  1. So, City of Cape Town wants to be recognized as a cycling super city in the ilk of Euro style commuting etc. http://traveller24.news24.com/Explore/SAHolidayGuide/cape-town-aims-to-become-bicycling-super-city-20170118 My 2 cents contribution is that in order for this to become a reality, stricter law enforcement on the existing cycle routes need to be enforced. By example, Paarden Island - Town via N1 underpass. Too much poo happening there. Now Durbanville has become a bike-jack hotspot. The CoCT has the right idea, but it seems their focus is a bit off. discuss...
  2. Hi all I'm new to cycling in general and live in Moregloed (Waverley area). I would like to know if anyone knows of nice and quiet road cycling routes in the Pretoria area? Thank you in advance!
  3. Hi So strange question, the last few months of last year I had to increase my monthly mileage to reach my 6k km goal. During this time I did the cycle challenge and got sick and was off the bike for 2 weeks. Due to this, again in December I had to increase the monthly mileage to get my goal. I decided this year that 6k km was to little and wanted to increase to 7500 km as well as start entering in running races however doing this has now resulted in me being sick again. The question I would like to ask is there a multivitamin or a change in diet that I would need to change to to help the immune system out a bit? I currently get enough sleep with on average 7.5 hours a night and only drink water and Rooiboos tea during the day, meaning Caffeine intake is nothing #NotATrueCyclist. I started cycling about 2 years ago, however started properly training around mid last year when i joined a local cycling group in my area. I posted the question on this cycling group and the below list of things were raised: take multivitamin on a daily basis, and\or get a monthly shot of vitamins (B12, Vitamin B injection, Berrigloben injection)increase protein intake through out the dayrest properly especially after being sick I may have increase my efforts too quickly especially with the added runningeat my vegetablesquality over quantity with regards to yearly km ridden. May need help understanding this a bit better... In other words what is the definition quality ride? The main reason I have written this is to get everyone's thoughts on the above and for other people in a similar situation. Thanks for the help.
  4. Pink ladies cycling jacket lost Hout Bay/ Rhodes Mem/ Constantia green belt/ Tokai green belt. Please phone Evelyne Doak 0768586896, thanks.
  5. I am not sure if there is already a thread for this event, if so, I apologise. This will be my first Ironman 70.3 as well as my first Triathlon, Training has been going well and feeling ready. I have a few questions re the event and triathlons in general, any help will be greatly appreciated: 1. Are trisuits necessary or is it possible/advised to just run in your cycle shorts and shirt? 2. If Wetsuits, on the day, aren't compulsory, is it still advisable to wear one? will it help with speed or tamper with it? I have now forgotten my other questions! will post later when i remember! Thanks in advance
  6. I've always been a mountain biker, and that is easy as bikes are sized like underpants in S, M, L etc. But after hurting like a little bitch on the Argus this year I am going to buy a secondhand road bike for next year and also do some milage over the festive season. BUT I have no idea what sizing I need, it's all in cm and whilst I am sure I can drop the seat or raise it etc, I'd prefer to get as close to possible to the "right" size. I am 1,92m tall and from the floor to my crotch is 900mm. I prefer not being stretched out too much, (doubt will really use the drop bar part except in crazy descents. Any advice is appreciated.

  8. An open letter to all drivers, especially truck drivers. We as cyclists are mothers, fathers, brothers, sister, children and most importantly; humans. If you see us, doing our own thing on the road, please pass widely. Even if we are near the yellow line. I don't care if you have been angered be some idiot on a bike on a previous occasion. Ignore your childish voice to; to your amusement, see how near you can pass us. You see, the only difference between shooting someone and a hit and run is the method. You are still a murderer. And if we do survive, we run the risk of being paralyzed or having severe brain damage. Now tell me how you'd feel if that were to happen to you, your spouse or your child. It is not a game to see how many times you can pass closely to us. It is not a game to see how much you can anger us. You are playing with another persons life. I urge you to pay attention to the road, I know how quickly an accident can happen. There is no going back and no sorry will change what happened. As taken, exactly from the website https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/cycling/cyclist-road-rules-and-safety : "Drivers are required to give a minimum of one metre when passing a cyclist where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less or 1.5 metres where the speed limit is over 60 km/h. Scan the road for cyclists. Look for cyclists when turning or entering an intersection and give way as you would for any other vehicle. Before opening your car door look behind and check blind spots for cyclists. Do not drive, stop or park in a bicycle lane, you can cross a bicycle lane to turn left, enter private property or park in a parking lane. Cyclists can legally ride two abreast - be patient as you approach and overtake only when safe. Give cyclists plenty of room - a minimum of one metre clearance when overtaking." You can also refer to the following websites for more information: http://www.bicyclecapetown.org/bike-law/rules-of-the-road/ http://www.pedalpower.org.za/news/new-traffic-laws-affect-cyclists/ Don't be the person responsible for taking another persons life. Be patient, share the road and let everyone arrive home safely. Kind regards, A human on two wheels.
  9. For one thing is sure. Getting a sponsorship in South Africa is hard. I've had a few people asking me why I'm not sponsored yet. My results in road races has mostly been in the top 4 under 23, and the results usually show my name up with sponsored riders. My simple answer is usually that I have no idea where to start. I've been doing countless research on what sponsors are looking for, but except for results, being a good sportsman/woman and media coverage, I have no idea what else. So I would like to pose a question to sponsors: What are you looking for in sponsoring an athlete and where does one begin. Kind regards, P.
  10. Talking GREAT HELMETS that (according to Dick) all does the same thing, I sweat heavy, like rivers dripping straight down the centre of my face. Being completely bald don't really help with the dissipation either. So ... question is this. I've got a Giro Aeon and definitely cannot keep sweat from running down my face. Even using a sweat band only provide temporary aid. Anyone have an opinion on which helmet (make and model or design) deals best with keeping sweat out of your face?
  11. Pinarello T-shirts up for grabs! Limited stock available, so don't delay to avoid disappointment.
  12. I can only think of a few races that do a full road closure, they seem to be the Mega size races to justify the closures: -947 Cycle Challenge -CTCT (Aka "Argus") -Amashova Am I missing any? Emperors Classic was a very nice race, although technically not a full road closure event but as close as one could get. The marshals were outstanding this year.
  13. Hi, anyone know where in/around Cape Town one can by quality men's triathlon suits and full body swimwear? thanks

