  1. I am looking at buying a new road bike to start off with. The guy at the bike shop I visited advised me that in terms of value for money, nothing will beat the Silverback Strela (the 2016 model looks spectacular I must say). Not even Giant or Merida will be as good according to him. Does anyone have experience with this bike and is it worth getting? It come with full Shimano equip, but just an 8-speed. Is this good enough to start off with?

  4. We would appreciate and hope you can help us with some advice and feedback on our plans to buy mountain bikes: My brother and I live in Centurion and are seriously considering taking the plunge and getting a couple of mountain bikes, both for fitness and for fun. We are quite similar in that we are both about 40, overweight (about 100kg when we should be about 75kg), about 1,77m tall with an inside seam of about 76cm, so we are probably looking at medium (about 19'') frames, from what we have been able to gather by reading articles. At the beginning we will be mostly on roads, with some pavement and dirt, in order to get fit. Later, when we are more comfortable and confident, we hope to do more and more trails. From some personal narratives we have read, it seems as if the larger wheels (29ers) will therefore suit our purposes more (although we will welcome any expert opinions). We figure we have a total budget of about R10,000 – R12,000 (though we might be able to push it a little bit). Quite a few people have mentioned Silverbacks, specifically recommending the Solas as great beginner bikes, although the cheapest Solas we saw (Sola 4, 2015 model, new) are in the R10,000 - R11,500 range, which is about double our budget. Some of the online shops advertising Solas were Singletrack Cycles, VBike, Redhub Cycling and Cycle Factory. Although we are scared to buy secondhand since we don't know enough about MTBs to make sure we don't get ripped off, there are a couple of Silverback Solas available secondhand: - A Sola 4 advertised secondhand for R7,000 in Kempton Park (frame size unknown, wheel size unknown) https://www.olx.co.za/ad/silverback-sola-4-ID15Qanc.html#3c5be512b9 - And a Sola 3 (medium, 29er) for R8,500 in Nelspruit https://www.olx.co.za/ad/silverback-sola-3-ID15OgSm.html#3c5be512b9 The entry level Silverback 29ers seem much cheaper. A Spectra Sport (2015) is advertised for R4,999.98 at Cycle Lab, R5,500 at Kyalami Cycles and R5,999.99 at VBike (all online prices). Bearing in mind the cost of accessories like helmets (definitely) and probably gloves, eventually shoes, shorts, etc. will all add up, we figure the advantage of buying new is getting a warrantyso won't have to worry too much about things breaking and paying for repairs and replacements, plus building a relationship with a shop that can help with advice, skills and equipment, but buying secondhand we can save a few bucks plus there is always a chance for a few accessories thrown in to sweeten the deal (although maybe a store would be willing to do the same, since we are buying two bicycles, which seems a pretty good deal for the shop). We would appreciate any advice and recommendations you might have. We are not set on anything as we are complete novices when it comes to MTBs, and plan to go to a few shops in Centurion and maybe Pretoria this Saturday in person to look at bikes and talk to the experts. We understand that the risks are that we buy beginner level bikes and then get hooked and want to upgrade, but our budgets simply won’t stretch that far yet, so we hope to buy decent bikes now that will allow us to upgrade later, as it will be a long, long time before we even consider competitive riding, if ever. So any thoughts on specific bikes, shops, prices, new or secondhand, equipment, accessories or anything else we are not considering or you think we are wrong about – please help and drop a comment!
  5. Hey Guys, So I have narrowed my search down to 3 bikes. [i ride chilled single track, fireroads, want to start doing more advanced single tracks as my skill level increases, don't want to die climbing. Have a slightly more aggressive style.] The bikes are: SCOTT GENIUS 740 27.5 SILVERBACK SLIDER 2 27.5 GIANT TRANCE 2 27.5 They are all around the R35k mark new. Also looking at the second hand market but the same bikes. Giant most expensive bike, then Scott and Silverback the same price. Can't find many reviews on the Silverback but they seem to be very popular, another bike shop sells Scott more than anything else and Giants well Giant. Help Appreciated

  8. Hey Everyone, So the usual I'm sure.. which one to purchase. Background: I'm 28, 78kg. Started out cycling again not so long ago. Previously iv ridden BMX when i was in way younger, then road for a year or so on an old Trek budget MTB. Recently started doing a bit of road, cycle track (gravel) and jeep tracks off road routes. Nothing downhill/single track yet but would like something capable of handling some easier single tracks and off-road routes too. I did own a Scott full suspension bike a few years ago but was sold it thinking a could ride a bit on road to gym and also hit trails, it felt incredibly slow and the suspension sucked up pretty much all the power going forward. (Probably also due to incorrect settings and so on). What i'm looking for: I need a bike that I can put some sort of slick tires on. Im using 26x1.50 cheap ones for my old Trek now for on-road and they make a massive difference compared to the stock MTB ones. I would like to do the Argus (for the first time) next year (wont be racing against the clock) but have mates doing it too that are looking at cheap road bikes, perhaps something that can keep up. I have read lots over the years and do realize the differences in angles and components, being more upright, gearing and so on. I don't expect to stay with them the entire way but the more capable the better. Not sure if I should be looking at 29er's or 650B's. I really like the components and everything I have read when it comes to the Silverback 15 Sola 1 (R23,394). Giant XTC Advanced (R20,750) but read that the above Sola 1 would be better? with better components. Trek Superfly 9.6 Carbon (R24.500) 27.5/29 Scott Scale 950 (R21,900) I'm thinking the Trek or Silverback one being Carbon the other not. Both Rockshox Reba RL front suspension. Silverback mostly Shimano XT/SLX Trek Deore XT Sram7. The XC / Cross Country bikes I think would suit me better than trail for what I'm looking for and Hardtail seems to be a good option for my price range (the extra saved on rear suspension going towards frame wheels and components) I plan on running off road tires tubeless eventually and getting a spare set of wheels and slicks for on road use. I would like advice on any other bikes in that range and on wheel sizes 27.5/29. Also on gearing for road use, Don't want to do any serious mods besides wheels and tires. Thanks very much Sean
  9. Good day, everyone. I sold my MTB and looking for the new one. First wanted DS but looks like it is not my league for now looking at the prices. My LBS proposed me Silverback Sola 1 2015 model for R 16.9 k after some negotiation. I like the spec and the look of the bicycle. Rode it a bit and enjoyed. Unfortunately I can't find any reviews for 2015 model of users' feedback. Please, advise if it is a correct choice and the price. Thank you.

