  1. Hello fellow bikehubbers. So awhile back I was extremely fortunate to win the Oakley x Ubuntu Bikes competition sponsored by The Lake Magazine. I was ecstatic, and still am. The bike is a beauty in it's own right. The only thing is the bike is made from a mixture of parts, and most likely more of a collector's item than a full-on fixie. I have ridden it more than a few times, but I am quite afraid to switch from freewheel to the fixed gear considering the parts and a chance of something breaking. I can only seem to find the name of three parts which is the crank and chainring both are Suntour SR and the hubs are Shimano. I would just want to know what I could get for this bike, because I am considering to buy a more purpose built fixie. TIA, Oscar The bike: http://www.ubuntubikes.com/lake-magazine-x-oakley-fixie-colloaboration/

  5. Hi, I bought a road bike with Shimano 105 components and an 12-28 rear cassette. I have found that the 12 tooth does not give me a high enough speed and want to replace it with an 11 tooth gear. All the bike shops I have been to want to sell me a complete cassette with an 11 tooth gear but not just the 11 tooth gear itself. There is virtually no wear on the cassette and it makes no sense to replace the complete cassette. Is there anywhere I can get just the 11 tooth gear for the 10 speed Shimano 105? Or do I have to replace the complete cassette? All advice appreciated. Denis
  6. Hello all, Been curious for a while about these rotors, more specific the SM-RT99 model. Basically just want to know are these rotors better than the ones on my bike (SM-RT64 CL rotors)? I see both are center lock discs. I read that the Ice-Tech rotors handle heat better while braking, 20% better that, and that, but is it really that good or is it only marketing? Also, would it be a worthy upgrade over my current rotors? Thanks. ~ André
  7. Hi I have a set of shimano brakes. BL m445 levers and BR m446 calipers. Ive been told that some brakes are bled from the top down ie. through the funnel down the system or through a syringe pushing oil through the caliper and up into the funnel. Apparently its either or and there is a risk of damaging the brakes if i get it wrong. most of the videos Ive watched show it being done from the bottom up then top down. Could someone please shed some light on the topic and offer one or two pearls of wisdom? Thanks.
  8. Hi Everyone A couple of points and questions . Those of you that follow new shimano di2 development , will know that there is a wireless transmitter to show what gear you are in and your battery percentage on your garmin available to plug into your existing di2 integral or dura ace , and a remote steering fitted shifter that fits onto your handlebars for easy shifting . My question is why are these components not available in South Africa ? I have asked numerous cycle shops to order them but all of their responses are either shimano SA have no clue what I'm talking about or the most common answer is there is no worldwide stock available . Bear in mind I have been trying to order since the launch of these products in 2014 , so no stock available is a nonsense answer , and on speaking to many bike shops , they all say that Shimano SA importers only bring in what they think will sell and will not take special orders . Anyone care to shed some light on this ? Yes i know one can order from the UK or US , but why should we not be able to order legit Shimano components in our own country . Thanks Richard
  9. I'm fixing up a bike with Shimano Ultegra Flight Deck ST-6501 shifters. The hoods are stretched and sticky. Sies. I've scoured the Internet for replacements but with no luck. Any suggestions? Are any other hood models compatible with the ST-6501 shifters?
  10. Hey. I've just bought a 1x11 XT upgrade kit from CWC to replace my current 2x10 XT kit. I plan to run a 32 front blade and it's a 11-42 cassette. The upgrade kit comes with a long-cage RD (SGS), but I think I'd prefer a medium-cage RD (GS) to limit rock strikes and just to keep things a bit neater. Does anyone know of any issues or have any practical experience / advice running a medium-cage (GS) XT RD with a 32 blade and 11-42 cassette? Or should one stick with a SGS when running this set-up? Shot, Dave
  11. I've got a Cannondale Rush 1 with 38 / 24 chain rings up front and an 11 / 36 cassette. I'd like to go slightly bigger up front, maybe 40 /26. The bike has a Deore Hollowtech crank. Will this work? Common sense says that I would just need to life the front derailleur a bit, but common sense has it's limitations.... Any suggestions? The guy at Chris Willemse Cycles told me I'm stuck with a 38 up front and an 11 at the back as my best ratio - or I need to buy a road bike!
