  3. The Wannabees Cycling Club of Somerset West is providing a splendid holiday opportunity to visiting mountain bikers. The club is now offering an opportunity to join your friends and family on the club’s trails for the year-end holiday period at a much-reduced fee. Share in their glowing admiration of the incredible privilege of being able to meander amongst the vines situated at the foot of the majestic Helderberg Mountain. The club’s trails are mostly family friendly and there are more than 90kms of exploration opportunity, which should satisfy the exploration urge of most visiting mountain bikers. View the trailmap here: http://wannabteam.com/cycling-routes/mtb-routes/ The club is offering a 3-month holiday permit, valid from November to January at a fantastic value of only R150 per person. Please contact the club’s secretary at: secretary@wannabteam.com, to arrange your purchase. Please do not ride the club’s trails without a valid permit. (The trails are marshalled). If you need a light, you shouldn't be on the trail. No helmet, no ride. Stay on the trail, and obey all direction markers. The club still offers their regular day permits @R40 per day per person which is available at local bicycle shops in the Helderberg basin during office hours, at Somerbosch Wine Estate 7 days a week from 09:00 – 16:30 and, 24/7 at the reception desk of the NH Lord Charles Hotel. Let the fun begin…

I'm from JHB and My current trails comprise: -Van Gaalens -Heia Safari -Avianto I was hoping guys that ride these areas would take the time to post what other gems you have found anywhere from the cradle area, muldersdrift, krugersdorp to Hartebeespoort so that guys riding outta JHB can explore something new. 11. I missed the Eden Classic last weekend, and I am really bummed that I could not ride the amazing route. Is it possible to ride the route outside competition time? Where can one park to access the trails? Is it safe to ride in that area? Any info will be much appreciated!
  12. Hi, I am planning a MTB trail + Bush camping trip. I have the everything I need including a suitable location. The only missing element is a trailer to attach to my bicycle, or something that sort to help transport some of the camping goods. I know that this is not a very common MTB experience, and I have searched for a trailer at numerous cycling/sports stores without any luck and multiple dumbstruck expressions from store assistants. But I imagine being out there in the bush with nothing but a tent and my bike to be something spectacular. If anyone knows where I may find a trailer or perhaps someone who could fabricate one for me, PLEASE let me know. Thanks,

  17. Hi... So i've moved to Blairgowrie and looking for places to ride - both road and mtb. Drove past Delta park, down past Victory Park shopping centre and up towards Cresta today and saw a lot of people on their mtb's all around... So i'm wondering if anyone knows / have any info on these areas and possible trails to ride? Delta Park seems to be fenced off with a lot of people heading there with bikes, dogs and picnic baskets, so i'm guessing / hoping it's a good option for a nice ride? Also - on googlemaps it looks like there's a Braamfontein Spruit trail that goes all the way from Emmerentia dam to Witkoppen - how's that? Anyone ever rode there? Thanks
  18. Hi everyone we are currently busy with the development of some trails on our farm in the North West just outside Zeerust it is situated about 250km from JHB and the farm is surrounded by high fences and there wil be wide open grass/camping sites underneath some trees right next to a fresh water spring that flows into a dam where there wil be bass fishing allowed . The trails will mostly be some cattle trails and ofcourse alot of tecnical through the beautifull scenery over mountains and through wide open grass plains , the farm has game on it such as Impala , Redhartebeest , Blesbuck , Kudu , Wharthog and some smaller antelope and the list of animals wil grow quickly . There wil be ablution blocks ( sorry if im spelling incorrectly ) and electricity points ! Its in a safe area and extremely quite and a great place to relax in the bush ! I just want to know what you guys and girls on the forum think about this !! Any info would be appreciated !
  19. Recently moved to Plett. Anyone know what the routes are like above the crags, see link below. Seems well used and looks like great terrain up there. Any feedback appreciated. http://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#14/23.40800/-33.91057/gray/bike
  20. You were riding UP the trail known as DH2 at about 4h15 / 4h30 this afternoon, on your Bianchi Methanol (kick-ass bike, btw) and myself and Marko35s confronted you and informed you that the trail in question was categorised as a mono-directional trail, and as such it was against the rules of the trail system (and by extension TMNP) to ride up said trails. Despite at various points trying to explain that it was both dangerous and against the rules to be riding up a Downhill Only trail, you continued to raise your voice and accuse us of being "gods of the mountain" and "downhillers" and accuse us of creating an "us and them" environment whereby only downhillers needs are seen to. Unfortunately, your instant reaction upon being confronted was one of righteous indignation, arrogance, entitlement and shock at being told that you cannot ride up a trail designated as Downhill only. Your instant attitude was one of aggression, repeatedly telling us that you were "not afraid of us", "don't care how big we are", "do this all the time" and "just want us to all work together" Despite your protestations and attempts at justification (which were numerous) the fact remains that you were riding up a trail that people descend without the expectation of having someone in their way, coming in the opposite direction. The average speed of the majority of riders that come down there does hit 50 plus KPH (the top rider does that entire trail in just 20 seconds) and if you were to encounter someone coming down said trail, there is no way in hell you would hear and / or see them in time in order to react and pull out the trail (despite how experienced you say you are) Now, I know you took none of what Mark & I said to heart, as your opinion of yourself was entirely too inflated in order to accept that you were doing something wrong and were at fault. Despite that, what you are is a typical case study in why this country is going to the dogs. A blatant disregard for the rules of the trail that you (may not, come to think of it) pay to ride, as well as an increasing level of self entitlement which