  15. I thought this might be of interest to someone New tracking method adapted to all budgets. Both mobiles and bikes are an easy target for thieves. Fortunately, technology advances to help us and make life difficult for criminals. For the next generation mobiles you can download applications for tracking in case of theft or loss, for instance on iPhone you can useFind my iPhone, and if you have Android: Prey. Unfortunately these applications will not ensure you get your phone back, but you should install them because they provide another layer of security, making things more difficult to thieves. On bicycles locks are still being necessary, but I want to talk about a device that can be installed and provides a tracking service, but don’t say it aloud, we won’t give thieves any clues. What is it about? It’s about Trackr, A small and discreet device the size of a coin that is revolutionizing the market. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-4.jpg But… How does it work?Very easy! If you get to lose your keys, simply select “find device” and you’ll get the coordinates of the new location. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-maps.jpgWith Trackr you’ll be able to locate your device at any timeIn the following video you’ll be able to see it in action: How much is it going to cost me?You’re probably thinking that this device will be very expensive…. nope. How to buy it?That’s easy, you can buy it from the website. https://buy.thetrackr.co/gu/special-offers/09/?utm_source=1630&utm_medium=trackr-ZA&utm_term=28174285&utm_content=321&utm_campaign=GU&aff_id=1630&camp_id=10271&clk_id=28174285&sub_id=trackr-ZA UPDATENow you can get free shipping. 16. Durban - A mother and daughter were left bruised and battered after a crash on the M19 that, according to the pair and witnesses, was caused by a reckless cyclist who, along with his team, “just rode off” afterwards. The safety of cyclists on our roads has been a hot topic, but it appears the roles were reversed in this instance. Sajheeda Ahmid, 53, and her daughter, 29-year-old Suyhayfa Arbee, had been driving on the M19 off-ramp, near Mountbatten Drive, Reservoir Hills, when the incident happened at lunch time on Monday. “We were in the extreme left lane,” Ahmid said. “A cyclist passed me, then I looked to see if it was clear on my side, and the next thing I knew he was cycling into my lane.” The audibly shaken woman said if she had hit the brakes, the car behind her would have smashed into her. Instead she swerved to avoid the cyclist. The car skidded across the freeway and “somersaulted”, and eventually landed in a nearby ditch, coming to rest on its side. The cyclist and his two teammates did stop, Ahmid said, but only briefly. “Then they cycled off.” Ahmid and Arbee were still in hospital on Thursday morning. “My daughter sprained her arm and has been suffering with stomach and head pains and I have whiplash in my arm and neck,” Ahmid said. Yusuf Moolla, who witnessed the crash, said the pair were lucky they were not killed. Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, confirmed the incident. “A motorist allegedly lost control of her vehicle and crashed on the M19 highway. The driver and the passenger were taken to hospital,” he said. Sydenham police were investigating the incident. Earlier this year, the deaths of popular cyclists, Richard da Silva, 46, of Glen Anil, and Jaryd Dwyer, 36, of Glenwood, outraged the cycling community. Da Silva and Dwyer were out on an early morning ride when they were killed in a crash on the M4. And three years ago, world-renowned cyclist Burry Stander was struck by a vehicle on the South Coast while cycling. After this year’s incident, the head of events, safety and security of Cycling SA, Craig Proctor-Parker, told the Daily News that the eThekwini Municipality needed to meet sports governing bodies to find ways to improve the safety of all athletes. He said runners and cyclists were also soft targets for criminals and this needed to be addressed before the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Daily News

  18. Hi all, I was informed of this over the weekend, and was wondering if anyone has done one of these multi-sport events (running, kayak, cycling)? http://www.kineticgear.co.za/Events/Multisport-Challenge If so, please give some feedback about these events. Are these organised properly? Safety in general at these events? I see on the website that they advise that rain/lightning/thunder won't stop the event from going on. There is one coming up in October that I am interested in, but would like to hear some more from people who have done them. Thanks Kev
