  1. Hi guys, I have a friend who is doing the Argus this Sunday on a mountain bike. Will it be beneficial to change the tyres to slicks? Thanks!
  2. Hello all, I want to buy my first MTB shoe pair. My knowledge on MTB shoes is very weak and would like some recommendations from you guys who went through a couple of shoes. Okay, so my budget is R1000 (still need to get clipless pedals too). Currently looking at getting this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/dmt-borealis-mtb-carbon-italy-shoes/rp-prod150006 To be honest, I only went for this due to the words 'Carbon' and secondly the price. Is carbon shoes any good? Or should I go for other material? Also noted that it does not come with cleats. Will any cleats fit that specific shoe? Overall on what I do: I like doing ride (40km) over the weekend and will be doing the Karoo2Coast next year. If this is necessary, I am a very light rider. Any advice will be appreciated. ~ André
  3. Hi, I have an entry spot available for the joberg2c - http://joberg2c.co.za/ - 21st - 29th April Entries for the race are full, so do get in touch if you're interested. Cheers
  4. Hey guys, Here's the deal: I want to know how much you would pay for this 2011 Rocky Mountain Element 30msl. Let's say the condition is very good (see ad pics). Throw a figure out, or provide a range: highest and lowest amount depending on whatever your criteria are. The ad has everything you need to know. 26" lovers and haters are ALL WELCOME. Throw the offer on the ground or press it tightly to your bosom and sing sweet songs of longing. Thanks for your input.
  5. Hi All, Did my intro at the introduction section I'm a complete beginner to cycling and am looking to get a MTB to start off with. I am 1.78m tall and am doing this to get into shape and have some fun on the off road trails. Might possibly just use it also as a road bicycle just to get the fitness in during the week. Budget at the moment is R3000 Any advice on the bike to look at?
  6. Hi all, So I got given (indefinitely ) my brother in law's virtually brand new TACX Flow indoor trainer which I'd like to use with my MTB. He also has a MTB so he purchased the 28 inch wheel which is needed and it worked perfectly for him. When I tried to hook it up, I realised that it dosen't fit as it was causing the brake disc to touch my bike's frame when I tightened up the quick release. My LBS said that it won't work as my bike has the following: Roval Control SL 29 142+, DT Swiss Star Ratchet, XX1 driver body, 12mm thru-axle, 28h and that I would need to buy a new hub and have it put into the trainer wheel. This is what the trainer has:http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/tacx_zpsrycxqlbd.jpg and what my bike has: http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/DT_Swiss_12_x_142mm_Rear_Qr_zpsuf3wdwf3.jpg Question is: Do I need to get a whole new hub or is there a conversion kit of sorts available? I saw these on CWC- would they perhaps work? (Thru-axle adapter for x12mm (rear wheel) with cylindrical support for fixing the MTB´s with Taxc trainers) http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/P-TRAINER%20ACCESSORIES-TRAIAC-TACX-T1709-----_1_zps14wd9hjy.jpg Link: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/tacx-trainer-adapter-x-12-axle Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  7. I'm relatively new to this website but I'm finding it more and more frustrating when searching the "complete bikes" category under MTB. Advertised bikes seem to sort of spew randomly across the first 5 or 6 pages, making it very difficult to just see anything new that's come in (and not been gratuitously bumped up above other, often more reasonable items). I get that money has to come from somewhere but sheez, trying to work through classifieds often amounts to simply refreshing the page to see the same ads over and over again. What can I do to make my browsing more enjoyable, or does anyone feel the same way?

