  1. Hi I'm looking to buy a new bike and have narrowed it down to two bikes: The merida big nine XT edition and the merida big nine 1000 light. The XT edition is 900 rand more, but has a better shock on. So the question from my side is: Would you buy the XT which is a bit heavier, but has better specs and shock, or the 1000, which has lower specs and shock, but has a lighter frame. The specs of the two bikes are below: Merida big nine XT edition: Specifications Size [15]-17-19-21-23" Frame Big Nine TFS-D Single Color1 black(silver/white) Fork 32 Float 29 CTD O/C- Evolution 100 Taper Derailleur Front Shimano Deore XT Derailleur Rear Shimano Deore XT Shifter Shimano Deore XT -3 / -10 Brake Lever attached Brake Shimano M505 180/180 mm Chainwheel Shimano Deore XT 42-32-24 Bbset attached Chain KMC X10 10s Hub Shimano XT Rim Big Nine Pro D Freewheel Shimano CS-HG62-10 11-36 Tire Maxxis Crossmark 29er 2.1 fold Handlebar Merida Pro OS Flat, 660 mm Handlebar Stem Merida Pro K OS, -17° Headset FSA BB-410 Seat Post Merida Pro K SB0, 27.2 mm Saddle Selle Italia X1 Pedal Shimano M505 Merida big nine 1000 light: COLORS silk black, grey, yellow FRAME SIZES 15"17"19"21"23" FRAME NAME Big.Nine Lite BC-D-Single R12 FORK Manitou Marvel Comp 29 TS Air 100 taper DERAILLEUR FRONT Shimano SLX HD triple DERAILLEUR REAR Shimano Deore XT Shadow SHIFTER FRONT Shimano SLX ispec SHIFTER REAR Shimano SLX ispec BRAKE LEVER attached BRAKE FRONT Shimano M615 180 mm Disc BRAKE REAR Shimano M615 160 mm Disc CHAINWHEEL Shimano M622 40-30-22 CHAINGUARD no BBSET attached CHAIN KMC X10 10s HUB FRONT attached HUB REAR 12 mm Thru axle RIM Mavic CrossRide Disc 29 FQR-R12 FREEWHEEL Shimano CS-HG-10 11-36 TIRES Maxxis CrossMark 29er 2.1 fold / Maxxis CrossMark 29er 2.1 fold HANDLEBAR STEM Merida Pro K OS -16°AD HANDLEBAR Merida Pro OS 680 Flat HEADSET Big Conoid A-Bearing SEAT POST Merida Pro H SB0 27.2 mm SADDLE ProLogo Kappa Evo PEDAL XC Alloy WEIGHT 11.90 kg

  3. Wanted to go soft tail, again.. All the steel in me due to falls is asking for a softer ride.... So got a decent Merida frame off B.Fontana here on the Hub.. Chucked the Suntour rear shock, Redid the paint work..tidied her up.. stripped my hardtail, and added a Fox Rp23 to the mix.. Cleaned and checked all bits and then added them to the frame,, Two and a half hours later and I have a decent soft tail..just have to get a rear detailed cable sheath... As the hard tails is not covered.. Now to break her in on the weekend...

  9. Hi again fellow bikers. I posted a topic last week where I listed 4 bikes that seems to be good value bikes for my budget. (Ghost, GT, Merida and Titan) The list was shortened whereby I now am between two bikes... Again, like my previous topic, as a newbie, I am not clued up on components etc.. The two bikes that stands out for me, based on feedback from other riders are: - Merida TFS 300 Big Nine - Momsen AL 229 I am being told that the shock and components on the Momsen is better, but I also need to know if the frame is decent etc.. Is there someone who own or owned these bikes that can let me know which is better? I am new to the sport and want my first bike to last a while before upgrades. I will be the typical weekend cruiser withy the family.. Thanks for your time and advice..

  11. Looking at spending 50k on the special that Cycle Lab are punting. Struggling to find reviews on the bike online. A 28k saving seems - at face value - massive! Is it a good buy, or too good to be true? Any thoughts?
  12. Thank you for great and friendly service on Saturday. You made the shopping for a new bike experience easy and pleasant. My list of demands were high and you met each and every one of them. The Teacher is very happy with the Merida, and the setup seems perfect, she can’t stop smiling. Always a pleasure dealing with Rodney, will be back, thanks!

