  1. To kickstart this thread, here are the official bits relating to this year's Road World Champs ) 2016. First a picture of the current Road World Champs, in case you forgot: Elite Men - Peter Sagan Elite Woman - Lizzie Armitstead..... The qualification process - how do nations get the number of riders to the start line. Download the file (or click the link above) Systèmedequalification2016-ENG-Final_English.pdf The cut-off date for qualification is 22 August, which is around the corner - hence the information being posted so soon. South Africa is currently ranked 20th (mens) and 12th (ladies), but only the top 10 nations get preferential qualification. The rest have to follow alternative means of qualification. Louis (Maincheese) is currently ranked 46th, so the SA men get to send three riders. Ashleigh (Moolman-Pasio) is currently ranked 9th, so we also (should) get three riders.Assuming I have read, and understood, the qualification process listed in the file above, and summarised below: 3. Qualification through the Individual UCI World Ranking Each nation which has not otherwise qualified, which has its top-ranked rider: - among the first 100 positions in the individual UCI World Ranking on 22 August 2016: each nation may enter 3 riders to start. 2. Hi Guys I am looking into doing a proper bike service and setup course (MTB & Road), does anyone know of a reputable place or bike shop that host these ... google give a few, but i don’t know it they are worth it. Thanks
  3. Dear Fellow Hubsters, Unfortunately I won't be able to participate in the 94.7 this Sunday due to kidney stones. The buggers showed up without warning this past Saturday, resulting in a visit to the hospital and naturally, my withdrawal from the 94.7 cycle challenge. Is there anyone who would like to enter but missed the cut-off date/time? My entry is available for purchase. It cost me R650 for my late entry, but will cost you an additional R150 for a substitute ride. Taking this into consideration - I will accept offers from R500 to assist you. Please comment or contact me on 084-549-6526 if interested. First come, first serve. Regards, Jonty
  4. Hi Guys, I'm a MTB guy, but doing a lot of road lately and want to add a road bike into the mix. Budget would be around R10k for now, can I get anything good for that price, considering 2nd hand, and what would be the best spec I can get in that price range? Also, what are the main factors to look out for when buying 2nd hand, any risks involved in guys trying their luck? Your help would be great, Thanks,
  5. Hi, I'm from the Netherlands and moved to Johannesburg last year. I started to miss the cycling I used to do in the Netherlands and therefore decided recently to move my bike as well. Are their any groups I could join to get used to cycling in South Africa? I'm looking to do a ride in the weekend (2-3 hours) and one during the week (1-2 hours). Hope someone can help out
  6. So having taken road cycling a bit more seriously recently and having purchased a road bike I have come across a mental block/problem. I cannot seem to get comfortable with speed on my road bike compared to my mtb. I am quite comfortable doing 60km/h down a track, but come to doing the same on the road and my brain goes NOPE, and I slow down. To confuse the situation even more, if I hit the same road hill on my mtb I am more than happy to get the speed up and find myself pedaling my legs off trying to get more out the bike. Begs the question, why don't I trust my road bike?
  7. I've noticed a few themes developing in forum threads about the lack of road events and how PPA is dropping the ball. Don't bash the PPA here. It's pointless. As a member driven organisation it is run by a 12 person executive committee elected by the members at the AGM on a 2 year cycle, 6 members are replaced every year. Joseph de Maistre said of democracy that every nation gets the government it deserves. And this is true of the PPA. At the last AGM a staunchly pro road riding list of candidates, drawn from the local road clubs and others with credibility in promoting road riding and racing in the Western Cape, appeared on the ballot for election to the committee. Not one of the pro road candidates was voted in while the mountain bike sympathetic candidates all got voted on or returned. I was one of the casualties, as was Lance Burger who had served on the committee for many years and was instrumental in the court case against CSA about sanctioning on fun rides. It is the right of members to choose who they want to represent them. I respect that. Of 15,000 members less than 200 can be bothered to spend 3 hours at the AGM. As Joseph de Maistre said, you get what you deserve. But if you don't go to the AGM and vote for the candidates that will represent your needs then please don't come to the hub and bash the PPA for doing what those members who turn up and vote want the PPA to do. Stand as a candidate or vote and make a difference. Or stop the bashing. Full disclosure: I was forced to resign as a member of the PPA and am no longer eligible to be a committee member. While a committee member I was instrumental in locating and purchasing the offices the PPA now occupies, a task that had been on the agenda for a number of years prior to me being elected. I was also the chairman of the safe cycling committee that launched the stay wider campaign on a national basis using celebrities like the late Gugu Zulu, DJ Fresh, Joel Stransky, DJ Suga and Anne Siroky. We sold thousands of stay wider shirts and had a presence at every major road race nationally. Edit: Removed the facts that may be construed as "sour grapes" to avoid issue of voting being clouded. Edit: Made title more relevant.
