  2. So, I like this cycling thing quite a bit. With the GP Road Race Champs just up the road from me yesterday I decided to make the effort to go attend. We pitched at 15h00, thinking we will see some serious excitement as this would be right towards the business end of the various races. Firstly, the attendance seemed very sad, just a couple of Gazebo's strewn along Soutpansbergweg for families supporting their husbands, fathers, mothers, sisters etc taking part. I have since just finally accepted that cycling is not a spectator sport, at least not for people physically attending events, even on a short course setup as we had yesterday. You see the cyclists for 10s every lap, with no idea what has transpired on the rest of the lap. I had no idea which riders were in the race and where they were placed. We left after standing around for about 30mins. Somebody needs to seriously consider something new to get non-cyclists excited about these events. Mount some Go-Pros on the Race Commissionaire cars and have someone narrating the action from the car as the race unfolds. Stream all of this to Youtube and people might actually know what is going on out there. This morning, I have not been able to find out what happened in terms of results. I found Reinardt JvR on Strava and see in his description that he finished 3rd. Other than that, nothing. And then on another tangent, can somebody please explain the whole structure of the Provincial champs and how they feed into nationals? Someone like Nicholas Dlamini and Darryl Impey who currently sits in Aus, do they get a free pass to nationals etc?
  3. Hi all I want to upgrade my bike from mech to hydraulic brakes. My budget is limited to about R1500. Which brakes should I buy? I’m not too concerned about ease of installation. I just want reliability and serviceability to be hassle free. I’ve looked at brakes such as Tektro and Shimano mt200, but I don’t know where to buy them. Thank you
  4. ON AVERAGE, WHAT DO YOU SPEND ON: Cycling Jersey Bib short Im doing some market research on cycling apparel, the reason for this is, I love riding with nice fitting & high quality gear, but these do come at a price. I just received a order from a major brand and to be honest, it was disappointing because i paid a premium for this item and expected great quality from them, so i want to see if there is a price range that my fellow cyclists are willing to pay for epic quality, a realistic price point. Im on a mission to see if a solution is possible to make great quality gear accessible to most riders.
  5. Morning. I am from the W.Cape, but spending time in PTA nowadays. Looking for some primarily gravel routes which start as close to Brooklyn as possible. Have been riding in Magaliesberg(roads around v Gaalens recently graded btw) which has been fun. Routes don't have to be all flat dirt and can be a combo of surfaces. Many thanks.
  6. Wolwespruit Bike Park is opening in Pretoria East on the weekend of 5th and 6th July 2014. The park is next to the N1, between Rigel ave / Lois ave, the entrance is next to Kloof hospital (Jochemus street) and safe parking will be provided. The area has been fenced off and secured by security guards. The park will have close to 15km of well marked mountain bike specific trails, catering for riders with intermediate to advanced skill and fitness levels. There will also be trail running routes and more routes will be added regularly over the next few months. The area has some proper elevation, and will offer some good training in a safe environment, as well as a few technical challenges and obstacles! See the website for details: www.wolwespruit.co.za Facebook and Twitter links will be up soon, follow us to keep updated!
  7. Good Morning Guys, I have a bike with old Avid Juicy Seven brakes. I was considering buying a bleed kit, but I figured it will just save me time and effort to have the LBS do it for me real quick since I lack the experience to do it efficiently. Have you guys got any suggestions in the Menlo Park / Brooklyn area or relatively close-by for mechanics who could do this for me quick and cheap? Cheers \M/
  8. Hi all I'm new to cycling in general and live in Moregloed (Waverley area). I would like to know if anyone knows of nice and quiet road cycling routes in the Pretoria area? Thank you in advance!