  9. After about 15 years of singlespeeding I’ve finally got a bike with gears again. I bought it second-hand, and it looks like the chain and/or cassette are worn and will need to be replaced. It’s a 2×9 setup, and that suits me, so I’ll probably just get a 9-speed XT cassette and a couple of chains. Seems to be the best value for money option, and the gear range suits me. (I think it was probably a 3×9 originally, but the big ring has been replaced with a bash ring.) But, for the future, will I be able to just pop on a 10-speed cassette instead? (Assuming I change the derailleur and shifter too, obviously.) Or is the freewheel body spacing or spline pattern different? The hub is a Sun Ringlé − not sure which model. I’m trying to catch up on 15 years of tech development as quickly as I can − clutch derailleurs, NW chainrings, boost spacing… it’s an exciting and confusing new world! And expensive − I remember why I went singlespeed in the first place, especially with all this chain slip, bad shifting, etc. None of that with my fat BMX chains, even with really worn chainrings. Also, I assume that SRAM 9-speed is compatible with Shimano 9-speed, 10-speed with 10-speed, etc? I have SRAM X9 shifters, X0 rear derailleur, and Shimano XT front derailleur, but the Shimano chain and cassette options seem to be easier to get here and good value for money, particularly in the 9-speed range.
  10. Hello everyone For about four years now I've been telling myself I want to get into mountain biking. I've tried it a few times with rented bikes and absolutely loved it. So I'm looking at buying myself a bike. Problem is, I know almost nothing about bikes. I've been to a few shops and been offered entry level bikes ranging from R4000 to R10,000. I don't want to get ripped off but I also don't want to buy a terrible bike that won't last long. I'm a 25 year old male, weighting 95kg and 1.89m tall. What type of bike should I get? Any brands you can recommend and where to buy them? Thanks very much for your time.
  11. Do you lubricate a MTB rear derailleur and with what lubricant and how often?
  12. I am starting this thread to get some interest going regarding the mountain bike routes around Franschhoek. I have been facilitating a team of trail builders during the past 4 months. Work was mostly focused on clearing and repairing old forestry roads, but some new sections and links have also been built. We will launch the trails by the end of January once they are all marked and mapped, but in the mean time you are welcome to contact me to come and ride the routes as planned. This will also probably be the last chance to ride these mountains for free as a permit system will be necessary in future to ensure the sustainability of the project. Here are links to some GoPro footage taken recently: https://youtu.be/rhmVaZLK1x0 and https://youtu.be/oymc52ViYfo
  13. Hi there - quite new to the addictive MTB sport and looking at a decent entry level bike for around 5-6k. I have seen some decent well specced Titan Sports, Giant Revels and Axis A60's, but having difficulty on choosing. Is there a sort of ranking sheet i can refer to, lol? I am about 1.74m , weighing around 90kgs and looking for something smooth, strong and fast. I dont intend becoming an avid trail rider, but possibly looking at the light trails now and then. will propably do more Beach, recreational pavement riding. in addition, what do you reckon is my frame size? i would think medium based on the chart sizing guides. What are your thoughts?
  14. I am about to purchase the Merida Ninety Six 6000 dual suspension bike, here is the full spec: http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/cross-country-marathon/2017/ninety-six-6000-6360.html This bike retails for R47000, but with some discount, I can get it for R36000. Is this worth it?

  16. Hey Guys So I have an old Specialized MTB helmet that fits great and is going to be used for road use (for now). I want to start doing Enduro events here in the Western Cape and would like a helmet with more coverage. I tried on a Bell Stoker (my heads 59cm) in a Medium very strange fit compared to my helmet I have now and a Giro was very narrow i found. Cant find a Bell Super 2r Mips anywhere in CT to try on and have read the forum about stockists not thinking they would sell here. Does anyone here have one? Medium is 55-59cm and large 58-62cm. (Im 59cm) Would want a medium could always pay to post it back and swap online but trying to avoid that. Think Large will be like a fish bowl and don't like that top heavy sort of look. Would be great if I could try them on but cant. If anyone has one let me know how the MIPS ones fit? Maybe a similar style bell here in CT i could try for size? OR should I rather go for a helmet here I can try on? Have not done any Enduro events not sure if guys just all wear XC/ALL Mountain type helmets and not full face anyways. Reason I would like the full face is some added protection (even if not DHrated) as i start getting better and practicing more advanced routes.
  17. Hi Guys I am looking into doing a proper bike service and setup course (MTB & Road), does anyone know of a reputable place or bike shop that host these ... google give a few, but i don’t know it they are worth it. Thanks

  20. Just came across this and wondered if anyone has pulled the trigger on the One Up 50T rear sprocket and what they thought of it, what the best use would be and what an ideal trail front ring would be. I run a 30 front with a 40 (might be a 42) rear and that does find for most things. It just looks so weird and massive. Not sure if it's available locally. http://int.oneupcomponents.com/products/50t-shark-sprocket-18t-1x11 http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0573/2837/products/OneUp-Components-50T-Shark-Sprocket-Green-Front-Assembled-M700-Evil-Following-966_grande.jpeg?v=1458233146
  21. So having taken road cycling a bit more seriously recently and having purchased a road bike I have come across a mental block/problem. I cannot seem to get comfortable with speed on my road bike compared to my mtb. I am quite comfortable doing 60km/h down a track, but come to doing the same on the road and my brain goes NOPE, and I slow down. To confuse the situation even more, if I hit the same road hill on my mtb I am more than happy to get the speed up and find myself pedaling my legs off trying to get more out the bike. Begs the question, why don't I trust my road bike?
  22. I visited my LBS yesterday, and the owner mentioned he could, if I traded in my current mtb, build me up a decent bike with decent components, carbon Trinity frame, 1x11 SRAM groupset, etc. I have never heard of, or seen a Trinity frame, apart from yesterday. I tried googling, but could not find any information. Have any of you heard of this brand before? Would you recommend it?

  24. For one thing is sure. Getting a sponsorship in South Africa is hard. I've had a few people asking me why I'm not sponsored yet. My results in road races has mostly been in the top 4 under 23, and the results usually show my name up with sponsored riders. My simple answer is usually that I have no idea where to start. I've been doing countless research on what sponsors are looking for, but except for results, being a good sportsman/woman and media coverage, I have no idea what else. So I would like to pose a question to sponsors: What are you looking for in sponsoring an athlete and where does one begin. Kind regards, P.
