  1. Hi My gardener picked an activity card in Tokai this morning, it belongs to a PC Snyman. Anyone know him so I can return it to him
  2. So our regular Tokai plantation training ride has been closed indefinitely.Being fortunate enough to stay in Tokai our ride 3-4 times a week would be from home up through Tokai trails to the Silvermine gate. I have just been up to check and they say it might remain off limits to bikers ...for up to 2 months. So what are the alternatives... 1.Are the allowing mtnbikers onto the Silvermine section of the trail in that case we could bike up Oue Kaapse weg and in through the main gate. 2 The deer-path ? is the parking still dodgy at Rhodes memorial late afternoon..or I believe some guys are parking at Kirstenbosch gardens. i wonder if they would let us through the Swaanswyk gate and across up to the Silvermine gate?
  3. I've just read on the Tokai MTB Facebook page that a number of trails have been consumed by the fire. I am gutted, no pun intended. Cobra, Mamba, Lizard, Boulders, DH 0,1,2. I'm speechless...
  4. Hi Guys, I am FRESH into Cape Town from JHB and need to find out where the guys ride Mountainbike here? I am fairly compotent with the MTB, so I'm keen for some good distance rides on Saturdays and possibly during the week? Anyone who is keen to maybe chaparone me for a ride or two, or if there are any friendly regular groups, please let me know if I could join? Any help would be appreciated.
  5. Hi Hubbers, Please find the minutes from the AGM/Feedback meeting here. We will put up the presentation we showed some time next week so that it makes more sense to those who weren't at the meeting. We hope this answers some of your questions but know that it won't answer them all! Hope you all get in a great ride this weekend.
  6. Hi guys, Just to let you all know that the nominations process has come to an end, and once all was counted, there were 9 nomination e-mails, resulting in 9 lucky individuals who were nominated to the TokaiMTB committee for the year of 2015. Notices will be going out to those nominated, and they will need to indicate whether they are prepared to run for a position on the TokaiMTB committee. The cut-off for this process is 6th February. Once that process has been completed, and the final shortlist has been compiled, a list of the Nominees will be posted here, and on the Tokai Trail Builders Association and Tokai MTB Facebook page. Please remember that in order to vote for your preferred committee member to be in the Committee, you need to be present at the AGM, which is being held on 18th February at the River Club in Observatory @ 17h30. In order for a Nominee to be eligible for a position on the Committee, they too need to be there for the AGM. Remember - NO proxy votes allowed. You MUST be there to vote. On the evening, each Nominee will get an opportunity to tell us a little bit about themselves and why they believe they will be a good fit for the committee. You will then be given a small form with 5 blank spaces, where you will indicate your chosen committee members. Portfolios will not be assigned at the AGM, these will be decided by the committee itself when it meets for the first time following the AGM. Thanks all for your participation, and I expect to see you at the River Club on the 18th to vote for your committee members. Myles Mayhew
  7. Has any body got a credible account of the assault on a mountain-biker up near the turn off to the mast section. Apparently it took place last Thursday. 22-01-2015 .
  8. You were riding UP the trail known as DH2 at about 4h15 / 4h30 this afternoon, on your Bianchi Methanol (kick-ass bike, btw) and myself and Marko35s confronted you and informed you that the trail in question was categorised as a mono-directional trail, and as such it was against the rules of the trail system (and by extension TMNP) to ride up said trails. Despite at various points trying to explain that it was both dangerous and against the rules to be riding up a Downhill Only trail, you continued to raise your voice and accuse us of being "gods of the mountain" and "downhillers" and accuse us of creating an "us and them" environment whereby only downhillers needs are seen to. Unfortunately, your instant reaction upon being confronted was one of righteous indignation, arrogance, entitlement and shock at being told that you cannot ride up a trail designated as Downhill only. Your instant attitude was one of aggression, repeatedly telling us that you were "not afraid of us", "don't care how big we are", "do this all the time" and "just want us to all work together" Despite your protestations and attempts at justification (which were numerous) the fact remains that you were riding up a trail that people descend without the expectation of having someone in their way, coming in the opposite direction. The average speed of the majority of riders that come down there does hit 50 plus KPH (the top rider does that entire trail in just 20 seconds) and if you were to encounter someone coming down said trail, there is no way in hell you would hear and / or see them in time in order to react and pull out the trail (despite how experienced you say you are) Now, I know you took none of what Mark & I said to heart, as your opinion of yourself was entirely too inflated in order to accept that you were doing something wrong and were at fault. Despite that, what you are is a typical case study in why this country is going to the dogs. A blatant disregard for the rules of the trail that you (may not, come to think of it) pay to ride, as well as an increasing level of self entitlement which causes you to think that you can do anything without being confronted, as long as you have the louder voice and can try to justify your actions to a level that you think that your actions are okay. The excuses which we were given were, amongst others: I