  4. Anyone doing this event this weekend? http://www.cycleevents.co.za/road-events/bell-of-hope-cycle-challenge-for-mental-wellness-2016/
  5. Hey Everyone, So the usual I'm sure.. which one to purchase. Background: I'm 28, 78kg. Started out cycling again not so long ago. Previously iv ridden BMX when i was in way younger, then road for a year or so on an old Trek budget MTB. Recently started doing a bit of road, cycle track (gravel) and jeep tracks off road routes. Nothing downhill/single track yet but would like something capable of handling some easier single tracks and off-road routes too. I did own a Scott full suspension bike a few years ago but was sold it thinking a could ride a bit on road to gym and also hit trails, it felt incredibly slow and the suspension sucked up pretty much all the power going forward. (Probably also due to incorrect settings and so on). What i'm looking for: I need a bike that I can put some sort of slick tires on. Im using 26x1.50 cheap ones for my old Trek now for on-road and they make a massive difference compared to the stock MTB ones. I would like to do the Argus (for the first time) next year (wont be racing against the clock) but have mates doing it too that are looking at cheap road bikes, perhaps something that can keep up. I have read lots over the years and do realize the differences in angles and components, being more upright, gearing and so on. I don't expect to stay with them the entire way but the more capable the better. Not sure if I should be looking at 29er's or 650B's. I really like the components and everything I have read when it comes to the Silverback 15 Sola 1 (R23,394). Giant XTC Advanced (R20,750) but read that the above Sola 1 would be better? with better components. Trek Superfly 9.6 Carbon (R24.500) 27.5/29 Scott Scale 950 (R21,900) I'm thinking the Trek or Silverback one being Carbon the other not. Both Rockshox Reba RL front suspension. Silverback mostly Shimano XT/SLX Trek Deore XT Sram7. The XC / Cross Country bikes I think would suit me better than trail for what I'm looking for and Hardtail seems to be a good option for my price range (the extra saved on rear suspension going towards frame wheels and components) I plan on running off road tires tubeless eventually and getting a spare set of wheels and slicks for on road use. I would like advice on any other bikes in that range and on wheel sizes 27.5/29. Also on gearing for road use, Don't want to do any serious mods besides wheels and tires. Thanks very much Sean

  7. 2018 Stage Race Calendar: All the racing for 2015 is written in the history books. Take a look at our 2018 Stage Race Calendar. South Africa is undoubtedly the best place in the world to be if you live for marathon mountain biking stage races. The number of stage races you can ride is mind-boggling. To help you navigate the 2015 stage race calendar, we've compiled a list of all the mountain bike stage races taking place in South Africa (and surrounds) this year. Click here to view the article
  8. Ive been working on cycling events for quite a while and have noticed a common letdown for participants, the quality of race/event packs - the gear and gadgets that they receive. Multistage race events offer a larger more expensive selection of gear and gifts in general but is it what cyclists really want or need. What would you put in and be realistic Look forward to some ideas and hopefully the guys can look at this and keep up to date what we all really want.
  9. So I'm saving up for a new set of wheels and I'm looking at the American Classic 29er wheels as I've heard great things about them. I ride XC/ Marathon and I'm not competeing for a podium but I do push for my best possible time. I weigh around 62kg and I want the wheels to last and be really solid as I don't the money to have them trued every second month. I'm looking at either the American Classic Wide Lightning or American Classic Race, so which isit worth the extra for the Race and are they as strong?

  12. Good day, So I have entered the 2015 Amashova cycle challenge. Unfortunately I cannot go alone due to financial difficulties. So, what I need is a travel partner. I do not pay for patrol or toll gates, so that is covered. I basically need some one that will help with "padkos" and accommodation. I will go down on the Saturday and come back on the Monday. I can tow a bike tailor if needed, but also have a bike rack that can take 3 bikes. The arrangements for the accommodation will be the responsibility of whoever decides to be riding shotgun. Please let me know if your are interested in tagging along. thanks
  13. Saturday 25th, I was privalaged enough to ride one of the best Mountain Bike Races to date. The Burgersfort "Wildevy MTB" takes a relatively flat course and turns it into a pleasure park ride of note! A well laid out mix of jeep and single track have made this race a 50, 20 or 10 km pump track (depending on what you ride). So despite the fact that there are no major climbs pushing your heart rate up, you are constantly out of the saddle to keep your bike in the zone. Well done to Driekie and Pieter Heyns, and thier team for a well organised race with an awesome country feel. For those of you looking for great race http://www.wildevymtb.co.za
  14. Attention singlespeeders! The Gravel Travel is fast approaching and I would love to know who has entered the Wilde Gravel Travel Singlespeed category. 60 kms with 1600m of climbing so it should be a tough day in the saddle. https://www.facebook.com/WildeGravelTravel

