumstances/cause but it didn't look good as CPR was taking place. Praying all ends well.
  21. After much debate I have decided to start training for a triathlon which means a bike. I'm looking to spend somewhere in the region of around R15-17k to leave myself another R3-5k for the rest of the necessities like helmet, shoes etc keeping to a nice round R20k all in for the first instalment (spending more is inevitable). After much reading and chatting to some mates in the know I have settled on a 105 groupset as the only real condition of what I'm getting with the rest of it pretty much up in the air. I'd love some advice on brands for both bike and equipment as well as the best places to go shopping around for new stuff. Thanks in advance.

  23. Hi all I have just started road cycling (have always been a runner) and am looking for a group riding from Broadacres/The Cradle, especially during the week. My fitness is decent but my cycling skills are shaky! At the moment I am up to 45ks with a 24km/h average. I am in JHB over the whole festive season, and am really keen to do some longer rides. Don't feel that comfortable riding on my own. Thanks! Felicity
  24. Hopefully I'm not duplicating something already done. While completing my annual leave form (December holidays), for HR, it got me thinking about my ride plans for December. Considering I plan to be 1600Km away from my normal (sometimes boring) training routes, I thought it might be useful to know where other hubbers will be riding (not only for me, but for everyone planning on riding at their holiday destinations). I know there are the various threads already listing where group rides take place, but this can be one central place for the December holiday rides only (say 15-Dec to 05-Jan, give or take a few days). Kleinmond, WC, is my base for 2 weeks - so a few rides to GB/Somerset West, Hermanus, or at Oak Valley/Lebanon Forests are on my list. No skinny wheels for me this year, but I'm willing to join a road ride if there are any.
  25. After an early season of working towards team goals, David Maree will be hoping to defend his title at the Emperors Palace Classic in Johannesburg on Sunday, April 13. Click here to view the article