always do it It's the best trail to test your ascending technical skills You're experienced, and can move out the way in time for those coming down You ride without music, so can hear people coming It's god's country, and we should all be able to enjoy it I (as in me) am a downhiller, so I'm only looking out for Downhillers (I'm not a downhiller, btw - I just ride) Who makes up the rules? I didn't sign up for them (you did, actually, when you paid for your annual pass - which I'm assuming you have, btw) It's quiet I paid to ride here You're 57 and you don't care what the rules are (followed by "I just want us all to get along") You ride where you want to... We're doing more damage by pushing our bikes up the trails (we weren't, btw - we pushed up the jeep track as it's much easier. We push up NEXT to the trail when we go to the top of a downhill section) Etc etc. See, the thing is (whatever your name is) - what we tried to say (repeatedly, and every time we said it your voice just got louder and you interrupted us more often) is that you can NOT ride up a trail designated as Downhill Only. End of story. Directionality is one of the few things that maintains order in trail systems, and is shown on the Tokai MTB website, the entry board to the park (designated as highly technical downhill trails) and in signposts on the mountain itself. In your own words, you've previously come up against folks like us who have told you that what you are doing is wrong. Despite that, you continued to do it. Ignorance is not a justification, as by your own words you have been riding there for more than 4 years. The reason you cannot ride up a downhill only trail is that it is dangerous. Not from a technical perspective, but for one single reason. Riders do not expect you to be coming in the opposite direction. As such, they are not looking out for riders ascending, and when they come down at 30 / 40 / 50 kph they will have to take drastic avoiding action and by all likelihood end up injuring not only themselves, but also you in the process. It's the same reason that driving the wrong way down a 1-way street is in no way justifiable. I do hope this gets to you, and that you calm your horses (and sense of entitlement - the force is strong on that one) However - I do regret my profanity - at the time, that was the only way that I could get you to shut up and let me speak, besides just talking louder than you. Whatever your name is, know this. You are not only endangering other riders, you are endangering the access to the park itself. If we (as mountain bikers) cannot adhere to the rules of the park, our attempts to better our relationship with the park and lobby for additional trail (yes, the committee is lobbying for a dedicated climbing trail with suitable technicality, linking up all the trails, but you didn't let us get to that, did you) and all the work over the past year is for naught. But, at the end. I hope you do not continue to ride up the trails designated as down only. If only to prevent somebody from ploughing into you (on bike or fist) in the very near future...
  9. Hi guys I rode Tokai today for the first time and my freaking GoPro broke off the handlebar mount...I am almost certain it was on the first few bits of singletrack as you go through the gate and which is on your left...So if anyone finds it please let me know It is the original Black Edition in the waterproof case and has a 32 GB SD card in it (which should have some climbing vids on if you watch them). Any help much appreciated. Thanks, Cuan
  10. This month we we offer more love to the Switchback trail (Bridal path). We reached the halfway point in July and need to tackle the rest which is by far the worst. This needs to be a playful trail again and to get it back to the playfulness lost to erosion, we need your help! Tokai parking at 9am (long trek up, don't miss the lift) Bring gloves, water, a tool of your choice.. See you there!
  11. Hi Guys, Just wanted to let all you Tokai forest riders know there's a new mountain bike coffee hang out in Steenberg Village. We found it the other day (its only been open since 11th July but awesome stop off place on cycle route to and from the forest.
  12. I found a pair of Specialized gloves at the bike wash at the Tokai parking today. If they're yours, let me know. Otherwise, does SANParks have a trustworthy lost and found person I can hand them to?
  13. This weekend saw a few very near nasty crashes involving riders going down the ONLY LEGAL bike trails in Tokai and groups of joggers jogging up the MTB trails. We pay, they don't. They have full FREE use of the entire mountain trail in Tokai as well as any mountain in Cape Town. We are restricted to 2 trails.... (DH and Snakes) Someone is going to get hurt soon. And as usual no one seems to know whats going on or what to do about it... so for now, if you downhill, prepare for some lekker human cushions on the way down... (Hint: boobies make good air bags. ) PS, going over a jump is apparently considered reckless riding?????????
  14. Hi Guys With the Mast Challenge taking place on Saturday, what will Tokai be like? Will sections be cordoned off etc?
  15. My father in law came off on Monday up on one of the single tracks in tokai. Firstly thank you to the couple who phoned us off my dads phone. (hope you are reading this). You were a great help. Then the guy with the specialized stumpjumper expert HT (he lives in Tokai). Thank you for staying with him till I got there and stayed on and rode with me down. Just some news on my dad (crazy fearless 60 year old). He broke his neck, two of the vertebrae in his lower neck broke, one broke badly and VERY almost paralyzed him as seen on CT scan..... He is being operated on tomorrow morning. They are fusing the vertebrae that are affected. THANK YOU for your help in a huge way!. Hope to see you out there again. Rolf
