  2. Hi, Im just another Noob trying to wrap my head buying my 1st duel suspension bike. I havent ridden off tar since I pointed my camo coloured avalanche 21sp down the wrong side of a non existant Rhodes Memorial track over 20 years ago... (ye, it didnt end well) Im older and wiser and "fuller" these days, and really want to get back out there. Im your average joe, have a mrs, 2 kids under 10, and the usual business commitments, so i'll be a weekend warrior to start out. Ive dug pretty deep into the google, learnt all sorts of new fancy words and terminology, some of them even about mountain biking Here's where im getting stuck. Say i have a budget of about 30-35k, I have some options in terms of new bikes, Silverback Sido, Giant Anthem, Scott 9 something, Trek, Cannondale, ect, and I do really like the look of most of those bikes, and from what I can gather I am looking at the entry level side of things, but there is also the option of some really nice 2nd hand bikes.. There really is a lot of choice out there, which makes it a difficult purchasing decision, because surely you actually have to have spent some time in the saddle to figure out what you like. Is there a case to be made for saying, ok, Im going to find whatever bike I can for 10-15k (second hand) spend some time with it, and then make a more informed decision when that time comes, taking into account I will probably have to/want to spend another 10-15k fixing/upgrading said second hander over the course of ownership, which takes you more or less back into the original budget bracket. Also, black friday is looming not to far away, and maybe there will be some crazy specials going on to compound the issue? I would really appreciate your thoughts and input on this life changing decision:) Thanks,
  3. There's apparently a mountain bike race happening this weekend (17/18 November 2018) at Meerendal - but there doesn't seem to be any mention of it on Bikehub ? Maybe my search skills on the incredible edible internet suck ? Is anyone here taking part in it ? Why is it called "invitational" (especially seeing as people can sign up for it) ? It looks like it'll go through the Dorstberg gate (!!!) at the end of the second day.
  4. Anyone know where shall I trade in my bike for a better new bike? Looking someplace in Pretoria. Your advise will be appreciate.
  5. Hi Guys, I am looking at buying a Schwinn Rocket ltd Dual Air suspension. Anyone got some experience with these? Regards, Stehan
  6. Hi Hubbers, Does anyone know who the current supplier or retailer is for Northwave. Shoes / socks /apparel ect. Any bike shops that stock their products and is there a demand for Northwave in South Africa? Your thoughts?
  7. Good Morning Hubbers! I have a pair of Greg Minnaar Hellcat Pro Clipless shoes. (Those pimp white ones) I am getting a pair of Flat Pedals delivered in this week, and want to try and make the switch and see how I manage without being planted to the bike permanently. I am in need of some "Cleat Plate Covers" like these ones: http://forums.mtbr.com/attachments/apparel-protection/1069549d1462961488t-five-ten-hellcat-plate-ciovers-801901.jpg http://forums.mtbr.com/attachments/apparel-protection/1069550d1462961562t-five-ten-hellcat-plate-ciovers-bottom.jpg It would be mighty fine if I could find some of these original ones to purchase online somewhere. Alternative option is to make some myself out of Pratley Frogs Eggs (Hand Mould-able Plastic) But I would follow up on any leads to get these originals. Cheers, Burgermeester \M/
  8. Whats is the difference in Sintered vs Organic pads Which are you guys running, I do a lot of trail riding? I have metallic pads in but the keep glazing the rotor and then I have to clean and sand the pads and rotor again

I took a quick ride on it and it feels really nice (Upgrade from my current Silverback Stride 20) Is it a good upgrade? Also dont want to be paying more than they are worth. 10. Hi guys/girls Calculus bikes are a South African handmade titanium frame company and I am a brand ambassador for them. I got my new frame from them a few days before my race and rushed to finish the bike build...I was worried that I would be uncomfortable on the bike because the bike was not setup and just roughly setup. I was wrong it was the best ride i’ve ever had on a bike as these frames are built for you according to your body and I can say that this is realy a massive + for the company. So the frame is what we al realy want to know about...the finish on the frame looks amazing and the fact that the name and logos aren’t paint or decals but are lazed edged into the frame, the raw ti look makes it even more of a winner. The overall quality of the frame is just amazing the feel and I think it is probably the litest ti dual sus frame on the market. The rear triangle is what realy lets the bike stand out. It only has on pivot and that is at the shock the bottom is a titanium flex blade and that takes out the “bob” you usualy get when riding a dual sus. So if you are a fan of unique bikes and like S.A companies then you should absolutely check them out.
  11. Hi all, Bought this Kona Nunu - its still original, some cleaning up to do fitted new tyres and checked the crank. the shocks are in need of a service. What are your views here? keep it in tact for the collector or make a single speed beast.
  12. I have a mate whose son wants to start MTBing, they do it as a sport at his school, Spur series etc. So he needs to buy a MTB and has no clue as he is not a cyclist. He has a budget of about 10K, kid is still growing but about 1,8m tall. Any suggestions of which bike - 650B - 29er ? size ? where are the best deals at the moment ? I suggested 29er hardtail Large size Any opinions ?