  10. Read some previous threads which were a bit old and vague. I am new to Centurion and am looking for road cycling routes that I can ride without being murdered, mauled, mugged, trampled, trucked or any of the other uncomfortable things I've been told about road cycling in Gauteng. Specifically looking for a bread and butter 50km loop and also something as long as possible. Any particularly nasty climbs that I could check out? At the moment I'm doing Supersport Park > Botha Ln > Fonteine Circle > Klapperkop and back. Which is great, but need some more help if anyone knows some cool loops. Anything longer that goes through Pta will be awesome, but I'm sometimes out in normal-person hours , and have seen places like Botha Ln get very hairy when traffic picks up. Lastly, where do most other elites do their group rides? I'm looking for the fastest possible company if possible. Thanks so much for the help! Look forward to the sugestions

  12. Quick Background Since the age of 6 I have always been on my bike, mostly MTB. I recently acquired my first Road bike for use in Triathlons/Duathlons (The MTB with slicks worked fine, but I quickly realised I am at a definite disadvantage) So..., I have been out for a couple of rides on the road but I realise you are much more vulnerable, because on a MTB you could easily take evasive action to the gravel if things get hairy, no such luxury on a road bike. I assume some of the group rides on weekends have support vehicles that tend to keep things relatively safe. My main requirement is to be as safe as possible on the road, have a wife and 5-month old at home that I need to keep in mind. Cradle is obviously the safest setup in GP, but I commute 100km every day of the week, don't really want to do it over weekends as well if I can avoid it. Main point I am looking to join a group ride in PTA East over weekends. I will definitely look to join a club in future, but have no idea where to start looking. We live in Erasmuskloof, so finding a group that starts close to home would be ideal, but it is not really make or break to be around the corner. Question: Are there group rides in Pta East where I can just pitch without being an actual club member? Where are the starting points located? Which of these would be the safest if you look at their route/support etc? Appreciate any feedback Thanks guys & gals
  13. Good day! I am a total beginner mountain bike rider, and I was wondering if there is any other beginner MTB ladies who would be interested in riding with me? I also want some advice on routes to do around Pretoria? I am located in Monument Park. Thank you in advance!

  15. The iconic Union Buildings set the stage for the first Engen Cycle in the City festival-style criterium held in Pretoria on Saturday. Hundreds of colourful cyclists took to the streets in an array of race categories that drew participants from all walks of life; ranging from the competitive street kings and queens to the "just for fun" minions and the fixie flat-box fundis. 16. Pretoria Croup Rides I had some success personally in another thread meeting some riders in the Pretoria area to go Mountain Biking with. Therefore I'd like to start a new thread for Pretoria MTB riders to post their needs for riding partners. Weather it be Morning Rides, Night Rides, Weekend Rides post it here together with some of your requirements use the list belof as guidance. 1. Starting area 2. Staring time 3. Intended route description. 4. Riding distance 5. Pace 6. Also state if you are in it for fun or if you want to do serious training Mountain biking takes us to places we rarely get to see otherwise and sometimes to remote places where there is nobody around. Mountain Biking is also more enjoyable with others. Riding in numbers ensures safety, you learn new routes and areas and you may even pick up some skills. Post your next ride in this thread and ask someone to join. Always have fun no matter what!!!
  17. I really want to do this but i'm looking for a few partners in crime On Sunday 20th July 2014, join thousands of women around the world to ride 100km. A global event, ride on your own or join an organised ride. Rides will be taking place everywhere, including several led by Rapha. Over 4,000 women took part in 2013 — this year we’re aiming to double that number. Its a STRAVA challenge as well Anyone else keen?
  18. Hi I am looking for people to ride with in Pretoria, especially the east. During the week I usually start 04:30 or 05:00 and ride 2 hours or 1.5 hours until 06:30. Weekends I usually try to ride for 4 or 5 hours on Saturday or Sunday. Weekends I try to be adventurous in the routes I ride and during the week I stick to the road and it is all for training. I cycle on a Mountain Bike and on the road I try to maintain 25km/h. Alex
  19. I recently noticed some mountain biker riding around inside the CSIR Pretoria grounds. That started me wondering if there are any MTB routes / trails inside the grounds or are they following the same loop as the road cyclists. Is anybody out there that can shead some light on the matter?
  20. Hi Guys We are thinking of moving to Pretoria/Centurion and I'm concerned about my cycling. Can anyone suggest a good club and/or some nice routes in the area?
