  1. I am looking at upgrading my road bike at some stage...watching the classified everyday just to get an idea of what is out there for sale...was going to buy a new bike...but the exchange rate is too high...and the cost to upgrade the wheels just throws it out the price range. weight 105 kg (dropping slowly...but would prefer to stick with a bike and wheel set that can carry the weight) height 1.8m ( according to the giant size chart i fall in the m-l bracket. seat height on all my other bikes - 759 mm the trek 1000 i ride at the moment is a 58...really old...setup changed the stem to an 80 mm with 420 handlebars...my right arm is 110 mm shorter than my left arm so my reach is slightly restricted. 9 speed and told it is a donkey... as i am told every time i want to purchase any bike new...i must upgrade the wheels...so the way i see it getting a second bike with decent wheels which can carry my weight would be a no brainer bargain. this is what i have learnt since i started shopping around...(R20k price range will grow the longer it takes to find a good deal. been thinking a 56 would be the right size and a 54 a little on the small size. 105 or better 10 speed wheel set i still dont know as i havent done enough research...would have to take my weight into consideration...some advice required. I use the bike to do a lot of short rides which include plenty hills...the amashova...will be doing the argus etc etc. i am not in a rush to upgrade...
  2. Hi All. So I am in the market for a new road bike, and willing to spend up to R30k max. What would you recommend and why ? Something that's suited for climbing and needs to be comfortable on longer rides of about 100km. So far I have only looked at Silverback, the Space and Sirelli range, but open to any suggestions. I know the second hand market has a lot on offer but prefer buying new when spending that kinda cash. thanks in advance Vivek
  3. Hi guys. Proud to announce that I am new to the forum, and that I have committed myself to one crazy idea: I want to ride the Momentum 94.7 on a single speed bike. I decided this after I recently bought a SS project bike, weighing in at only a few kilo's. Rides like a dream, and even wheelies spontaneously. So I decided that the 94.7 is a challenge I set myself, and that I would like to do those tough km's for myself, and a charity. I need some advice on this topic though - if any of you guys have done it before, or know of people who will be riding fixed gear or single speeds in 2014 Momentum 94.7 - please share your thoughts. Any charities that need some extra support are also welcome to be presented here so that I can consider them! Thank you in advance, Gus
  4. As some of you will have seen in the insurance thread, some idiot hit me while I was out on the road bike. On the up side, only superficial injuries to me, and insurance wrote the bike off (and have already paid me out), so now it is time to start bike shopping. The bike I was riding was a Raleigh RC7000 with a carbon fork and full Ultegra. The frame said it was an XL, which I believe translates to 58cm. The million dollar question is, what to buy now. I'm not worried about the new vs second hand debate, if I can get a good deal I'm happy to look at it. I have obviously been browsing the classifieds and there are a few options (ok, it is almost every single bike with a frame in a 58). In no particular order: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/134974-new-2014-fondriest-rp3-12-alu-58cm/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/126988-used-2013-matrix-judy-carbon-ips-11speed-58cm/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/153161-specialized-secteur-2014-58cm-x-large/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/153038-ghost-ebs-race-58cm/ https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/153031-leggera-carbon/ Maybe I have been living under a rock, but I've never heard of Leggera before, but a quick Google search tells me, "Leggera Group is an international company which offers design, manufacturing and distribution of bicycles and metal fireplaces." - bikes and fireplaces seems like a rather strange combination... Fondreist, Matrix, and the aforementioned Leggera are not names you hear every day. How easy would it be to get something resolved if you needed something from them? Do any of them have a local presence of some kind? I have also heard from somebody I trust that he knows a third party selling a S-Works Venge in a similar price bracket but I'll only get the details on that bike tomorrow. (I am aware that if this is in good condition that it would be the best bang for my buck) Is there actually anything new under R20,000 that is worth looking at? I can't say I have any brand loyalty so that is not a factor.