  13. Without starting this thread sounding like an offshore oil rig worker trying to sell his cousin's bike, I'll get right to the point: I need to decide what set of brakes to get for my MTB next. Background: I am built for going more downhill than up - around 100kg. My bike is a 150mm/130mm travel black mongrel weighing more than 14kg. I like the more technical stuff and not averse to my bike's tyres leaving contact with Mother Earth on occasion. I currently run Shimano XT M8000's on a 203mm front and 180mm rear rotor which give me reasonable stopping power but lacks modulation and brute force when it is really needed, and I feel holding me back a little in terms of confidence to push the boundaries a bit more. The shortlist at the moment contains: TRP Quadiem's Hope Tech3 E4's Formula Cura's and possibly TRP slate I'm not a big fan of SRAM brakes due to previous bad experiences therefore I won't consider these as an option for now. At the end of the day I'll need to way up performance, reliability, ease of getting spares, backup and repairs but also value for money, as there is a significant difference in price between some of the options on my list. I am not asking any of you to choose for me, but would appreciate if anybody with proper experience with any of the listed brake sets above to impart some of it to educate my eventual leap. Greatly appreciated!
  14. Hey Guys, So i started a thread on here a week ago and that led me to deciding to upgrade my current 2016 Trance 2 instead of getting another bike. Currently wanting to replace the stock fox 32 ctd 140mm fork with a 160mm. Cant seem to find one down here but the new Fox 36 Performance Elite 160mm 27.5 Grip 2 or I have seen and read reviews on the MRP Ribbon. Do any of you ride one of the above or have any input? I was going to go with a cheaper fork but instead of putting cash into a new bike I'm going to get a higher end fork and then in a few years I can upgrade to a newer frame if need be and move the new fork over. Thanks in advance
  15. And ended up with a floor full of parts that looked like this: Build went quite smoothly at around 3 hours. And ridden about 75km on it so far in the past week. Lots of playing around still to do on suspension, but finally when I get a break from work and travel will take some proper pics of it. Key takeaways: I dont like Eagle. It's my first non-Shimano bike. Shifter ergonomics modelled on Zuma's economics policies I'm sure. Those who say it feels like a 650b, are spot on. Much nicer than other 29er's I tried.I fitted the tyres on the rims and pumped them up to pop with a hand pump. Only thing to still do is to tidy up the brake hose lengths and bleed. More pics on weekend.
  16. My doc put me on a 5 day course of Amoxycillin 500 mgs 3x a day, started on Thurs evening. Had a sore throat, swollen glands in neck and a cough. Today I am feeling well I'd say a 100% well. But I still have 4 more AB's left to take. After doing some googling I see these AB's aren't the type of AB's that would put me at greater risk for tendon damage. But I'm worried of possible heart strain. Basically I am trying to decide whether to go do a +-20km MTB ride this evening and whether I can resume gymming tomorrow or whether I should wait until Wednesday when I will have finished the course of AB's. Input would be appreciated. If there's a thread I missed on the subject mod's can merge it.
  17. Howzit I started MTBing in December and I have been riding a lot since then. This is my bike, I got it when I started last year: It's a 2018 GT Avalanche 29er I picked up at Sportsmans for R9k. I recently (a week ago) added a dropper post (Lyne Countour) and did a tubeless conversion and new tyres - Maxxis Ikon rear and Maxxis aggressor front. These upgrades have made a big diff (duh).
  18. Hi all, what are some of the lightest mtb rims available locally that are not carbon? looking at upgrading my current rims only but don't want to go carbon. 29er, modern widths for XC / stage races. Currently have the std rims that come with a 2018 scott spark 940. Not sure what they are or weigh because if i google the code on the rims it doesn't appear to match anything so I don't know the current weight Thanks D edit: photo attached
  19. I don't normaly create topics, and have a primary post focus for technical input. And stay away from the yif yaf discussions. However I feel compelled to give a huge shutout / Rave / plug whatever it is refereed as, to Lyne Components. I am by no means affiliated to them in any way but just appreciate their commitment, excellent service and products. I currently use their dropper posts, AMP wheel-sets, bars and stems, and in my opinion the products exceed performance, style and bang for buck in today's trends and market. Their service by far exceeds expectations from sales to returns and more... Yes, I have returned a dropper before for some issues. Not so much a return as a no questions asked overnight door to door swap for a new unit.... Dayle even went to extra lengths, sourcing not for sale spare pits for a personal faux pas on a dropper post. Leading the way in service delivery....Thank you! So big up's to them!
  20. Looking for outsole lugs for a Specialized MTB shoe 2016 model as per pic attached. Size EUR 43. Freewheel cycology don't have my size because they apparently not making them anymore. Olympic cycles I suspect called them and simply cannot assist. It looks like I have to call on the hubbers for #assistance.
  21. I'm 42 and started riding again , buying myself a hardtail Scott Aspect 940 after several years of taking a break . This was Oct 2017 . Unfortunately i had a minor lower back injury and had to go for a discectomy in Feb 2018 . The specialist and fisio recommended a Dual Suspension when riding again . I'm interested in the Silverback Sido 3 for myself and the Sola 3 for my wife . Can anyone recommend them and are there any other options to choose from that i'm missing . Your inputs please .
  22. Where is the best places to go mtb riding around Bloemfontein. Looking for a route 20-30km, good elevation and technical mix if possible? I found only 7 dams but it's a mission getting in there to go ride. So very willing to drive out upto 20km for a decent ride. Thx
  23. Looking for things to do with the kids over the long weekend? Visit the new Bike Park at Hazendal, with a pump track, skills trail, y-bike track, flow trail and 5km cross-country trail there is something for everyone, even Mum! The kids will love you for it - it may just end up as their favourite place to be! 24. Completely new to cycling, so want to start out with a lower budget bike (don't want to invest too much in case I lose interest). Max budget is R7500. Are any of the options below decent, or would it better to go the second hand route?