causes you to think that you can do anything without being confronted, as long as you have the louder voice and can try to justify your actions to a level that you think that your actions are okay. The excuses which we were given were, amongst others: I always do it It's the best trail to test your ascending technical skills You're experienced, and can move out the way in time for those coming down You ride without music, so can hear people coming It's god's country, and we should all be able to enjoy it I (as in me) am a downhiller, so I'm only looking out for Downhillers (I'm not a downhiller, btw - I just ride) Who makes up the rules? I didn't sign up for them (you did, actually, when you paid for your annual pass - which I'm assuming you have, btw) It's quiet I paid to ride here You're 57 and you don't care what the rules are (followed by "I just want us all to get along") You ride where you want to... We're doing more damage by pushing our bikes up the trails (we weren't, btw - we pushed up the jeep track as it's much easier. We push up NEXT to the trail when we go to the top of a downhill section) Etc etc. See, the thing is (whatever your name is) - what we tried to say (repeatedly, and every time we said it your voice just got louder and you interrupted us more often) is that you can NOT ride up a trail designated as Downhill Only. End of story. Directionality is one of the few things that maintains order in trail systems, and is shown on the Tokai MTB website, the entry board to the park (designated as highly technical downhill trails) and in signposts on the mountain itself. In your own words, you've previously come up against folks like us who have told you that what you are doing is wrong. Despite that, you continued to do it. Ignorance is not a justification, as by your own words you have been riding there for more than 4 years. The reason you cannot ride up a downhill only trail is that it is dangerous. Not from a technical perspective, but for one single reason. Riders do not expect you to be coming in the opposite direction. As such, they are not looking out for riders ascending, and when they come down at 30 / 40 / 50 kph they will have to take drastic avoiding action and by all likelihood end up injuring not only themselves, but also you in the process. It's the same reason that driving the wrong way down a 1-way street is in no way justifiable. I do hope this gets to you, and that you calm your horses (and sense of entitlement - the force is strong on that one) However - I do regret my profanity - at the time, that was the only way that I could get you to shut up and let me speak, besides just talking louder than you. Whatever your name is, know this. You are not only endangering other riders, you are endangering the access to the park itself. If we (as mountain bikers) cannot adhere to the rules of the park, our attempts to better our relationship with the park and lobby for additional trail (yes, the committee is lobbying for a dedicated climbing trail with suitable technicality, linking up all the trails, but you didn't let us get to that, did you) and all the work over the past year is for naught. But, at the end. I hope you do not continue to ride up the trails designated as down only. If only to prevent somebody from ploughing into you (on bike or fist) in the very near future...
  21. Hey Everyone Has anyone done a Mtb ride from Gauteng(Randburg) to Pilanesberg(Sun City), Is it at all possible doing it without tar road?
  22. Anyone know of any overnight trails to do in South Africa?
  23. Been thinking about having a set up at Honingklip mountain bike trails; Cyclists can either complete the indemnity forms on-line and e-mail them to me, along with proof of payment - and we will have the permit ready for them OR TRUSTING the cyclists to complete the form on arrival and put the money into a 'box' Will this be accepted and will it be abused??? The reason is, I dont want to have someone there all day and everyday for cyclists, I would prefer to trust people - we do this for our 4x4 trail and except for maybe one or two - people are generally honest.
  24. Hey Guys and Gals So after a few years of coastal holidays and the start of my MTB riding on the Knysna trails last year, we will be doing things differently this year. We will be heading to JHB for about 12 days over the festive season. This is a considerable amount of time away from my local trails and riding, not the best option but we will make the most of it either way. So the question is do I bother taking the bikes? Now before you say well duh why not, here is some further info: · We have a vehicle which can be used but I would not want to dirty or damage it, can probably make a plan with blankets etc as the backseat folds. · We do not have travel bags or boxes for the flight so would need to rent, if it can work to drop in JHB then pick up again to travel back to CPT to save paying for the full time away. · We have two young kids coming with and travelling with them is difficult enough in terms of space so gonna be tough with bikes · The wife rides but is still getting into it. She rides a few times a month where I ride a few times a week · She has done Tokai once and Majik Forest a few times, I enjoy the trails and like a good downhill single track thrown in which I ride slower with her. · We are both very weary of JHB/Gauteng after a driveway hold up/hijacking about 2 years back, never really got over it. · Staying in Craighall across from The Spruit so I suppose that would be default option and maybe elsewhere depending on time, distance and fun factor. Not sure what other info would make a difference or help with some good advice. Is it safe to ride alone or with the wife? Is there a fun factor at The Spruit or is it mostly flat single/ jeep track combos, where endurance will be the winner? What distance options are there or where would I find a good map of the area to try and plot some routes? Cheers Lee
  25. Hi all, I'm doing some work with Isuzu over the next two months, part of which is creating hyperlapse videos and reviews of MTB routes so that you can check out the route online before making a mission. Here are the routes we've covered before so that you can get an idea of what I'm talking about: http://www.isuzu.co.za/experience-mountain-bike-trails Because I have limited time I need to be picky about the routes we choose to do so I'm asking all you to help me out. What are the best routes/trails in the Western Cape (we're currently geographically limited)? What routes would you most like to see a video of? Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance, Albert