  12. [i did a quick search and didnt find a thread dedicated to this, if there is, sorry for this and please direct me to it.] Shifter mounting + Brake mounting =.........the challenge of finding the right matchmaker (and there are MILLION variables) AND it can change your "ah let me quickly do a brake set change" to a long night of research and scratching in your spare parts bins. Now something that can puzzle me at 11pm is how to fit my new SRAM Guide brakes to my Shimano XT shifter. I had Hope brakes before and that needed its own 'matchmaker'. I thought there should be a thread here on the hub with pics of how to do these things, a summary where anyone can come to find what ever they need (so please add stuff if you have more info). Patches are the guy to actually do this (he likes writing long posts with pictures etc etc) but it seems like I asked some questions he didnt even know so I will start and throw a few things in that I have found in the last few hours. So the XT shifter I bought (i-spec), it looks like: See the problem? Yes, nothing nice and round that can go around the bar, because it is made to go nicely onto a Shimano brake like so: But because I planned to use it with Hope brakes, I bougth the Hope matchmaker back then, it mounts on shifter like so: And to the bar like so: There are obviously plenty of shifter options and plenty of brake options and yes you can mount them seperately, which is what I considered next. Which would look like this for the brake: And well something like this for the shifter: or where it seems you need/can use one of these: Which does leave you with a 'busy bar' but I am SO desperate to get these damn brakes on that I would have let it happen...IF I had one of those options avaible ...SADLY I dont!!! Here is where the frustation started at 11:30pm last night. And no, you can not mount the shifter with the hope matchmaker and the top half that came with the Hope lever assembly, because neither have thread. Refering to these two parts: So the option I then started looking at is the matchmaker option with the XT shifter and SRAM brake. So it looks like here alone are quite a few options too. Here is what I think will get my bike sorted asap: (I actually think I might have the right little one piece somewhere at home...if not, I might find a friend that do (before day end). Patch did tell me about this website, but I dont think they can help me as fast as I need it: http://problemsolversbike.com/products/mismatch_adapters Randomly here are other options I have found with Hope brakes: More reading: http://www.braggibikes.com/mixmatch/ At least the guides and dropper post lever was easy going...match/love at 1st sight... And this is just great for 'unclutered' bars: Edit 1: 11pm = night..think it is called a tautology
  13. Hey Hubbers, I have a problem I am hoping someone (with adequate knowledge) could help me out with; I have a Sram Force groupset, with the 1071 Hollowpin chain (which decided to break twice on me during a ride today) but needs replacing. A buddy suggested I get a Shimano chain, which I did, and the bike shop sold me a CN-HG95 Chain. Now I know generally speaking, Shimano and Sram are interchangeable, BUT, if I research the HG95, it is specifically mentioned that it has been optimised for MTB use (but nowhere does it day it won't work on a Road bike...). Does anyone have a final answer for me (in terms of experience)?!
  14. What sort of life do you get out of your components? Chain, Chainrings, Cassette, Blades? Would be interesting to see if one brand gets more kilometres / hours than the other. Do cheaper, heavier components last longer? Does anyone even measure their bike maintenance or just replace components when necessary? I usually get around 1200km out of a XX1 chain. 11 000km on a X01 cassette and still riding fine.
  15. With SRAM's 12 speed Eagle groupset officially announced, what will your future drivetrain upgrade look like?

  17. So I bought a set of M675 SLX brakes after reading rave reviews about them. I have been very impressed with them, they are easy to use, have great stopping power and fit well with my XT 1x11 setup. I have the option to pt on some Sram Guide RS brakes. Why? Because I can. I ride mostly enduro type riding, so a lot of downhill and technical type stuff. I am led to believe the Guides have better feel/modulation to them and they are just as powerful as the SLX. The main difference is the brake fluid being used between the 2. My main reason for considering the change is heat build up and brake fade when things get hot. Does anyone here have experience with these 2 setups and can comment on which is the better for enduro?
