  1. The months of February and March generally see a congested road racing calendar across the country. Many of you are busy training for these events, especially in preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With the increase in cyclists on the roads comes an increased risk of cyclists also being hit by a vehicle. Click here to view the article
  2. Quick Background Since the age of 6 I have always been on my bike, mostly MTB. I recently acquired my first Road bike for use in Triathlons/Duathlons (The MTB with slicks worked fine, but I quickly realised I am at a definite disadvantage) So..., I have been out for a couple of rides on the road but I realise you are much more vulnerable, because on a MTB you could easily take evasive action to the gravel if things get hairy, no such luxury on a road bike. I assume some of the group rides on weekends have support vehicles that tend to keep things relatively safe. My main requirement is to be as safe as possible on the road, have a wife and 5-month old at home that I need to keep in mind. Cradle is obviously the safest setup in GP, but I commute 100km every day of the week, don't really want to do it over weekends as well if I can avoid it. Main point I am looking to join a group ride in PTA East over weekends. I will definitely look to join a club in future, but have no idea where to start looking. We live in Erasmuskloof, so finding a group that starts close to home would be ideal, but it is not really make or break to be around the corner. Question: Are there group rides in Pta East where I can just pitch without being an actual club member? Where are the starting points located? Which of these would be the safest if you look at their route/support etc? Appreciate any feedback Thanks guys & gals
  3. Anyone know where in South Africa you can get a concealed carry sling bag? I found this one on Amazon but they don't ship to RSA: http://www.amazon.com/Kelty-Tactical-Sling-Right-Sky%5CGray/dp/B003WYMFNG
  4. Hello, my inner padding is in pieces on my Rudy Project helmet and now it's a huge search in finding a cycling store that supplies these things. I've been quoted R300 for them now, which I think is ridiculous. I can go buy a new helmet for R 950 on special now. Does anyone know a cycle store who sells these things for a reasonable price in the Western Cape.
  5. Hi guys, has anyone of you ever bought some child bike carrier? What do you suggest? what do you think of Thule Ride Along? I am planning to buy one, so I want to hear your opinions. Thanks a lot in advance.
  6. A colleague of mine just informed me she drove past a cycling accident on Tiekiedraai in Durbanville Hills yesterday on her drive home. Apparently the guy was lying in the road up against the barriers, looking pretty messed up. Does anyone have any details?
  7. Cycling in winter requires more than wearing extra thick and warm attire. It requires an extra amount of vigilance when you’re out on the road in order to keep safe. Click here to view the article
  8. Winter is the time of year when cycling becomes slightly more challenging as daylight hours diminish and the weather changes. When winter arrives, you might think that the bicycling season is over. But with a little knowledge and practice, winter riding can be highly rewarding, and commuting to work can be a significant timesaver as more people generally use their cars in winter and get stuck in peak hour traffic. 9. Hi, I'm going to Hazyview the long weekend and the wife and I is planning to do a couple of self-guided trails around Hazyview (Induna Adventures) and then some of the Sabie or Graskop trails. Do you guys know of any concerns regarding bike theft on any of these routes you know of? http://www.mtbroutes.co.za/sabie-mtb-trails-closest-citytown-sabie- Any suggestions will by highly appreciated. Thanks!
  10. Cycling South Africa regrets to announce that there was an attack on the visiting Danish MTB Team at Voortrekker Monument in Gauteng yesterday, while preparing for this weekend’s STIHL XCO Cup Series race. Click here to view the article
  11. Just an observation I've made, there aren't too many people who cycle early morning or evenings wearing reflective jackets or other items of visibility other than their front and rear lights. Firstly, is there a reason for this? Also, given that the largest part of a cyclist on a bike is the actual cyclist, would it not make sense for the cyclist to be most visible? The reason I ask is I am fairly new to cycling and wanted to understand if items like the two jackets below with LED's are considered taboo? or not practical for some reason? or just not readily available? With Winter fast approaching and most of my cycling to occur during darker periods I am hoping to understand what options are available to me or recommended to ensure I remain safe on the road. Not sure if I'm alone here or if others share the same thoughts or interests in items like the below?
