  6. As most people around here will know from some comments I have made over the last few months, my sister started riding around October last year. To me, she doesn't really appear to be getting fitter or faster. I know that part of her issue is she doesn't really understand what I am explaining about gearing the bike, and I don't know how else to explain it to her. Off road she averages about 10km/h and on the road its about 15km/h, but she constantly wants to stop because she says her legs are burning. Last Sunday we did 28km on the road and by the end she wanted to throw up and cry. I found some exercises for off the bike to help build the legs but they don't appear to be helping too much. She rode a few times while I was out with a broken clavicle with some friends, but, since I have been back on the bike (around the middle of March) she rides with me 3 times a week (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday so it isn't consecutive days on the bike). She has entered the 947 cycle challenge, so I need to find a way to get her ride that distance by November. So, to my questions: 1.Am I expecting too much too soon? 2.Does anyone have recommendations on how to build her fitness levels? (Personally I think she just needs time in the saddle and to stop whining, but that approach is clearly not working ) 3.How do I explain the gearing (3x9) - maybe a video?

  8. The attention created by various diets, controversial or not, has seen a definite shift in attitudes to food types and eating habits. Natural, unprocessed foods are becoming more popular and Raw Revolution got my attention recently during a multistage MTB race. They are one of the nutrition companies trending towards a more natural nutrition option for athletes, so I was quite keen to try the product when it was offered. Click here to view the article
  9. I bought his Total Heart Rate Training book. I have sold my road bicycle and decided to do just MTB. I have some confusion regarding my HR zones and not convinced I am seeing the correct zone values. Here are my questions: Does the surface matter for the 30 minutes field test? Does it have to be offroad if I do MTB? Or can it be tar?The gravel road that I did my field test on has some steep hills with nice downhills after it. It starts off with a nice flat surface with some small inclines. Towards the 2nd half of the route the hills start. Will these hills influence my average heart rate? What I mean is will it bring down my average heart rate if the downhills are long? I don’t pedal much on these downhills, so my average heart rate will be reduced? My average heart rate for the last 20 minutes of the test is 173 bpm (which should be my lactate threshold) and my max is 181 bpm. Is this low for my average? Some guys get a max HR of over 200!Does anyone use his way of determining your HR zones and actually training by it? What I find with MTB is that my heart rate is relatively high. If i have to pedal any slower to bring it down I am going to fall over
  10. Hi there Hubbers! I've recently bought myself a Garmin Edge 810 with Heart Rate Monitor ect. After doing some research I see that to determine your Max Heart rate you must use the formula 220 - minus age? So that means my Max Heart Rate is 190. I've done a few rides where I go to 195bpm, which means the calculations is incorrect on the Garmin. I went to the Garmin Connect website where you can fill in your Heart Rate Zones, but I'm not sure how accurate this is and if I put in the correct BPM at the correct zone. I want to start a new training plan with heart rate zones but can figure out which ones is correct? Does my explanation make any sense? Your help will be highly appreciated. P.S - I'm a afrikaans boytjie so sorry for the bad english!
  11. So looking at the Isuzu competition https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/articles/competitions/enter-now-isuzu-trucks-pe-plett-entries-up-for-grabs-r2416 Clearly I don't train enough, week one is easy, but week 2 will be a tough week for my level of training. (getting 3000m of climbing in). Never mind week 4 with 12 hours of riding in a week For you guys doing a 4hr Clarens marathon, is the isuzu challenge in the ball park for your weekly training effort?
  12. I would like to hear what your opinions are regarding power meters for MTB - better on the bike or on an indoor trainer? I want to do the power training "thing" to see what all the hype is all about. I think it is all just phase that everyone is going through, I think next we will probably be using brain power meters to do training on I am thinking of buying a power meter, I like the Powertap MTB Hub. Is it really worth it? And how important is it to have the power meter during a race? Would it be ok to train with the wheel and when you do a race put on your racing wheels? I was just thinking because many people doing Cadence Cycling classes or use Watt Bikes but can't afford power meters for the bicycle, they can't see their power reading during a race. What other decent power meters really work for MTB?
  13. Has anyone used this hub in their wheelset? What is the quality of this hub like? If the wheel has been built up how much of a degreade is it when compared to the Mavic Crossmax SL wheeelset? Is it a worth while to get the hub?
  14. Hi everyone, so I am looking for one or two mountain biking buddies. I used to ride in Tokai perfectly on my own as I knew it like the back of my hand but with Tokai closed, after 2 years of staying away from the Block House I decided last weekend to go on a ride there but turned around half-way due to safety reasons. I am an average rider with intermediate skills trying to up my miles for longer races. So if there's anyone in the Southern Suburbs, mostly in the Claremont / Newlands / Rondebosch and surrounding areas who is keen on going for rides and around the same skills level, get in touch and let's see how it goes. Thanks.
  15. To reach your fitness goals and maintain them, you need to train smarter, not harder and this can be achieved by understanding your heart. Your “maximum heart rate” is the maximum number of times your heart beats in one minute. To calculate an average reading of your max heart rate, take the number 220 for men or 226 for women and minus your age. For Example 226 – 30 = 196; a 30 year old woman’s max heart rate is 196 beats per minute. Click here to view the article

CycleOps S.A. has opened a new training hub on the door step of Sandton, Boasting industry leading power based CycleOps Indoor Cycle 300 and 420 bikes as well as the popular PowerBeam trainers, our facilities will allow coached or self coached riders access to accurate power based training sessions. Our Virtual training sessions are structured on your personal Functional Threshold Power (FTP) - measured upon signup and at specified periods in between. Training can be performed in a group session in VIP with times starting from 6 - 7am then from 5 - 6pm. Alternatively if your program/working hours do not allow a group session or times then we have a separate space in VVIP with limited numbers where you can book a bike any time of the day and come through to train, times also from 6am to 6PM. We will be adding more time slots as the demand increases. Each bike has its own tablet with our bespoke training App loaded so all your personal metrics are displayed in front of you, we have a selected route/workout displayed on the HD big screens at the font of the room so you can get lost in the French Alps whilst training. Once done with your session the showers and coffee are hot, whilst your workout is automatically uploaded to the cloud onto TrainingPeaks.com, ready to be reviewed by the time you get to the office. We are running free sessions until the end of the year (18th of December), bookings are essential via mail or phone, assesments (FTP) will need to be carried out before hand and can be booked Mon-Fri between 8 am and 4pm. 22. I commute at 5AM and used to train at 5AM with a group before I started commuting earlier (new job etc). Here are a few things that help getting up early: - Riding with a group was very easy for me, knowing that you need to meet up with people motivates you to get up and go. - Prepare all your cycling goodies/pack your bag/lunch the night before - Prepare mentally - Get enough rest. Those are about the only things that really help me. To be honest, I find it very easy to turn over and continue sleeping, but I want to get out of that bad habit (happening more often recently) and get back into my routine of waking up early. For some its easier than others. I know there are guys that are out at 4AM and I might need to be doing that soon . So, what helps you get up and go ride early morning for training or commuting?

  24. Hey guys, I am farely still a newbie in MTB'ing. My furthest distance cycled so far is 34km in 2:31:30. I am currently managing 8km a morning (this is all the time I can muster at the moment, trying to squeeze in some more where I can) and my average speed is floating at around 18-19km/h. What I want to know, and I know I am still far from this goal, is what do I need to aim for to know that I am ready to start tackling stage races (my eventual goal is to do the Jo'burg to Sea). How should look at training and what benchmark do I need to aim for (average speed wise, 100km a day, etc). Your valued advice would be greatly welcome. Regards, Jan.