  8. An open letter to all drivers, especially truck drivers. We as cyclists are mothers, fathers, brothers, sister, children and most importantly; humans. If you see us, doing our own thing on the road, please pass widely. Even if we are near the yellow line. I don't care if you have been angered be some idiot on a bike on a previous occasion. Ignore your childish voice to; to your amusement, see how near you can pass us. You see, the only difference between shooting someone and a hit and run is the method. You are still a murderer. And if we do survive, we run the risk of being paralyzed or having severe brain damage. Now tell me how you'd feel if that were to happen to you, your spouse or your child. It is not a game to see how many times you can pass closely to us. It is not a game to see how much you can anger us. You are playing with another persons life. I urge you to pay attention to the road, I know how quickly an accident can happen. There is no going back and no sorry will change what happened. As taken, exactly from the website https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/cycling/cyclist-road-rules-and-safety : "Drivers are required to give a minimum of one metre when passing a cyclist where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less or 1.5 metres where the speed limit is over 60 km/h. Scan the road for cyclists. Look for cyclists when turning or entering an intersection and give way as you would for any other vehicle. Before opening your car door look behind and check blind spots for cyclists. Do not drive, stop or park in a bicycle lane, you can cross a bicycle lane to turn left, enter private property or park in a parking lane. Cyclists can legally ride two abreast - be patient as you approach and overtake only when safe. Give cyclists plenty of room - a minimum of one metre clearance when overtaking." You can also refer to the following websites for more information: http://www.bicyclecapetown.org/bike-law/rules-of-the-road/ http://www.pedalpower.org.za/news/new-traffic-laws-affect-cyclists/ Don't be the person responsible for taking another persons life. Be patient, share the road and let everyone arrive home safely. Kind regards, A human on two wheels.
  9. Hi hub land, Just picked up this little ride for my boy but want to get some road drops made for it and then repaint it. Going to try bogus but no idea for mini road bar.. Any clue?? Just looking to get a bar bent into road bar shape...
  10. For one thing is sure. Getting a sponsorship in South Africa is hard. I've had a few people asking me why I'm not sponsored yet. My results in road races has mostly been in the top 4 under 23, and the results usually show my name up with sponsored riders. My simple answer is usually that I have no idea where to start. I've been doing countless research on what sponsors are looking for, but except for results, being a good sportsman/woman and media coverage, I have no idea what else. So I would like to pose a question to sponsors: What are you looking for in sponsoring an athlete and where does one begin. Kind regards, P.
  11. http://www.tririg.com/articles/2013_05_Skewer_Shootout/650/2013_05_Skewer_Shootout_2.jpg Hey guys, Anyone have any experience with bolt on skewers for road bike? They make sense from a security perspective and I always have my allen keys with me when i ride so it's not like the would leave me stranded or anything. I'm assuming that when you forgo the whole QR lever you save a bit of weight as well. Not one to advocate weight saving over safety, anyone have any opinions?
  12. I am looking at buying a new road bike to start off with. The guy at the bike shop I visited advised me that in terms of value for money, nothing will beat the Silverback Strela (the 2016 model looks spectacular I must say). Not even Giant or Merida will be as good according to him. Does anyone have experience with this bike and is it worth getting? It come with full Shimano equip, but just an 8-speed. Is this good enough to start off with?