  12. The Cape Town Cycle tour is going to be epic. I propose its epic because cyclists take a stand for road safety and awareness. We often ask how we can make a difference, well here is the proposition. The cycling community here on the Hub makes suggestions for a section on the route where we commit to lie down on the road in protest for 5 minutes. Its called a 'die in', and that is how the community in Copenhagen protested roads deaths and changed cycling in their city. Surely decision makers in the city would take notice of thousands of cyclists making their voice heard, and in a visual way such that they could not escape the images of the worlds largest timed cycling event demanding action. Yes, it is a race and for many riders a few minutes makes a big difference. Imagine if the front groups just lay down on the ground for a minute prior to the start. A powerful take on a minute of silence to remember those who have been killed. Lets discuss how the cycling community can use this event to peacefully and powerfully create a change. I cannot bear to go through another training season hearing of cyclists being killed on the roads. It could have been any one of us. We only have a few chances as powerful as this. Thoughts?
  13. PPA FB Post We have just heard that a young UCT cyclist was knocked down on Victoria Road, near the Ambassador Hotel in Bantry Bay at about 5.50 am this morning. The following report from a fellow cyclist tells the story: "Despite a bit of concussion he is okay, although his carbon bike had a snapped seat stay and seat tube and the car was a mess as he smashed the windscreen and rolled off the bonnet. Not cool and could have been so much worse if it were a bigger car or a truck. Before the speculation and motorist-bashing goes wild: The cyclist was 100% in the wrong here. It was dark and our usual crew of about 20-strong was traveling towards Camps Bay. A few others were riding to join us and traveling in the opposite direction (from Camps Bay towards town). As we drew level [with the second group], the cyclist made a sudden U-turn without looking behind him and collided with a car traveling in the same direction as him. Moral of the story: Think and don't be daft.” https://www.facebook.com/pedalpowerassociation?fref=nf
  14. To promote safer cycling for all those who use bicycles, the Safe Cycling Initiative from PPA has specifically targeted motorists through our new campaign. We have recruited high profile celebrities from a non cycling background to personalise and convey our message to all road users to stay wider of the rider. All we are asking for is to give us space and share the road with us. We have print adverts, radio spots, bumper stickers, awareness rides and the new lumo high visibility cycling shirt. Attached are some of personalities we are using. And the bumper sticker.
  15. Given the tragic lost of another fellow cyclist yesterday in Cape Town. I feel it necessary to raise a concern regarding the road works on Victoria road on both sides of the road from Campsbay to Suikerbossie and down Suiker bossie to Houtbay. This is our morning training route and in the past few weeks I've noted that this stretch is an accident waiting to happen... With road works markers forcing both cyclist and motorist on to the same piece of road without any shoulder for the cyclist. My question why would the powers that be decide that this is a opportune time to implement road works this time of year knowing the volume of cyclist that use this route for training pre Cycle Tour? I've noticed road signs on the timing of the road works (07:30 - 17:00 ) - 07:30 being the peak time for people returning from their morning ride. Is there anyway we can get Citi council or whoever is responsible for the road works to delay their times by an hour? This will allow for the peak cycling traffic to subside. Tired of all the tragic news circulating the Hub lately. Lets try stand together as a community and try make the roads safer for ourselves.
