  1. Mountain bike trials, also known as observed trials, is a discipline of mountain biking in which the rider attempts to pass through an obstacle course without setting foot to ground. Derived from motorcycle trials, it originated in Catalonia and is said to have been invented by the father of Ot Pi, a world champion motorcycle trials rider. Pi's father had wanted his son to learn motorcycle trials by practicing on an ordinary bicycle. Trials riding is an extreme test of bicycle handling skills, over all kinds of obstacles, both natural and man-made. It now has a strong though small following worldwide, though it is still primarily a European sport. Skills taken from trials riding can be used practically on any bicycle for balance, for example controlled braking and track standing, or balancing on the bike without putting a foot down. Competition trial bikes are characterized by powerful brakes, wide handlebars, lightweight parts, single-speed low gearing, low tire pressures with a thick rear tire, distinctive frame geometry, and no seat.
  2. Hello New to the site but wanted advice on the new gadget I have seen advertised(dont want to use the trade name in case I got into trouble). It is fixed onto the bike on the handle bar to provide a bit of cushioning/suspension when going over lumps & bumps on rides. I get quite sore thumbs & elbows after these sort of rides as I suffer from some arthritis. It looks good & would pay for it but wanted to hear what others say if they have seen it or have one. Thanks Captain

  4. I was hoping someone could suggest me a good pair of padded shorts for longer rides that doesn't break in the bank, it's very important for me ?
  5. So wheelsizes.... Just kidding. I went and did my introduction and here I am already with the first questions. I'm apparently tall and a 29" will fit me better. I'm 1.83m - i'm not too hung up on wheel sizes, at the moment looking at either a 27.5 Giant Talon 4 or a Silverback Spectra Comp 29" What I really want to know is the following: Helmets and protection. I mean I see some of the speeds you guys do and why the hell is full face helmets not recommended? I ride Enduro motorcycles and some places I see cyclist ride faster on rockier terrain. Esp downhill. I see that on the RedBull downhill stuff guys wear full face helmets and so on. Normal trail riding I guess at speed can also cause some havoc with your face? just the other day I read of a woman breaking both fron teeth off and popping her shoulder and that was on a regular mom and pop trail. Coming from the motorcycle where I wear helmet boddy protection knee pads elbow pads and neck brace and still had concussion, broken collarbone and cracked wrist etc. this is a little weird. I see no chin, face protection on those bike helmets, i see no one ride with elbow or shoulder guards, I would MAYBE see someone with knee guards but more often nothing but the little "top of the head only" helmet. Can you guys recommend some basics? Do you where any under shirt protection? Padded or otherwise? is this really only for extreme downhill? Shorts hirts and shoes These long briefs/onesies type stuff. http://img.myshopping.com.au/rsz400/cache/704/44/15FFE7A5D73BBEEBFF7465EB068CFB11DD74D3.jpg?aHR_cDovL1d1dy22bWFyay3jb0_uYXUvaW-hZ0VzL_NZQ_xJTkcvYmliMDAxLmpwZwkvNzA_LzQ_LzE-RkZFN_E-RDczQkJFRUJGRjc_NjVFQjA0OENGQjExREQ1NEQzLmpwZwAA I'm not gonna wear them. For the guys who have some manhood left.. <---Just little joke. ...do you wear padded shorts underneath then something like this over? http://d2nsgnoj157yga.cloudfront.net/images/product/None_2013_55005_001_OneIndustries_Black_Reactor_MtbShort_0--5e5ea-XL.jpg Or only the shorts. keep in mind my bike will be a Hard Tail I'm just wondering generally for XC riding what is the common preferred getup cosidering Western Cape weather , before I go to a LBS and walk out there looking like I belong in Boswell Wilky Circus as a trapeze artist. Shirt? Any shirt I guess will do as long as it's ,moisture wiking? Shoes, I don't want to get clips and those things now so will any good Merrell's or something do? Tyres. Do I go tubeless right away? I really dont want to be fixing flats by tube extraction and insertion. Do you get slime for tubes, is it only for tubeless. What do you guys roll with? Other I guess on a ride I need either a pump or bombs and a multitool? Hydration I got sorted with a camelback. Anything else I'm missing?
  6. I saw a very intersting comment on an article about the luxury cars in South Africa. What the guy was getting at is, what is the ratio between house value, car value and in our case, bike value. So I had a look at the value of my assets in relation to one another. Houses to Cars: 16:1 Houses to Bikes: 70:1 Houses to CC debt at any point in the month: 175:1 The interesting point is what people place value on, the guy was saying he lives in a complex where the houses are around R900k and there is a guy driving an X5 for around R800k and he could not understand it. So I thought it would be interesting to see what ratios normal bike pedaling South Africans have.