  13. Hi Guys So there is a chance I will be going to Harties this weekend and wanted to ask how safe it is? The rides will be mainly road. Was thinking of doing a loop around the dam. thanks
  14. I can only think of a few races that do a full road closure, they seem to be the Mega size races to justify the closures: -947 Cycle Challenge -CTCT (Aka "Argus") -Amashova Am I missing any? Emperors Classic was a very nice race, although technically not a full road closure event but as close as one could get. The marshals were outstanding this year.

  16. This channel has really well shot, well narrated videos of some of the most iconic climbs in Europe and the states. Worth a watch, even if its just to remind you what makes cycling so great. https://www.youtube.com/user/TheColCollective One of my favorites:

  18. I thought this might be of interest to someone New tracking method adapted to all budgets. Both mobiles and bikes are an easy target for thieves. Fortunately, technology advances to help us and make life difficult for criminals. For the next generation mobiles you can download applications for tracking in case of theft or loss, for instance on iPhone you can useFind my iPhone, and if you have Android: Prey. Unfortunately these applications will not ensure you get your phone back, but you should install them because they provide another layer of security, making things more difficult to thieves. On bicycles locks are still being necessary, but I want to talk about a device that can be installed and provides a tracking service, but don’t say it aloud, we won’t give thieves any clues. What is it about? It’s about Trackr, A small and discreet device the size of a coin that is revolutionizing the market. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-4.jpg But… How does it work?Very easy! It will take less than five minutes to put it to work. You simply have to pair it with your mobile phone and download the free application which will allow you to locate at all times. Once this is done, you simply have to put it on your key chain, in your wallet or in any object you want to locate always. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-seat.jpg Now just have to open the application on your mobile and you can see on the map the position of your device. If you get to lose your keys, simply select “find device” and you’ll get the coordinates of the new location. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-maps.jpgWith Trackr you’ll be able to locate your device at any timeIn the following video you’ll be able to see it in action: How much is it going to cost me?You’re probably thinking that this device will be very expensive…. nope. This is the best part, you can acquire one for so little, the price is about £20. Not bad considering it givespeace of mind. How to buy it?That’s easy, you can buy it from the website. https://buy.thetrackr.co/gu/special-offers/09/?utm_source=1630&utm_medium=trackr-ZA&utm_term=28174285&utm_content=321&utm_campaign=GU&aff_id=1630&camp_id=10271&clk_id=28174285&sub_id=trackr-ZA UPDATENow you can get free shipping. With Trackr you can also track your personal belongings, just simply attach it to anything you consider important for you or easy to lose, you link it to your Smartphone (with the Trackr application) and you will find what you lost, it’s that easy! Detailed instructions on how to use TrackrNow that you are aware of the potential of this curious device, we will make a brief summary to clear all your doubts: Step 1: Get Trackr from this website, you’ll get it delivered to your home in about 1 week.Step 2: Link Trackr Bravo with your Smartphone (iPhone or Android) and place it next to the object you don’t want to lose.Step 3: Download the app and always have in hand the location of your valuables. As Simple As That!
  19. Hi there, I have a mountain bike that i use for training. However, I have recently entered a triathlon with a 90km cycle so I am looking for a Road/TT bike that I could hire for the event as well as use regularly (once a week) to get used to it? I've seen there are a few places in CT that offer for R300 a day but then I still need to get it to Stellenbosch so by the time I do the Triathlon I might as well have bought myself a new bike (the race is in September). Does anyone know a cheap place in Stellenbosch to rent a road bike, or is anyone themselves willing to lend/rent me their bike for two hours on a weekend to get some time in the saddle? Feel free to comment/PM Thanks! ps. I am quite tall (193cm) so a large or XL bike preferably
  20. Greetings everyone, As many now, I am involved in organising a race and lending some help with others. Each event has it's unique challenges and is almost impossible to please everyone all of the time. The idea is to please as many of the cyclists as often as one can. From the list (above), what is important to you as a cyclist - I've tried to split it between ROAD and MTB. Please don't compare to the BIG MTB events in the sticks that enjoy big, mountainous climbs - we don't have such luxuries in the urban centres. I'm trying to get an objective view of what people would like, compare it against what is possible, and then see how we can get other organisers to buy into the collective ideas to make as many races as possible satisfactory. You'll notice that the ROAD poll has an option called PERMANENT NUMBER. While I am still trying to get some officials and race organisers to buy in the PERMANENT NUMBER concept to ease the hassles related to number collection, this one is specific to the event I am associated with: Assume the permanent number concept doesn't take off, and the status quo remains as is, would you buy a permanent "cloth" number that can be used exclusively at our event for the years ahead (and maybe one or two others)?Feel free to add to the list and submit your comments, which I hope will help my efforts to bring about improvements in cycling (in our province and perhaps elsewhere too).
