  1. What are the options for getting trained as a bicycle mechanic in South Africa? General (MTB focused), and with specifics like wheel building, suspension, etc? Any feedback about specific options would also be appreciated.
  2. The combination of cold winter mornings and live coverage of the Tour de France makes training indoors the go-to for many cyclists and triathletes alike. Not only can you leave the thermals and toe caps off, but your indoor session can be just as effective (in certain cases, more effective), than training outdoors. There are a huge variety of training apps and aids out on the market, all designed to make your training easier, keep you entertained and make you want to train indoors. Although we are spoilt for choice with all the aids out on the marketing, let’s face it; training indoors isn’t nearly as exciting as getting out there. We know all the tricks in the book; from racing other cyclists online right through to watching the Tour in hope that it will inspire you to push through the next interval set. Although indoor training is mentally tough, there is one key factor that can change it for you. Music. The beat that drives your legs forward, the lyrics that transport you from the confines of four walls, the emotions that come from a few minutes of beautiful noise. Listening to music while you’re training can help your fatigue, boost your mood and helps you feel less pain. Choosing the right type of music for your training is what stands between you and the finish line. We want to know what your top three songs are for training indoors! Every week for the course of three weeks, we will award a pair of CycleOps socks to the best liked song list. At the end of the three weeks, we will award a CycleOps Winter Training Package to the overall top liked list. Turn up the music, close your eyes and let the beat take over. Submissions should be made in the following format, Artist, Song and Album (if known). The winner for each week will be announced every Monday (10th, 17th & 24th July 2017) with the grand price being announced on Tuesday the 25th July 2017

  4. I hate: The alarm. It makes me feel nauseous at 4amThe fear for the first 15 minutes that I am underdressedThe hissing sound of pavement irrigation systems that make me think I have a punctureThose same irrigation systems spraying me while I am worrying that I have a punctureMunicipal water leaks across the road that spray up onto shoes and legs and backsideRunners, pedestrians and recycling dudes in dark clothes on my side of the road that loom out of the darkness like cattleMy visible breath as I’m climbing which reminds me that I am not going fast enough to disperse itThe thought that the flashing rear lights on bikes I’m riding behind might cause an epileptic seizureRepair channels cut into the tar across the road which are darker than the other tar making me wonder if they are deep dongas in shadow or new tar. Bunny hop or proceed in faith? The temperature drop while descending into dipsCars that keep their lights on bright while coming towards meStreet lights that for some reason best known to themselves go out just as I get to themSo much snot and tears coming out of me that I worry I might dehydrateThe loss of feeling in hands and feet as they slowly freezeI love: The brotherhood of cyclists up at that time of the morningWatching the sun come up and the mist across the landThe coffee and hot shower after the rideThe warm feeling of blood arriving in my legs as I get to the first climbThe knowledge that I am out on the road while lots of people are trying to train on indoor trainers or spin classesThe friendly runners and other people up and about when everyone else is still in bedThe bubble of solitude that riding in the dark brings. Can’t see my bike computer and can’t see much beyond my front light. Just riding to feel and my thoughts.Reading the early morning newspaper headline posters on the side of the roadKnowing almost down to the degree celcius what layers I need to wearBeing out on my bike