  5. Giant first entered the aero road bike game in 2013 with the launch of their Propel Advanced SL. Tests showed that, at 40 kph, the Propel Advanced SL saves 12-36 seconds over 40 kilometres. Third-party wind-tunnel tests showed that the Propel Advanced SL is more aerodynamic from every yaw angle tested when compared to other leading aero road bikes. Click here to view the article
  6. Hi All. I am looking at changing my bikes from an Aero frame to something more comfortable as I am doing longer rides and the Aero is starting to feel too hard on my body. I have been looking at the Silverback Sirelli 2 which looks like great value for money but as I am not too clued up with specs can someone share their knowledge and let me know if this is a good buy for +/- R35k ? If not, what else can you suggest in this price range. 7. I currently ride MTB but I'm looking for a cheap(ish) road bike to take part in some road events and use it for road training during the week when I can't get to a trail. I'll most likely do Argus, 94.7 and a couple of other sub 100km races, but mostly for fun. So I don't need anything top of the line, but want something that is at least somewhat competitive (ie. not slower than my full sus mtb). I'm 1.86cm and 78kg with a 88cm inseam. So as far as I know this puts me on a 58cm frame. My budget is around R16k. I've looked at the following bikes that are around that price point: Scott Speedster 20 - http://www.hotspotcycles.co.za/product/2015-scott-speedster-20/Merida Scultura 400 - http://www.hotspotcycles.co.za/product/2015-merida-scultura-400/Cannondale: Synapse Alloy 5 105 - http://www.bicycling.co.za/bike-buyers-guide/synapse-alloy-5-105-3/Cannondale: CAAD 10 5 105 - http://www.bicycling.co.za/bike-buyers-guide/caad-10-5-105-3/ Any others I should be looking at or any of the above I should rather exclude? I've checked the classifieds for Gauteng area but I'm not really seeing anything in that range. Any help / tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
  8. Hi Guys, Need some advise. My wife and I have been cycling for about 18 months. We are not serious cyclists and time in the saddle is limited due to work and family responsibilities (Kids). We do mostly spinning during the week and try and do 1 or two mount-bike events a month. We entered the Argus this year and have to admit were a bit relieved when the distance was reduced but also a bit disappointed. During our training we cycled a few popular training routes (between Somerset west and Stellenbosch and up towards Franschoek ) and couldn't help noticing how much faster the road bikes seem to be going than the MTB. OK I admit we are green when it comes to cycling but it just seems so much easier. Now 2 questions: 1. Would it be worth while investing in a road bike for next year Argus ( and a few built up race ). 2. What would be a good value road bike for me and my wife - considering our level of experience. I just want to make things easier. I hate swaarkry! Thanks
  9. Hi there, I currently have a Bianchi VIA Nirone 7 Alu bicycle. Firstly where about would be the best, or perhaps someone can inform me here on The HUB SA about the price of this frame i can expect to get 2nd hand? (obviously depending on the condition). I am wanting to upgrade and use my Campag components on a carbon frame im wanting to buy. Thanx for your help. Thurstan
  10. I am looking for cyclists who are willing to partake in research done as part of my Physiotherapy Masters Thesis. We are investigating the possible difference in asymmety between cyclists with knee pain and cyclists without knee pain. Ethical approval is in place. Testing will take place at the FNB motion analysis lab at the Stellenbosch Tygerberg Campus Criteria: Knee pain on the inside of the knee that started spontaneously (no trauma, no history of crusiate ligament damage or meniscus tear)pain to such an extend that it limits training and performancepain present during some activities eg. stair climbing, after long sitting, during cycling, during squattingaged between 23 and 45spending at least 5 hours a week on your road bikeno traumatic injury or operation to the lower back or lower limbs. If you are interested please send an email to erikabrand@gmail.com so that I can send the questionnaire through to you.
  11. My bike was stolen from my garage on Saturday morning in Heldervue, Somerset West. The garage lock was forced open and the bike was taken. It is a Chinese carbon frame with a mix of Ultegra and Dura-Ace components. White Specialize Toupe Saddle Garmin edge 500 was on still on the handlebar (1TK084375) Handlebar tape is now red and not blue as in the photo
  12. Hi Guys Help would be much appreciated. Whenever I down shift from the big ring to the small ring it tends to fall off. It happens on the flats and will definitely happen when climbing. It's rather annoying as I have to down shift when I'm going downhill in order for the chain to not slip off. Any ideas how to stop this from happening? I've seen a gadget call a 'chain catcher', will this help? Ps. I've taken my bike to my lbs multiple times and they always say the gears need adjusting, which they say they've always done but it seems like it's just getting worse. My groupset is Ultegra 9 Speed. Standard 54/39 chain rings
  13. Hi Hubbers I have been commuting for years now, started commuting to Wits from Crosby/Brixton. Now I commute to work which is in Forest Town. I use to use my MTB but now with work clothes I feel my MTB is not suitable anymore so I started using my road bike which is an old Trek 1000. I am thinking of transforming this bike into an urban/commuter bike. I know enough about bikes to do some of the changes, but I am looking for some advice. This is what I am thinking of doing: Change handlebars to a flat-bar (those really narrow ones)Change brake and gear levers (I want to keep my gears, I need them )Change tyres to cyclocross or something with more grip, but keep my road bike rims - possible? Chain cover - save my work pants from awesome grease marksSeat, something that suits the bike more. That's about it. Has anyone done something like this? I want to spend minimal so keep that in mind.
  14. Looking to borrow or rent a road bike for the Double Century from as soon as possible. I'm a MTB rider but have an entry for the event. Anybody have any good contacts for a road bike???
  15. -25.781703, 28.335188 Pretoria Solomon Mahlangu Drive 16|08|2014 at approximately 11:00a We drove past this tragic scene this past weekend with nothing in the local media!?? Does anybody know what happened here?
  16. So I'm looking to do something a bit unconventional. I'd like to borrow somebody's road bike for on long term agreement, for at most about 9 months until and including the PnP Argus Cycle Tour in March next year Basically, the idea is that I'm not at the point of purchasing my own road bike at the moment. I mainly ride my mountain bike, but can't justify a purchase for such limited use as I intend at this stage. I intend to ride the Die Burger, The PnP Argus and a couple of weekend rides. I figure there are lots of blokes out there who have a road bike gathering dust in the garage, which deserve to be put to good use. Compensation will of course be discussed, and may be a portion of the bike's value. I am willing to provide relevant documentation to allay fears, and sign some sort of agreement on the terms. I am 1.85, 6 ft 1, longish inseam. Generally ride a Large, on the border of XL. So I think I'm looking for a 56cm bike, or 58cm with shorter stem. I'm not going to get picky on the type of bike, sportive or full on race. Let me know if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions. Or of course if you have the bike I'm looking for Please, no nastiness.