  16. Right so now i read in the Argus another cyclist has been mugged by knife and panga wielding rejects of the human race at Tokai forest. 3rd attack in thee weeks. We pay to get mugged seems like the norm these days. Yes this topic is out of rage and UTTER frustration. We have become far to complacent about matters like this. We defend our selves and we go to jail but they can go on the hunt and the police and Table mountain parks board are too useless to protect us, however ever so eager to take our hard earned money. Mugged twice in one day. These days i cycle with a 2 million volt tazer. Looks like a cell phone but the only ringing that will happen is in their heads when they wake up only to discover that the ringing in their ears are far less serious as their crushed hands and knees. Im not violent but i am a product of our ever so aggressive society. Most of you will say just dont cycle there cause its a hot spot, and i would say BS. 6 months to a year ago it was not. We have become targets. So if we stop riding there they will just target us somewhere else. When will it stop.? Tokai on the upper levels have become a danger zone. ride the lower levels. Again BS. why should i pay to ride but get restricted cause the "officials" cant, wont or are unable to help protect us. When you pay at the little pay office they have a sign board that reads " beware of baboons " that should be replaced with " beware of Hijacking mugging rejects of the human race " the only way our "officials" will listen is to boycott them. No money coming in = no salary. ride else where till they feel the pinch. Its in our hands to rectify this problem. Force them to do something about it. Yea i know it will cost petrol to go ride in durbanville but its safer. Id rather pay these places to go ride than to go ride in fear for the next attack. Tokai for me has become a problem. I dont always want to ride in a group and i dont want to be told where to ride because its a crime hot spot. Will people wake up only when we have a fatality or a rape?
  17. Hi Guys We are up and running on www.backtracker.io Please check FAQ on crowd.backtracker.io Do ask, posit, argue. We are in Technopark, Stellenbosch, and happy for anyone to pop around to try a demo unit - come by bike!
  18. Unfortunately there is a cyclist down this morning on the Abrey road exit (Durban bound) from the M13. Don't know the circumstances/cause but it didn't look good as CPR was taking place. Praying all ends well.
  19. Afternoon All, Through luck, fortune, destiny or just plain whatever I haven't been a victim of a bike theft or related mugging. BUT I've had to cut back on riding close to home that will suit me I've had to cut back on riding times I've had to cut back on riding solo.A quick glance at the forums on here and it doesn't take much to see there's been more and more bike theft related threads and it doesn't look like it's going to end or get better soon. Now I'm not the kind off guy who can sit idly by and either live and ride in fear or wait till something happens to me too. So...what are we going to do. Where to next with this? Should we organize a sting op to catch some of these bastards, should we start patrolling danger areas, should we call John Wick...something needs to happen and if it's going to be by us then nothing's going to happen. Ideas?

  23. So, I rode from home in Sandton to the start yesterday. The traffic on William Nicol after the highway was very heavy. Understandable with such a large volume of cars and very few access roads. Never would I have imagined that Cyclists are such bad drivers: One idiot opened his passenger door right in front of me; Everybody on cellphones; Idiots with iPads over their steering wheels; All the traffic going in the same direction to the same venue, and half the idiots want to change lanes; Halfwits driving in the emergency lane and on the shoulder; Twits driving across two lanes If we expect non-cycling motorists to respect us on the roads, maybe we should start driving the way we would like them to drive: Look in your mirrors before you change lanes; Let another vehicle into a space ahead of you; Get off your F***ING PHONE It was more dangerous for me to ride to the start than doing the Saturday morning Cycle Lab Fourways run back along Cedar Road. And that was among thousands of cyclists. Learn to drive, so you can be an example to others. If you want to be safe on the roads, do the things that you would like others to do. Grrrrrrr.....
  24. Hello Guys I have made my return to the road cycling scene after about 6 years away, and boy has it changed!!!!! I use to be scared of bonking mid-ride, now I'm scared of getting stabbed for my bike, phone or even my powerade. Various cycle clubs have group rides on weekends, and that's great, but I was wondering if someone would be interested in doing n group ride in the mornings ( 3+ people ) on weekdays. I do have 2 other people who cycle with me, we average about 27km/h and do a loop that starts at Centurion golf estate down to eeufees using Botha Avenue and back to the golf estate, giving us about 30km.Obviously we could change the route to suit other riders as well. Maybe Mondays, Wednesday & Friday's or any 3 days in the week, leaving enough time to bash some km's on the weekend's. If anybody is interested please contact me, otherwise any ideas or tips would be appreciated, I honestly just want to ride my. Regards Bruere 082 330 9393 bruere@live.com