  14. Hi All, My bike was stolen on 11 April in the evening at century city. It was locked with 2 locks, to my husband's bike and the rack. They left my husbands bike unlocked and took mine. CCTV footage shows 4 black males, heading in the direction of Kensington. The bike is 26 inch mountain bike - Merida, silver in colour with a white 'fizik' techno-gel saddle. The shocks have a remote lockout mounted on the left hand side of the handlebar and the frame size is 16 inch, small, I think. Police and Zonewatch (private security company with CCTV in the area) have been very helpful. Please help me to look out for it! Thanks! Gwen
  15. Hi All, Can anybody shed some light on the above mentioned carbon frame, wrt build quality, material (whether composite or not), weaving, and personal experience? There isn't a lot of information on the web regarding this frame, and where there is, it specifically says COMP on the frame, where the one I am looking at does not. Hope some hubbers have some experience with it. This frame was available here in SA at some point tx
  16. I've been riding for going on 8 yrs right now. I've serviced my bike at many different shops, but most recently I've been using Linden Cycles. Their services have always been great and I can't really complain. Normally when I query things, they are happy to fix it without question and the quality of their workmanship has been fine. They are however a bit out of the way for me AND with them being SO popular, you sometimes need to book like 14 days in advance. This is a bit of a problem if you just quickly want some running repairs done. I then decided to try a shop up the road from me - CycloWorx (Petervale Shopping centre). I was pretty surprised with their approach and it goes a little something like this (sounds I need a soundtrack here): - They don't have a flat rate for a service, they simply charge you PER ITEM that they do. - They also don't carry out ANY WORK until you've given them the go ahead on each item. - They FIRST quote and await your approval. This approach is pretty cool as I have in the past been in a situation where a 500 service turns into a 2000 service, granted we do discuss it, but I don't get a line by line quote before work is completed. I get a brief phone call where I need to make a call there and then without being able to digest it. In any event, I'm picking up the bike today and doing a training ride this arvy. Will reply to this post with how the bike is going (hope it doesn't fall apart, rofl).
  17. Any know what the diameter of the stem is on a merida road bike ? I know its 31.8 handle bars , not sure what the diamtere for the clamp on fork is?
  18. Good morning BB is ES25 OCTALINK What is the correct length for this bike . ( SORA CRANK ) many thanks
  19. Looking at the heading now it probably does not make sense, but i need to know. Talking about 29er Hard-tail only here. Love the look of the Merida Niner 1000 and it has good components and is fairly lite. Rocky mountain, a more plain looking bike but built quality i think is better and with just as good components on. I do more XC and search for technical single tracks when i ride. Price for both is roughly the same Which one is best to go if say i want to buy for a stage race like W2W ? Comments / Advise please ?? Thanks
  20. Does anybody know what the seatpost diameter is for the Merida 909 Scultura (2007)?
  21. Does anyone know if the merida one forty range is available locally? Read some good reviews on the bike but cant find any local content. Looks like a good option when paired against the giant trance 2. Any feedback will be appreciated.
  22. Hubsters, This is my first post for my first bike in a looooooooong time, like in years. Your input (for and against) is welcome. I am looking at the Merida Big 9 TFS 1000. Why Merida? Well, because I like it, simple as that. Reading through all the posts it seems like a never ending maze of opinions etc. Now, I am not completely dof, so would like to compare to other makes in the similar class. The bike is on sale at Chris Willemse for R14,999-00. So, will you buy it or go for soemthing else that has more bang for buck, keeping resale value in mind. The GT Zaskar also caught my eye. Thanks
  23. Received this via email today. "Cycle Factory Shop is excited to offer all of our loyal subscribers BIG SAVINGS on all our Merida bikes! 25. Help me choose please, I have 2 bikes on my shortlist, Merida Big 9 lite 1000 - R 13495 Scott Scale 960 - R 11699 Merida already has tubeless tyres on so add R 1000 to Scott price. Scott has remote shock lockout. Salesman reckons the Merida is better specced with much better wheels??? Merida has Manitou shock, till now all I have heard about is Suntour, Rockshox and Fox (never really in my proce range anyway.) Manitou is new to me and I heard that it must be serviced in CT even though another thread has a guy in JHB who does it??? I reallly like the look of the Merida personally. What do you think? Thanks