  11. Hi, I have been riding for about a year now and want to move from a 26" Silverback to a 29" Full sus. I have 3 bikes in mind but cannot seem to choose a bike. They all cost the same so the price issue isnt a factor. The three bikes I have looked at is the Scott Spark 940, Giant Anthem X (Upgraded to Crest Wheels) and Silverback Sprada 1. With me staying in the Garden Route I ride alot of offroad with a few single tracks here and there. Please help!!! -Johnathan
  12. Designed from the ground up around the use of a 29" front and 27.5" rear wheel, Silverback's 279 range of mountain bikes are not your usual run of the crowd bikes. By doing this Silverback believe that they have combined the best of both worlds into one chassis giving the rider an advantage on the trail. Click here to view the article
  13. The Splash is a women’s specific Alloy hardtail featuring Silverback’s 279 Dynamic Efficiency Technology. This in a nutshell means a 29er front wheel and a 650b rear wheel, a fairly novel setup also seen on Silverback’s Signo Tecnica reviewed here. Click here to view the article
  14. Born out of a desire to explore, the Silverback Signo Tecnica combines the roll over traits and bigger contact patch of a 29" front wheel with the quicker accelerating, more agile 27.5" sized rear wheel. By doing this Silverback believe that they have combined the best of both worlds into one chassis giving the rider an advantage on the trail. Click here to view the article
  15. Hi All. I am looking at changing my bikes from an Aero frame to something more comfortable as I am doing longer rides and the Aero is starting to feel too hard on my body. I have been looking at the Silverback Sirelli 2 which looks like great value for money but as I am not too clued up with specs can someone share their knowledge and let me know if this is a good buy for +/- R35k ? If not, what else can you suggest in this price range. 16. Hi Guys I'm new to the forum and would like to know if you will be able to help me... Currently I ride a Silverback Sola 4 mountain bike and have enjoy the bike a lot but have decided for race purposes I should get a road bike. I have been looking at buying a new road bike and have been looking at the Silverback Space 1 or the Merida Scultura 4000 both of which are in a similar price bracket and both are full carbon road bikes. The Silverback groupset is Ultegra where as the Merida is only a 105 group set. How huge is the difference between these 2? Also want to inquire on the after sales support on the 2 companies? from what i have read (haven't need to contact Silverback about my current bike) Silverbacks after sales support is amazing. thanks for the help.
  17. Silverback's Sprada is in it's third year and subtle tweaks following feedback from their test riders have seen it mature over the years into the trail 29er it is today. With Jonkershoek and Tokai Forest being it's testing grounds, it should suit South African conditions to a T. We ride one to find out. Click here to view the article
  18. I have a 2 year old Silverback storm 1 that I absolutely love and I have had a repeated issue of the small piece of steel that is integral to the drive side drop out coming off. I have epoxied it three times and still no avail. I called Silverback to ask for some advice as I had done the first time it happened and they gave me a warranty replacement frame. Hats off to Robert from Silverback for excellent customer service and they can be assured of my ongoing support of their brand.

  20. It's new bike time! I've recently sold my Commencal Meta 5.5, and am planning to buy a new full-suss trail/enduro rig sometime next year. In the meantime, I'm getting back to basics, and looking at a hardtail to get fit and do some trail riding. I probably won't race an enduro on it, but I will ride it everywhere I can. I've narrowed my search down to the Silverback Sola 2 (29") and Slade 1 (650B). Both 2014 stock. (Note: please don't recommend other brands / models - it's going to be one of these two). Given my height (1.86m) and the rave reviews the Sola is getting from a mate of mine (who went from a Slade to a Sola), I am leaning that way. However, I have a lot of perceptions (probably misconceptions) about 29ers, so I'm also drawn to the Slade - is less of a mind shift coming from a 26er. The Slade's spec is what's enticing me too. RockShox Recon Gold (vs Silver on the Sola), better rear hub, better shifters (XT vs Deore on the Sola), and slightly wider (21mm vs 19mm on the Sola) and tubeless-ready rims. Given my fat ass (almost 120kg), I am worried about a narrower, larger diameter wheelset - and the Recon Gold seems like a nice upgrade over the Silver. That said, I've been told by someone who's opinion I trust to disregard the difference in spec and go for the larger wheels. So - I welcome any input. Especially if you've ridden either (or both) of the above. Do I go for the bigger wheels and what is starting to sound like the superior frame / ride feel, or do I go for a better fork and more robust wheelset? Or am I just being paranoid about the spec? Thoughts?
  21. I see that Silverback made a top-10 honourable mention for one of their fat bikes. Seems like Silverback has done really well at Eurobike this year... What is the feeling about fatbikes in SA? I would love to ride one of these beasts in the dunes.
  22. Hi guys, spotted this bike at Ballito Junction last night. Guy claims he bought it. Seemed like a decent enough chap, so could be true. Was a bit suspicious as he was in overalls, and his 'briefcase' was a plastic bag. Said he had a cool bike & asked if I could take a photo. All I could really see in the dark was that it was a Diamondback.........
