  1. Hi Guys, I have a Scott Spark Elite 29". Enjoy the bike but the more I ride it the more I'm coming to dislike the limited suspension settings. It's the Twinloc with the Full Open or Full lockout so when it's open there's a lot of pedal bob. Find that when riding on uneven terrain the open is too open and the lock is too stiff. Was thinking of upgrading the rear shock to a Fox RP23 or Monarch RT3 (both with the pro-pedal type middle setting). Any suggestions or comments? Done a bit of reading and it seems that the change would eliminate most of the need for the remote lockout lever. Thought maybe I could just leave it on for the front shock? Thanks
  2. The trails in Jonkershoek are about to be closed down!!!!!!! This is a statement of fact!!!!! NO JOKE!!!!!! Background: When riding at Jonkershoek you pay at the gate for a day permit or you buy an annual permit. This permit gives you access to Jonkershoek and has NOTHING to do with the MTB trails. Not a single cent of this goes towards trail building and / or maintenance. NOT A SINGLE CENT!!!!! Cape Pine is not interested in the MTB trails and has no problem with shutting it down. The income derived from gate fees is accidental and does NOT form part of their business plan. After the sorry state of the trails following the fires a few years ago a Trail Maintenance Movement (TMM) was created by a few concerning cyclist. They pumped huge amounts of their own money into the project. Specialized also contributed thousands and put signboards up to mark the various trails. On these boards they printed a very low key Specialized logo. The movement is still strong and has a substantial slush fund available for trail maintenance. Issues: We as a group felt that there are people and businesses riding on the back of our effort without contributing a single cent towards the initiative. The coffee shop owner was given a few bicycles by a local cycle shop at the beginning of 2014. They proceeded to brand the coffee shop and entrance to Jonkershoek with huge Scott branding, in effect ambushing the effort put in by the TMM. Jonkerhoek now looks like Scott Park and you might be forgiven for thinking that Scott diversified from bicycles into the growth of coffee beans and supply of roasted coffee. Our request was simple: Please take down all branding or at the very least match the contribution of already branded contributors. The effort to set up meetings with the coffee shop owners was unsuccessful and Scott’s attitude is simply that they have a right to this, which they legally have but morally it stinks. Their branding and attitude towards TMM resulted in a shutdown of all maintenance. This is clear from the sorry state of some of the trails. WE ARE NOW PROCEEDING WITH THE PHYSICAL CLOSURE OF SOME OF THE TRAILS AS WE ARE NOT PREPARED TO FACE POSSIBLE LEGAL ACTION FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF MAINTENANCE ON THE TRAILS. Our solution, We feel that if you don’t contribute towards the effort you have no moral right to put your branding all over the entrance – if you match branded contributors’ efforts then you can. We are not prepared to pay towards corporate SA’s marketing efforts. Specialized has agreed to make Jonkers a brand free zone – this is , and despite their huge contribution, our suggestion is to make this a brand free zone. This will ensure that the much needed maintenance will go ahead and that the trails will remain open for a long time to come. What you can do: Put pressure on the people involved to remove all branding and request the owner of the coffee shop to attend the TMM meetings.
  3. In the light of the non-Authentic (fake) bikes that seems to be doing the rounds (aired on carte blanche), does anyone know if there are evident ways of identifying whether your scott spark mtb is a fake? i.e. some Scott stickers or signs that they have put in for this purposes (like a watermark on a money note type thing?
  4. Don't message me - I'm just re-posting a Gumtree ad I saw There's an ad on Gumtree - looking for owner of a bike. Suspected stolen - guy asking whose it is bike it is. (don't go nail the guy - he's looking for the owner) If you know the owner, send him the link. http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/tableview/notice-do-you-know-of-anyone-that-has-had-a-scott-spark-elite-recently-stolen-from-them/1001148761730910017407209 The ad reads as follows: On Friday I bought a bicycle for my son from a guy near the Seven Eleven, Sandown Rd, he approached me asking if I am Interested. It turns out that I am looking for a Bike for my son to commute to school with. After a very sad story of his father passing away last week and him and his mother needing cash, I told him my budget was lower for my son bike. After I did my shopping he approached me again on my way home accepting my offer. When I showed my son the bike he almost fell off his chair. We did some internet research to find the bike value to be much higher raising my suspicion. I took down details from the guy but it seems dodgy, the phone number is message mode, and the address I will try again.