  7. Hi Guys I hope you guys aren't sick of answering newbie posts by now, I would really appreciate some advice on a few topics. I have recently had a knee operation so all I can do(at a high level of effort) really is cycle at the moment. If the bug bites I'll look at getting a higher quality bike but for the mean time I am looking for an entry level bike((29er) that is new. I know a second hand higher quality bike(26er) is often suggested but as I said if the bug bites I'll upgrade. I'm going to be mainly riding on the wine farms around the Cape so nothing too hectic for now. I am looking at the following bikes: "Titan Ryde 29er 2016" or "Titan Cruz 29er 2015" or "Merida Big 9 20D" My price range is between R4000 to R6000. a few questions: 1) Any other suggestions of new bikes in that price range? 2) I am just over 100kg so would these bikes be alright? 3) Best/Most resonable bike shops in the Cape? 4) I'm 1.79m, what size frame would i need? Thanks guys really appreciate the help
  8. Hi there guys and Gals, My neighbour (elderly Lady) has seen me fiddling with my bikes, and has asked me to find her an old broken bike, with or without wheels (preferably with) She wants to do some flower arrangement in her garden with it, can be rusted or what ever state by the sound of it :-) Thanks, would appreciate any help. Glen
  9. So there is a bike on my radar for a good price, but I would like to upgrade the wheels on it to shed some weight. The standard wheelset is about 2.130kg so there's a significant amount to drop. For a budget of about R8000, whats a good upgrade ? In terms of quality and ride quality. Have looked into the below. I know Mavic make good wheels also but cant find much online locally with pricing so any input on them would be appreciated. Fulcrum Racing 3 1550g +/- R6500 http://www.fulcrumwheels.com/en/collection/road/alu/products/racing-3 Shimano Ultegra 1640g R6800 http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-ultegra-6800-cl-wheelset?quicktabs_1=1#quicktabs-1 Shimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano RS81 carbon/alloy R8500 1502g Shimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon LaminateShimano WH-RS81 C24 Carbon Laminatehttp://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-rs81-c-24-carbon-wheelset?quicktabs_1=1#quicktabs-1 Thanks.
  10. Hi all I'm newbie & need some help please. I don't know a thing a bout mountain bikes but I want to get myself an entry level bike around about R5000.There are so many makes & I know that components is what one should look at , but I also don't know much about that.Could you please suggest any good quality entry level bikes? And what components name brands do I need to look for?I've heard the Silverback is made by a local company & apparently there's a certain amount of debate regarding their quality vs other more well known, but then again I've also heard the Silverback get one better components for a lower priced bike to it's competition. Seen so far the Slade 4 & Stride 20 ... think Slade is the better one? I'm sure a hard back will be fine as is cheaper too, but with decent front shocks that can lock when on road I guess ... and are brakes important for a beginner?I'm not planning on doing any racing, it's more just for being active, so a bit on hard road and a bit of dust road now and then. I'd really appreciate your advice.TIA
  11. I need a hand There is a bike in the for sale section I have my eye on. It is in Cape Town but I am in Gauteng I would like someone to go check it out for me. All seems in order and the 20 million pics ( Thanks Hairy) seem to show that all is in order but just need someone to take it for a spin.
  12. Hi Guys, I am new to The Hub and have recently posted my BMC Fourstroke for sale on here (https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/115593-bmc-fourstroke-fs02-xtslx-2012/), Gumtree and OLX. I received a call yesterday from a gentleman by the name of Nelson Luthuli. He showed immediate interest (almost a bit too keen in my opinion). Stated he would match the pending offer on the bike was sending his friend Prince round that afternoon because he was situated in Vredendal. I met up with Prince outside my offices at the Waterfront and he checked out the bike and gave Nelson the go ahead. I waited at least 15 minutes before I finally got an SMS notification for a CHEQUE DEPOSIT from an ATM in Mowbray. This was followed up by another SMS from my bank informing me that that the value of any cheque's deposited would only be available once cleared. Fortunately I have experience in the financial services industry so I was not prepared to hand over the bike even though the amount was reflecting on my statement. After querying Nelson on the phone he tried to start making up stories about his branch being in Mowbray and that he made the payment in Vredendal which was a blatant lie. I ended up sending the chap packing telling him that we would have to wait until the cheque cleared. Came as no surprise that I got a call from my bank this morning informing me that the cheque had rejected. Please watch out for these guys - I have provided details below: "Nelson Luthuli" - 083 670 5715 (nelsluth@gmail.com) "Prince" - 073 925 6139

  15. Hi Guys My Swift R838 road bike was stolen from my room yesterday. It is quite a rare and distinct bike. It has a brilliant red, white and black paint job, integrated seatpost, SRAM red and easton wheels. I realise the chances of getting her back are pretty slim but please keep an eye out. Below is a picture of the bike taken sometime. The wheels are now easton EA90's and the bar tape is black not white. Everything else remains unchanged. Thanks
  16. I'm looking to buy a new bike in the coming weeks. So far I've looked at stuff like the Rocky Mountain Element 930 and Merida Big Ninety Nine 1000. Both of these are full suss 29ers at about 25000. I ride mostly in Tokai and I want to have as much comfort and confidence going downhill as possible without compromising uphill riding. My current bike is a Silverback Alpine 26 hardtail with a very entry level SR Suntour fork so it is definitely due for an upgrade. Any thoughts on the bikes I've named? Any suggestions of other bikes?
