  1. Anybody know of a shop in Cape Town that carries spare Shimano SPD cleat bolts? Just bought a new set and managed to undo (and lose) one of the bolts while riding :/
  2. Ok so this is the Shimano codes explained. I just want to start of by saying that I got this from an international Cycling forum.(BikeRadar.com) And I don't want to take credit for someone's work , I just found it interesting. It is quite helpful when buying second hand and there is no name like XT or SLX on the part. Shimano part numbers are of the form AB-C wxy Where AB and C are letters, and w, x and y are numbers AB denotes which bit of the bike it is, some examples: RD=Rear Derailleur FD=Front Derailleur HB=Hub (front) FH=FreeHub (rear hub) HP=Headset CN=Chain CS=Cassette BR=Brake (caliper) BL=Brake Lever SL=Shift Lever ST=STI levers (road or mountain) CB=Cable WH=Wheel FC=Front Crankset BB=Bottom Bracket C denotes which discipline. M for Mountain, R for Road, A or T for Audax or Touring. So BR-Mwxy is a mountain bike brake caliper. w is used to denote the product group: M3xy and M4xy are below Deore M5xy is Deore M6xy is LX and Hone M7xy is XT M8xy is Saint M9xy is XTR The x is the 'major' change. M95y was the matt XTR, M96y was the shiny, M970 is the latest. The y are minor variations. RD-M951 was the rapid-rise version of RD-M950. But otherwise they are exactly the same. They do similar things with front mechs and clamp sizes, too. You also sometimes get letters after the codes. RD-M951 SGS is the SGS version. Below is the date codes they are normally a little silver sticker somewhere on the part. YEAR A 1976 B 1977 C 1978 D 1979 E 1980 F 1981 G 1982 H 1983 I 1984 J 1985 K 1986 L 1987 M 1988 N 1989 O 1990 P 1991 Q 1992 R 1993 S 1994 T 1995 U 1996 V 1997 W 1998 X 1999 Y 2000 Z 2001 A 2002 B 2003 C 2004 D 2005 E 2006 F 2007 G 2008 H 2009 I 2010 J 2011 K 2012 L 2013 M 2014 MONTH A JAN B FEB C MAR D APR E MAY F JUN G JUL H AUG I SEP J OCT K NOV L DEC If I made any mistakes or if there is already a topic(I couldn't found one) like this on the hub please tell my, and I will edit.
  3. There is just too much to show from the 2014 Africa Cycle Fair. Here is part 1 of the day three finds with a few Shimano Di2 equipped steeds. Click here to view the article
  4. Hi there I'm looking at new brakes as the ones that came on my bike just aren't cutting it (Shimano m505) everything else on my bike is SLX so my first instinct is the SLX and they are higher up in the Shimano line so therefore should be 'better'. I want to know from experience what everyone's experience has been and any advice on which ones to go with as I'm looking at the SLX m675 vs the Deore m615. I see online there's about a R700 difference. I ride cross country mostly doing ROAG events around 40km but I want to work towards doing longer races and even a stage raceor two. I'm 178cm and 59kg and currently have 180mm up front and 160mm in the back, I would like to keep it that way but will get new rotors. Also is ICE TECH really worth it especially with me being so light I'm not heavy on the brakes. I looked and can get SLX set with ICE TECH rotors from CRC for about R2 200 and my girlfriend will be in England at the end of the year anyway so is that a good option? (I like supporting local but that is an awesome deal). And with everything being Shimano on my bike I want to keep it that way also for the sake of ease with I-Spec, I like the cleaner look. HELP!!!
  5. I've currently got Shimano M395 disc brakes with Shimano B01S resin brake pads. Where will I be able online to buy a set of the brake pads, I have tried BUYCYCLE, EasyBike and Cyclelab's online shop but I can't find it on any of them. Or is there maybe a different type of resin brake pads that I can replace it with?
  6. I just bought a new bike, without wheels, and want to use my old Shimano RS10 wheelset on the bike. Campagnolo groupo means new freebody, and being 11spd would have meant a new Shimano freebody - either way, it's now about which works out cheaper. QUestion is, where can I find a freebody for a Campagnolo cassette with the flower type formation of a Shimano freebody, which is 11spd compatible?
  7. I am in a unique position in having the difficult task of choosing between the three*... Di2 is awesome when it works, but if it doesn't, you're stuffed. Perfect shifts day in, day out. It does also have a weight disadvantage. Practically maintenance free apart from charging the battery and lubing the chain. Force22 is light in comparison but settling in will occur and adjustment will be required. Cables and housings will need to be changed every so often. Edit: Athena EPS has emerged as an option now too. Middle ground between the two groupo's and is Electronic... And more importantly, it's Campy.
  8. Dear all. I need your assistance. I'm new in MTB and have Trek X-Caliber 6 2014. The problem is my front derailleur Shimano M191. In some positions of front gear and back gear I hear friction in it. I've tried to adjust it but without success. I've decided to change it on Shimano FD-M590. The problem I see is that stock one designed for 8 ring cassette (which is installed) and Deore is for 10 ring cassette. Please, advice if it is going to work properly and if not, what change I can apply? Thank you.
  9. Hi guys Currently have Shimano 2300 (8spd) on my Specialized Secteur. Been riding for about 2 years now and feel like it's time for an upgrade. Have got no issues with the brakes or crank (compact), but the shifting is starting to bug me. Also would like to get a wider range cassette, maybe something like a 11-26 (13-26 current). Don't have a fortune to spend, so my question is is it worth it to upgrade to Tiagra components, or should I hold out and replace with 105's? Thanks
  10. If I buy a slx or a deore or a xt group set, what really is the difference? What benefit do you get for the extra cash? About to upgrade my spark 950 components and looking at the prices it's from 3500 to 17500 for a group set. And please if you can be specific, don't say speed or effort
  11. Good day Im looking to buy a decent set of double sided pedals having Clipless on one side and a big platform on the other side. Im looking at the Shimano PD-A530 but as they are for road I am not sure if they will last if used for MTB. Opinions and thoughts welcome.
  12. So so sad, my SOMA Double Cross Disc, was stolen last night. Please keep an eye out for me. It is an unusual bike in that it is a steel framed road bike with disk brakes. It is probably the only SOMA Double Cross in Cape Town? Here are the details: Colour: black Material: Steel Tange Prestige Drivetrain: Shimano Dura Ace Seatpost & stem: Silver Thompson Wheels: Mavic Open Pro rims , Shimano XT hubs, 32cm Continental Gatorskin tyres Saddle: San Marco Rolls. Brakes: Shimano discs Handle bar: Silver Mtb Nickle Wide It was a break-in stolen from a home in Rosebank Cape Town. I will pay a generous reward to anyone who finds this bike for me.