  5. Hi Hubbers Newbie here, looking for advice on a MTB under 15K. I've been wanting to get started for quite some time but for whatever reason haven't gotten my now plump arse of the couch. The stars are however now aligning so with that and just a little luck, I should be in position to get a decent starter bike in the next month or so. I've done a bit of reading on this site and it and it seems there are still many diverse opinions regarding which size wheel to get, suffice to say I think the best bike for me is going to be a 27.5" or 650b.... still don't know where that name comes from ;-) A couple of things about myself: I'm ~176cm short, turned 40 last year and mainly want to get into this for a change of lifestyle and to get fit. I stay just south of Johannesburg, there seems to be lots of decent trails out here close to Eikenhof/Walkerville. In fact I'm seriously contemplating riding the Summer Fast One this weekend. I have a borrowed Scott Aspect 630 26er (Large) I can use which I got last week. Besides a few rides scoping out area the local area I haven't really done any riding since I did the 94.7 in 2001 :-0 . Over the last 10 days however I've done 2 x 10 km, 2 x 15km and 1x 43km ride (done in three stages) :-). I'm fairly confident I'll complete the 12km ride, at the summer fast one, but I'm nervous to do the 35km route, my comfort zone seems to end at around 20odd km's so 35 would be pushing it... How long do they give you on the trail before they load you into the bakkie and take you back to the start :-)? Anyway back to the question at hand. What bike, 650b hard tail for under 15K? Overall weight is important, I think, and I've a long way to go before I start doing very technical riding, or long marathons which is why I think the 27.5" hard tail is the best option for me. Color is not terribly important but I'd rather not get a red bike. I've had a look at several options including the Scott Aspect 720, GT Zaskar (red one), Titan Pro, and various Merida's in the Big 7 range like the TFS 300 and 500. The bike standing out for me at the moment is the ~11.5kg Merida Big 7 XT Edition So what do you guys think, anything else I should serious take a look at? .

    Stems

Hi, I'm looking for some guidance please. Is there a difference between a oversized 31.8mm and a 31.8mm stem for m/biking? For example Ritchey WCS C-260 oversize 31.8mm is the stem on the Scott 700 RC but no mention of" oversized" in the Ritchey website on the C-260 stem. Thanks.
  7. Im thinking if buying a demo 2013 scott spark dual suspension from a cycle shop. Bike has never gone offroad approx 30ks on it. Late 2013 model-not the same shock as the 2014 model. Asking price 22000. Advice on whether this is a good bike /price will be appreciated.
  8. Which is better, a rear shock mounted horizontally or vertically? Which is stiffer? Does it matter? I am in market for dual sus 29er, and on the list are: - Merida 3000 - Scott 920 - Giant Anthem X Adv - Cannondale Scalpel The Merida & Giant has vertical mounted rear shock, whilst he Scott and Cannondale has horizontal mounted rear shock. I do not want a gomma-gomma ride.

  11. Pyga are great looking bikes at the best of times .... but just look at what happens when you add a touch of performance enhancing bling. Here is Scott Soothill's Pyga (thanks for the pictures) after he made a few purchases of FUNN components from www.performancebikes.co.za
  12. My brother's GT Avalanche 0.5 has been stolen out of the garage over the weekend. It's a large frame, normal Yellow and silver of the Avalanche 0.5. Marcozzi fork and Scott saddle. Most component are LX except for the Truvativ FiveD crankset. It has 1 Alex DM24 rim and a Sycros's rim with Maxxis Crossmark tires on. Thats me on the bike at a race last year. Sorry, don't have a better photo. If you see it please let me know.