  18. Hi Everyone, as you know the Cape Argus Cycle race is this Sunday, and the BiBi Rouge Cycling Team will be using this opportunity to raise money for our two charities. To do this, the lovely men in our team have volunteered to be sponsored to ride the whole 106km race in pink Tutu's! To sponsor one or more of the men, you can go to the below link and choose your amount (you can sponsor them R1 or R2 per kilometer the ride or anything between R50 and R1000) and it will then allow you to pay with a credit card or EFT though a secure site where your details will not be shared or stored. Alternatively you can email us on cycleteam@sabrinakennedy.co.za for EFT details. These guys need motivation to look fabulous for the biggest cycle race in SA, so we appreciate any donation! http://www.sabrinakennedy.co.za/online-store.php#!/BiBi-Rouge-Charity-Cycle-Team-Sponsorship/p/47878940/category=12453602 The two charities we sponsor are the Lunchbox fund- giving Children in Townships a School lunch every day, and The South African Animal Welfare, specifically to aid dog fighting in townships. Please share this so that your friends and family can help too! THANKS!

  21. Barberton, a small historical town bordering Swaziland, yet only a mere 4 hour drive from Johannesburg to this tranquil destination. The Barberton Rotary Club launched the Barberton Mountain Bike Classic 19 years ago, which makes it one of the oldest and first official mountain bike races in the country. This tradition will continue with the next Barberton XCM MTB Challenge taking place on 31 January 2015. Pre-entries are open and you can enter at www.cycleevents.co.za or www.barbertonxcm.co.za Barberton is known for the Barberton daisy, the first stock exchange of the world, and the newly launched Geotrail which is a very interesting route that explains the over 3.5 billion year old rocks – believed to be the oldest in the world. Don’t let the beauty of Barberton fool you! The Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge is not as delicate as a daisy! Following the feedback we received from some of the cyclists the decision was made to amend some of the routes and to add an additional route. The race boosts 5 different categories; · The “very delicate” 20km Fun ride · The “delicate” 30km Half marathon · The “not so delicate” 48km half marathon · The “not so delicate” 77km Full marathon and · The “not so delicate” 110km Ultra marathon The Barberton XCM route is one of the toughest in the country and rubs shoulders with races such as the Cape Epic and even the “Le Tour de France”. The Ultra Marathon cyclists will peak their 110km route at just under 1,800m above sea-level, whilst the 20km fun ride cyclists will peak at just under 700m above sea-level. All races will start and end at the Barberton High School sports fields. With a festival-like atmosphere, there is much for the fans and supporters to do whilst waiting for the cyclists to return from their thrilling adventure ride. This incredibly scenic route takes you up the Makhonjwa Mountains with majestic views over the De Kaap Valley, through nature reserves, dams and very close to the Swaziland border. According to Nic Eksteen, President of the Barberton Rotary Club, this race is the perfect opportunity for cyclists to test their fitness and skill. Eksteen is very excited about the changes to the current routes which include single tracks, guaranteed to make the race more exciting and challenging. For more information regarding the routes and profiles, the Rotary, stalls, sponsorships, accommodation in town and tourist attractions, please visit www.barbertonxcm.co.za. 23. Hey guys, I am farely still a newbie in MTB'ing. My furthest distance cycled so far is 34km in 2:31:30. I am currently managing 8km a morning (this is all the time I can muster at the moment, trying to squeeze in some more where I can) and my average speed is floating at around 18-19km/h. What I want to know, and I know I am still far from this goal, is what do I need to aim for to know that I am ready to start tackling stage races (my eventual goal is to do the Jo'burg to Sea). How should look at training and what benchmark do I need to aim for (average speed wise, 100km a day, etc). Your valued advice would be greatly welcome. Regards, Jan.
  24. Hi guys, I am considering to do the Bela Bela Triathlon this year. I have done triathlons in my youth (15 years ago) and now I want to relive the thrill. Has anyone of you completed this race? Any tips? Also - since I just can't get myself off of my "new" single speed road bike.. Would this be considered a good idea to take this bike of mine to the event? I am really not interested in winning, it is more of a personal challenge. The only other bike I have is a MTB so it is either the single speed or the MTB on slicks. Any hints would be appreciated. (Already vowed to sign up for the 2014 94.7 on this specific single speed) Eish. Kind regards, G