  18. Seems like WiggleCRC are spreading the net wider and have reportedly bought up rivals Bike24. With CRC already not shipping certain brand overseas and Wiggle following suit the number of different retailers for direct purchase / shipping available to SA is shrinking. http://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/wigglecrc-acquires-german-rival-bike24-reported-100m-move-356123

  20. Hi Everyone I have a question. Would a pedal that is pretty much identical to a Shimano XT pedal sell? The info: 10 grams heavier, sealed bearings over the loose ball bearings in xt's. They will retail around R500 cheaper then the Shimano XT pedals. The pedals will come with a 6 month warranty. What does everyone think?
  21. Hey Guys First thread on here so take it easy on me haha... I have a Cannondale Trail 29 Hardtail. Used to ride a bit of DH at varsity (I sucked, good at crashing though.) and then focused on paddling and running the last 8-10 years. I decided to get back onto a bike cos it's fun and you can do such a cool mix of long explorey days and cool techy trail rides. Anyway, I bought my budget Cannondale Hardtail with tubeless done and the front derailleur removed by the previous owner as he was just using it to keep miles off his fancy bike for beachfront rides etc. I got it for R 9 500 only a year old in immaculate shape. So its 1x10 SLX and has the Shimano branded but no specific name (SLX / Deore etc) brakes. I manage 95% of the time with the 1x10 as he put on a 40t big cog - spin out on the downs obviously but that's fine. 34t chainring. I've done close to 100km days pretty comfortably and I manage most of the steep tech stuff ok too. I think that 1x11 would obviously be better if I want to do some stage / longer 1 day races. The brakes are also adequate but not much more than that. What sort of price would I be able to pick up a SLX 11 speed rear derailleur and cassette and some better brakes? Happy to trawl the used section of the hub until I can find something! I've put on wider Ritchey bars and a shorter (50mm) stem as it's a large and I'm probably in between M and L frames. Do you think it's worthwhile? I'm happy and comfortable on my bike and riding some pretty decent distances / speeds and technical stuff so don't feel the need to go full sus any time soon due to extra cost and service requirements etc.
  22. Hello Hubbers, I've been looking through the forums and can't seem to find a definitive answer to the problems I face. Sooo... Firstly Shoes... I have a budget of 2k for my shoes. I would really like something that has the boa system because i think its frikken awesome but please let me know if its any good. So basically what is a good shoe in the 2k range? Should I get something like a first ascent torque 2 or an flr f55 or something shimano... or should I save up and get the Specialized Expert? Have also seen the Fizik m5 boa, those are also cool, but again is it the best in this price range. I am leaning toward the Giro Cylinder because it has get boa system and it looks pretty awesome, but are the shoes good? So basically I'm just trying to find out whats a good brand to go with for quality and value for the money that I end up spending. Also, where are the good shops in Johannesburg that I can shop at for good deals? Secondly pedals, I want to ride trail as well as start doing some good distance on the road... I want to go clipless and I have found pedals for sale on the hub that I will get... I just want to know which is better between the Shimano m520 and the m530... Is the extra cage on the 530 better? Thank you, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Apologies for the essay

  24. Hi Guys, I should start by saying that until this weekend, I haven't been on a bike in about 13 years (since school days) when a Raleigh M-Trax was the coolest thing around, so please forgive me if my knowledge is a little limited and perhaps leads to me asking dumb questions. I promise I'm a quick learner A good friend of mine gave me a GT Avalanche 0.0 (I know, old as balls) to get back in the swing of things, and ever since he told me that I'll be getting it, I've been looking at what it's got, and what I might like to change. The first of these would be replacing the current v-brakes with some entry level disk brakes. The frame and hubs are good to go in terms of fitment possibilities (shimano hubs with 6x bolt fitment), but my question pertains to the brake levers currently on the bike, and how replacing these will affect the fitment of my existing shifters. From what I could see, the existing shifters are fitted to the brake levers, which in turn are fitted to the bar. The nature of this fitting is still foreign to me, as is whether, and if and if so, which hydraulic lever will enable me to maintain this fitting? The Deore range is pretty vast in terms of models, and I have no idea what to look for in terms of being able to retain my existing shifters. I realize that the bike is worth about R4.65 and fitting anything other than a smiley face sticker to it might be overcapitalizing, seeing as Gumtree is rife with second hand bikes with disc brakes fitted for less than the average disc brake kit, but I'm just exploring the possibility in the hopes that someone rips their stock brakes off to upgrade, and then sells it to me for a steal Thanks, and have a good one!