  21. Looking for morning or evening group rides in the week around the City Bow, Sea Point, Green Pointl or Observatory area. Medium pace. Maybe 1 to 1.5 hours - before or after work.
  22. Hey Everyone, So the usual I'm sure.. which one to purchase. Background: I'm 28, 78kg. Started out cycling again not so long ago. Previously iv ridden BMX when i was in way younger, then road for a year or so on an old Trek budget MTB. Recently started doing a bit of road, cycle track (gravel) and jeep tracks off road routes. Nothing downhill/single track yet but would like something capable of handling some easier single tracks and off-road routes too. I did own a Scott full suspension bike a few years ago but was sold it thinking a could ride a bit on road to gym and also hit trails, it felt incredibly slow and the suspension sucked up pretty much all the power going forward. (Probably also due to incorrect settings and so on). What i'm looking for: I need a bike that I can put some sort of slick tires on. Im using 26x1.50 cheap ones for my old Trek now for on-road and they make a massive difference compared to the stock MTB ones. I would like to do the Argus (for the first time) next year (wont be racing against the clock) but have mates doing it too that are looking at cheap road bikes, perhaps something that can keep up. I have read lots over the years and do realize the differences in angles and components, being more upright, gearing and so on. I don't expect to stay with them the entire way but the more capable the better. Not sure if I should be looking at 29er's or 650B's. I really like the components and everything I have read when it comes to the Silverback 15 Sola 1 (R23,394). Giant XTC Advanced (R20,750) but read that the above Sola 1 would be better? with better components. Trek Superfly 9.6 Carbon (R24.500) 27.5/29 Scott Scale 950 (R21,900) I'm thinking the Trek or Silverback one being Carbon the other not. Both Rockshox Reba RL front suspension. Silverback mostly Shimano XT/SLX Trek Deore XT Sram7. The XC / Cross Country bikes I think would suit me better than trail for what I'm looking for and Hardtail seems to be a good option for my price range (the extra saved on rear suspension going towards frame wheels and components) I plan on running off road tires tubeless eventually and getting a spare set of wheels and slicks for on road use. I would like advice on any other bikes in that range and on wheel sizes 27.5/29. Also on gearing for road use, Don't want to do any serious mods besides wheels and tires. Thanks very much Sean
  23. Hi all, So I became the new owner of a road bike over the weekend. I don't ride road bikes, but I couldn't accept that the bike was thrown out in the wind and rain, so I managed to acquire it without paying a cent. Even though it isn't the latest model, I feel the bike can look like new with a bit of TLC. ( Trek 2300, mustard-yellow, a few scratches etc ) This is what I would like to know: - To save costs, would it be advised that I respray the bike myself? I don't like the yellow, and would change the colour if possible. - Do you get kits that can assist with respraying a bike? - Is it better to have decals painted on the bike, or is it better to get new stickers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kev
  24. Hey everyone Is anyone going to be in or around the Plett/Knysna area over Easter? I would love to join a riding bunch and explore some of the trails around the area. Please let me know. Happy Friday!
  25. Hello, I recently got a new road bike and took a Fizik antaras saddle with it. It is the most uncomfortable saddle ever and causes numbness down there. I've never had saddle problems and always think that the saddle will be ridden in and get better in time. Can I exchange a Fizik saddle or am I stuck with it. What saddles for road are comfy? Is the new Scoop saddles good? Thanks