    MTB Rivonia

Hi I been riding for a few months now. I am looking for someone/group to ride with in the morning. I live a stones throw from the spruit and ride it on weekends but not too keen on doing it alone in the early mornings during the week. Anyone looking for a riding partner or someone to train with during the week? Mountain bike in and around Rivonia, Bryanston I am no speed demon. Probably avg 20km/h on spruit going up and down to Bryanston drive Anyone willing to take a new training partner under their wing?
  6. Hi everyone, I am looking for a bit of help. I am looking at getting into this sport and have been for while, so it is only inevitable until I start. The point of this post is regarding actually going for a ride. Now I have searched this section, however, nothing came up to exactly what I am looking for. See below a couple questions I have: I have 'ridden' a mtb before, but some years ago when I was a kid. Riding mtb on a trail I suspect is very different. What are the very first techniques/positioning/skills one should pay attention to honing when out on a trail? Trail markings - how easy is the 'easy route'? is it for the wife and kids, and one gets very bored quickly there? or is it the perfect route to get started? Certain skillsets (hopping etc.) are needed. Best way to learn these? I am relatively fit (swimming 1k to 2k in a training session and play a bit of sports on the weekend), however, I am sure mtb fit is a different story. How far should one go on their first venture out? without being to short but not long enough to kill me and make me never want to come back? Also, best way to increase the distance as you go along? Tech that is vital to measure the ride? Is a Garmin computer which costs a couple grand necessary for someone who is new? Or would Strava prove to be a better starting point? I know the majority of these questions are loaded, and would depend on me as a person, so do not focus on that. What I am looking at gaining out of these questions is how YOU did it, as personal experience can be adapted and holds invaluable lessons. Thanks very much
  7. Hi there, I recently upgraded to a 29er and want to go for a good bike setup. Any recommendations on where / who to go to for the best bike setup? I look forward to your input. PS: Gauteng (Sandton, Fourways and surrounding areas preferred).
  8. Hi Hubbers Does anyone have suggestions for Trans Baviaans training routes near Cape Town (within 45min's drive)? I did most of my training last year on the peninsula because it was convenient, but I would like to start throwing in some more district road if possible. Thanks a lot!
  9. I am thinking of getting a tri coach as I want to really get involved in triathlons this year. I'm wanting a coach to help me get to a decent level (not podium type) that I can then take and work with myself. Please can you guys help me with some contacts of coaches/clubs that can help me with this. Thanks
  10. Hi Hubbers! To those of you who have been blessed with ownership of the wonderful Edge 520, have you noticed that a little screen pops up after your workout, stating the suggested recovery time before the next ride/training session? This morning I had quite an intense WO on the IDT, and it told me to recover for 72 hours , which isn't going to happen . So, who relies on this suggestion that the little machine spits out? Is the rest period based solely on your avg HR throughout the workout/ride, or what other things play a part?
  11. Hi, I am looking for training buddies in Somerset West to do some road cycling. Preferably strong people who can push me to the limit. I don't like big groups and clubs. I'm 23, would be awesome if they are my age. Thanks Andreas 0729027465 Here is my strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/1939801
  12. Hi Hubbers, My team has an entry to this years W2W Ride, I consider us quite lucky as it seems the Adventure and the Race entries went really quickly. The thing is both my riding partner and I have kids and busy jobs, I for example have thus far spent only 4 weeks at home this year. After checking the other posts on training and not finding any thing I can really use my question is this does anyone in hubland know of someone in Cape Town who can help us with a training program, especially tailored to our limited time available and my travels as taking the bike with is impossible. We want to finish really comfortably and be able to enjoy every minute. About a year ago I was fit enough to not even have worried but that has changed a bit. We are in the Cape Town area (Tokai and Durbanville). Any advice would be appreciated.

  16. hi me and partner have been training on a program last 3 of months, averaging around 11hours a week. lots of zone 2 riding and the odd intervals and races like w2w, trailseeker and DC. I expected our december program to be more hectic(want it to be) but we have been given 13,11,8,12 hour weeks for the month. No load weeks. Intervals during the week and longer zone 2 and 3 rides on weekends. how does your programs look for the month? Should we not have a 20hour + load week somewhere? anyone on daisyway or another program that can share there hours(dont have to share the detail)? thanks

  19. Hi Guys Looking into Zwift to make indoor training a little more exciting. Does anyone have any reviews or feedback on it? Is it worth it? The monthly cost isn't expensive at all. Thanks
  20. After 3 months of exclusively riding on my VR Trainer I'm afraid to admit that I've pretty much used up all the interesting programmes and imagination that I posses. As it's still a few months before my shoulder will be healed enough to be allowed out onto tar I fear that I'll lose interest in the pain being inflicted on me by my VRT. Anyone got some suggestions to spice things up a bit through different power based workouts or specific intervals that are: a) a bit different b) beneficial c) FTP or PPO rather than heart rate or perceived effort based d) don't drag and seem longer than they are Please share your favourites.
  21. I ride 175mm standard 52/39 Ultegra cranks. I'm debating whether I should change to Compact 172.5mm 50/34 cranks for the Jock Classique. I live and ride in Jo'burg, so don't require Compact cranks all year round. I rode the Maluti Double 90 on my standard setup and really died on the major hills even though I ran a 28 tooth cassette. I rode the Jock Classique last year and managed the hills, but would like to improve my time this year. So, two questions: 1. Is it okay to train on Standard cranks and then change cranks just for race day? 2. Will the Compact cranks make a significant difference to my climbing ability on Jock?

  23. I have been introduced to cycling a year ago and as any newbie had my fair share of spills and aches during this time. I managed to get to my fitness to a level where i can survive, and more importantly, enjoy the weekend rides. As winter is approaching I cant see myself doing any of the night rides (Wed +Thu) that I would normally do , so I need some additional training to keep working on my fitness. I have come across 2 cycling studios - Cycleopsvip in Rivonia, and Powercycling in Centurion, that offer the kind of training I had in mind. I am not a fan of going to Virgin, waiting for a spin bike and then have someone shout at me for an hour... Which studio have you used - and what results have you obtained? I have never done any FTP tests etc, and I am not trying to become a Tdf winner, i merely want to keep chipping away at the fitness and endurance block...
  24. Good day everyone. Since Discovery Vitality has decided to end support for Strava, I am in need of a HRM with GPS that won't break the bank. I would like to use it for running and mtb'ing.