  13. Hi all, Just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the people here. I have entered this sport about a week ago and actually did my first proper ride today, nothing too serious, did the medium course at Rietvlei in Alberton. I got awesome swop deal on a 2011 Scott Aspect 20 so that's my ride - for now. I did make the mistake of buying the wife a real cheapie bike as I first want to see if she is interested in the sport. Going to have upgrade the shifters, rear and front derailer. Going for a Shimano Acera setup there. At least it will be a little better until I can get her a proper bike. My daughter of 9 seems to be very keen and at least I bought her a much better bike than I did for mom. Nice twist gears with Shimano components. She finished the 5km track with me on Saturday - very chuffed with herself. I am very impressed to see how friendly cyclists are on the forum and on the trails... However I must say some bike shop sales people can seem very snobbish sometimes. If you are not there wanting to spend R7500 or more they not really interested in dealing with a person. It's a bit of a generelisation but that has been the experience thus far. Can you guys recommend any good bike shops in the south and east of JHB. Cheers Douw

  15. Hi all, I'm due for an upgrade and am stuck between 2 bikes. What would you sugges: Momsen AL429 or Scott Spark 960 with AirShock upgrade. Any advice would be highly appreciated.
  16. Looking for the person that purchased the second Scott Contessa from TVRIGGS over the weekend, we have been supplied the incorrect front wheels on the bikes, if you could contact me directly to allow us to get together to switch them so we both have a matched pair of wheels The young man in question has misplaced your details Regards
  17. OK, so I'm vacillating between different options - sell and upgrading to dual suspension, keep and upgrade to dual suspension or do some upgrades on my hardtail. Very briefly, the idea of upgrading to DS came went I entered the W2W for later in the year, pretty sure it will be a more comfortable ride. Whilst I'm happily reveling in the chaos that is the interwebs, reading every thread/article/piece of info I can get my hands on, participating in other threads about the subject here on The Hub, changing opinion every 5 minutes and sweating over the options...all in anticipation of another purchase (yeah, I'm every marketer's dream)... ...maybe a good option is to spend money on my existing bike to soften it up somewhat? 18. Hi All, What options are you aware of in SA for 29" rims that have 28 spoke hole (I'm looking what options are available after a face plant.) 400-450g range for XC race use Existing rim is 604 ERD and the same rim is not available from Scott/Probike currently (Syncros XR2.0 on a Scale 910) - ideally I would like to reuse spokes (per scott site, DT Aerocomp straightpull with red alloy nipples - which I suspect together cost more than the rim) I looked at Velocity Blunt SL rims as an option, but turns out Coolheat haven't got stock of 28 holes and won't have for sometime. Any other suggestions welcome - Thanks
  19. I notice more and more bike manufacturers are getting involved in trail building and maintenance.Specialized has for a while been involved in Jonkershoek and recently I heard Rocky Mountain getting involved in Contermanskloof and a few other bike parks around SA.(not forgetting the local clubs as well as the guys of Table mnt doing great work). It's great that the bike manufacturers are putting money back into the sport in this way that is a benefit to all.A few weeks ago at Jonkershoek I noticed Scott also involved with the trails at Jonkershoek so a big up to all these guys.Carry on with the good work.
  20. Hi Hubbers So I started cycling beginning of the year and progressively upping my km's and technical riding. I've done a few one-day 40km-ish races also. Fitness and technical skills improving rapidly. Age: almost 40. So, I ride a Scott Scale 910 Carbon 29er HT, which I'm really enjoying. BUT...as I'm doing more trails and and faster speed the bumpiness of many of the rougher single-tracks is starting to become noticeable. Bearable, but noticeable. My question is this, I'm doing the Wine2Whales in November - as a noob, how much will it hurt doing three days on a HT? Will dual suspension make a noticeable difference? If that is the way to go eventually in any case...rather make the switch now? Advice appreciated.
  21. I am looking at buying a new bike the use for trail and single track. What would work better? The 29er or 27.5/650b? I am about 1.7m tall
  22. There are three of us from Mauritius doing the Race to Rhodes this year. Our batch starts on 13 June. We are looking for transport on 12 June from Durban airport to our hotel in Pietermaritzburg (Aintree Lodge in Scottsville) and on 17 June from Rhodes back to Durban airport. Can anyone suggest a shuttle company that we can approach or know of someone preferably with a double cab that can transport us around. We are happy to pay for the transport. Thank you Eddie
