  1. Hello Guys I have made my return to the road cycling scene after about 6 years away, and boy has it changed!!!!! I use to be scared of bonking mid-ride, now I'm scared of getting stabbed for my bike, phone or even my powerade. Various cycle clubs have group rides on weekends, and that's great, but I was wondering if someone would be interested in doing n group ride in the mornings ( 3+ people ) on weekdays. I do have 2 other people who cycle with me, we average about 27km/h and do a loop that starts at Centurion golf estate down to eeufees using Botha Avenue and back to the golf estate, giving us about 30km.Obviously we could change the route to suit other riders as well. Maybe Mondays, Wednesday & Friday's or any 3 days in the week, leaving enough time to bash some km's on the weekend's. If anybody is interested please contact me, otherwise any ideas or tips would be appreciated, I honestly just want to ride my. Regards Bruere 082 330 9393 bruere@live.com
  2. I currently run Gatorskins on my road bike. With the 94.7 and then the Coronation DC coming up in November, I'm considering buying some tyres specifically for races. I'm no racing snake - I'm planning on a 3.15 94.7 and I run Campagnolo Zonda wheels on my Bianchi. The wheels are for clinchers. Questions: 1. Is there any value on considering going tubeless? I think the Zonda's can handle it. 2. Is it worth buying a race day set of tyres? 3. If yes to 2, which are best?
  3. Anyone else done this before? How well is the event usually organised? Is it an official seeding event for the momentum 2014 94.7 cycle challenge?
  4. Hi does anyone know of groups riding from pomona in the morning ? can be MTB or Road, iam moving there next month and my current riding groups start to far from pomona to cycle there do the ride and then cycle back, time is an issue.
  5. Hey Guys, I was at a friends house earlier, on palmyra road, just between the vet and mariendahl road (claremont), I took my bike in their drive-way, parked it at the end around the corner of the house, so not visible from the road, and it was stolen while I was in the house. (stolen between 1pm and 5pm) I don't think I have any pictures of it, but I know a lot detail... Here goes some of it: Blue Scott speedster S3 frame, it's massive, 61cm, and the seat was high (I'm 193cm or so). Black carbon DEDA fork Silver BBB seatpost Anodized blue vuelta airline road rims (rear wheel very out of true, recently had a pretty bad crash) with gatorskins tyres. 39/16 ratio, silver, shimano ultegra crankset, 8 spline BB (not hollowtech). old road clip-in pedals (the old popular look exus pedals) Red anodized alu straight bars, cut short. champagne corks as bar-ends, wrapped black suede leather grips (done myself, not the best job) Black brake levers (straight bar levers) Normal silver road caliper brakes The stem was a ritchey comp stem, I think. Also has a little orange "B" cut out of tape on the frame somewhere (under the down-tube, or behind the seat-tube, somewhere like that). Also took that with my helmet, a blue Bell "faction" helmet, which I'll post a stock photo of, it had some stickers on it (a big yellow thumbs-up and B-E-N in orange tape too), because my name is Ben... duh. If you guys see anything like this, anything similar, please phone/email/getahold of me ASAP, the bike was really comfortable for me, so I kinda want it back. 0787115873, benjamin.r.bingham@gmail.com.

  7. New radar device makes cycling safer August 6 2014 at 09:15am By Murray Williams Comment on this story http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/iol-mot-cycling-radar-1.1731165!/image/1781875817.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_300/1781875817.jpg Independent Newspapers Vulnerable position: Reporter Murray Williams negotiates the chaos of Malta Road between Salt River and Observatory. Picture: Henk Kruger. Cape Town - A revolutionary new bicycle safety device has been launched, which uses radar to warn cyclists about cars approaching from behind. Backtracker improves cyclists’ visibility and awareness of what’s happening behind them on the road. South African specialists in radar and computer-vision and cycling enthusiasts Ikubu have been creating prototypes for Backtracker since 2010. “We believe our device will bring much-needed confidence back to a sport too frequently compromised by fear of unaware motorists. Backtracker is a type of sixth sense that helps cyclists to see what they ordinarily cannot,” iKubu managing director Franz Struwig said. “Backtracker consists of two small, lightweight units which detect and interpret the speed and acceleration of rear-approaching vehicles at a distance of up to 140m,” he said. “The handlebar-mounted front unit indicates your potential safety risk using a simple peripheral vision range indicator. The intelligent backlight alerts motorists to your position via increasingly frequent light pulses.” Backtracker’s radar technology is particularly valuable when cycling in low-visibility conditions such as fog and rain, dusk and dawn. http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/copy-of-ca-p6-franz-struwig-done-1.1731166!/image/1012812187.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_300/1012812187.jpg Sixth sense: Radar expert Franz Struwig demonstrates the innovative, potentially lifesaving radar for bicycles. Picture: Murray Williams. Independent Newspapers “Also, it’s functionality is not affected by the proximity of other cyclists, which is useful when training in pelotons or on family cycling excursions,” Struwig said. The Cape Argus visited the company with Ernst van Dyk, winner of multiple Paralympics and World Championship medals and major international marathons, including a record 10 wheelchair-racing titles at the prestigious Boston Marathon. Van Dyk happily endorsed the life-saving product, testing it on the back of his racing wheelchair. Struwig said: “The idea for Backtracker was born through a chance meeting with an elderly cyclist, who had resorted to riding in the face of oncoming traffic, for fear of motorists behind him. It inspired us to create a safety product that could bring confidence back into every ride.” From there, the idea started taking shape through many hours of discussion and preliminary sketches, followed by a hand-built prototype which put the thinking to the test. High- frequency antennas were developed several months later before a more refined second prototype was built. This was, then miniaturised to ensure the components were as lightweight and small as possible, making it ideal for even serious cyclists. Safety-conscious road cyclists will be able to order the device via Dragon Innovation, a platform that has helped to launch other crowd-funded success stories such as the Pebble smartwatch and Hammerhead navigation system. Backtracker’s success relies on about 1000 supporters financially backing the product before it can make it past prototyping and on to handlebars. The device will be available in variously priced packages, including an early-bird special of about R1590, while the standard Backtracker price will be around R2125. SAFETY TIPS FOR CYCLISTS - Use pedal cycle lanes where these are available. - Keep as close as possible to the left edge of the roadway. - Obey traffic signs and signals. - Ride with, not against traffic. - Watch out for car doors opening in your path. - Wear brightly coloured clothing in the daytime, and reflective clothing at night. - Fit and use effective front and rear lights when riding in hours of darkness and when visibility is limited. - Use hand signals when turning or changing lanes. - Be aware of hazardous road conditions. - Be aware of other road users, especially at intersections. - Ride in a straight line. - Wear a helmet that fits properly. - Never ride with headphones. FOR DRIVERS - Yield to cyclists, especially at intersections. - Leave a distance between the motor vehicle and the cyclist of at least 1m. - Check your blind spots and look before opening the car door. - Do not drive, stop or park in a bicycle lane. 15. I am converting a roadie frame into a single speed commuter. I have been been given a Shimano MTB crankset for free. But now I am confused as to which BB to put on the bike. Do I put on a MTB BB and the put the spacers on the frame side? Or do I put on a road BB to fit the frame and then put the spacers on the crank side (outside) of the BB? Have I made a boobie by having to choose a BB? PS: if anyone knows where I can get a set of FREE road brake callipers you would rock a lot!

  25. Road cyclists are turning their attention to the Msunduzi Road Challenge on 26 and 27 October because it lays on full road closure, guaranteeing their safety during the time trial and road races.
