  1. Hi, been to SA couple times, mostly CT, surrounding areas, Stellenbosch, Garden Route. This year, I want to bring my gravel bike. I'm wondering which routes around CT are most enjoyable so I can pick my accommodation accordingly. I ride a mix of gravel and tar, up to 100km/day and like to stop every once in a while to have a good coffee / glas of wine / meet other cyclists. Open to switch to Stellenbosch area if that makes more sense. Thanks for your suggestions! JT
  2. Anyone seen the new Wine Lands Regional permit? Bought one on Tuesday because it's very much worth it and to support the industry. https://winelandstrails.com/ This allows for access to over 700 km of mountain bike trails - Wine Lands Cycling Club - A2Z (Grabouw) - Helderberg trials (Helderberg/Somerset West) - Stellenbosch Trail Fund (Stellenbosch) - MTO Jonkershoek (Stellenbosch - Banhoek Conservancy (Kylemore/Pniel) - Franschhoek trails (Franschoek) - Paarl trails (Paarl) - Wellington Wild boar and Scouts (Wellington) Membership will be valid from 1 December 2021 to 31 December 2022. Adult Board 19 - 64 years - cost of annual membership R1500 Junior Board < 18 years - cost of annual membership R1250 Senior board > 65 years - cost of annual membership R1250 Such a great initiative - apparently it took 3 years to get all the parties around the table and to agree.
  3. Hi there, We're a team of 2 driving up for the Sani2C. We're based in Stellenbosch, so anyone from the Cape area is welcome. We have space available for 2 people with their bikes and kit. Flights are difficult and very expensive at the moment, so join us for the scenic drive there and back, and save on costs. Contact me asap so that we can make arrangements! 4. Hi Guys. We are visiting the Stellies area from George this weekend. Just want to know if anyone has info on the XCO track used for the UCI Cup in 2018. I cannot seem to get any info on it, except that it is in Stellenbosch, close to or on varsity grounds? Will we be able to go and ride on it? If so do we have to buy permits and where?

  6. Hi Guys Can someone recommend a reasonably priced self catering house / guest farm / rustic spot in the Stellenbosch environs? A group of 6-8 of us are looking for our next MTB weekend near Jonkers and / or G-Spot. Thanks Steve
  7. Dear Hubbers A student here looking for some commuting, route and safety advice. I’m very interested in commuting daily with the road bike, from Durbanville to Stellenbosch, and back. In the mornings I’ll leave at 07:00 and get there at 08:00, and in the afternoons I can ride back at ~12/1 or on some days 4pm, depending on classes. I’m considering 3 route options, and that’s where I want to ask what you think will be safest. Safety (with regards to getting hit by a car, as well as being attacked/mugged by a person) is my biggest concern, and the only thing holding me back. 1st option is Bottelary road and then the R304 into Stellenbosch, past Kayamandi. That last part is obviously my main concern, but maybe at 8am, with cars sitting in traffic there, it might be okay? Or is that some false security? And maybe avoid this route in the afternoons, if there is little traffic? 2nd option is also Bottelary road, but then taking Kromme Rhee to the R44, and past Cloetesville into Stellenbosch, to avoid Kayamandi. I just don’t know if Kromme Rhee is a good idea with lots of cars in the morning…I’ve had some of my closest passes there, not fun. But maybe a good afternoon return route, with less traffic? 3rd option is Polkadraai road (after taking that new road past Zevenwacht to get to Polkadraai). Similar distance, but the more hilly route should take a bit longer. But like I said, I’d rather ride 10 minutes longer than not arrive there at all.. I’ve linked the routes below if you want to have a closer look or make a better suggestion. Lastly, route options aside, would you do it, or allow your son to do it, from a safety aspect? I really want to at least try it during the summer time, to save money on petrol and car maintenance, save the frustration of traffic, and get some good training in at the same time. But I obviously realise that none of that is worth it if you’re risking your health or life.. I look forward to hear your opinions, thanks! ----- Route links: Bottelary route: (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tyger+Valley+Shopping+Centre,+Willie+Van+Schoor+Drive,+Bellville+Park,+Cape+Town/-33.8775771,18.6826083/-33.9041575,18.699289/Stellenbosch+University,+Stellenbosch+Central,+Stellenbosch/@-33.9024175,18.6797014,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m16!4m15!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcc50ba223f9d4d:0x37df01cc2657c7c3!2m2!1d18.6350371!2d-33.8735434!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcdb2432e9fe5d1:0xcb41c6b0379331f3!2m2!1d18.864447!2d-33.9328078!3e0) Kromme Rhee route: (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tyger+Valley+Shopping+Centre,+Willie+Van+Schoor+Drive,+Bellville+Park,+Cape+Town/-33.8775771,18.6826083/-33.9041575,18.699289/-33.8676453,18.848498/Stellenbosch+University,+Stellenbosch+Central,+Stellenbosch/@-33.9000289,18.6797014,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m17!4m16!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcc50ba223f9d4d:0x37df01cc2657c7c3!2m2!1d18.6350371!2d-33.8735434!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcdb2432e9fe5d1:0xcb41c6b0379331f3!2m2!1d18.864447!2d-33.9328078!3e0) Polkadraai route: (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tyger+Valley+Shopping+Centre,+Willie+Van+Schoor+Drive,+Bellville+Park,+Cape+Town/-33.8775771,18.6826083/-33.9509485,18.7097798/Stellenbosch+University,+Stellenbosch+Central,+Stellenbosch/@-33.9174227,18.6797014,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m16!4m15!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcc50ba223f9d4d:0x37df01cc2657c7c3!2m2!1d18.6350371!2d-33.8735434!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcdb2432e9fe5d1:0xcb41c6b0379331f3!2m2!1d18.864447!2d-33.9328078!3e0)

  9. Hi there. I am a 63 year gent. Looking for people/group that cycles average speed of 23-25 km per hour. Road bike only. I live close to Eikestad Mall in Stellenbosch and the University. Just back in the saddle again after a 12 year lay off. Did the 2018 Argus in 5 hours 43 minutes with very minimal training. Ride on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Note: Rain = no cycle.

  11. Alet Morgan, a Stellenbosch mom and runner, was tired of all the rubbish next to Jonkershoek road on her daily running route. Thursday, 15 February, she organised more runner moms and friends to help clean up the 6km stretch between Jonkershoek and Stellenbosch. They only managed 1.2km, by which time they filled 32 refuse bags with rubbish. 4.8km remains. Thursday, 22 February, The team from Extreme Lights joined the runner moms to pick up rubbish. We decided as a local business, we also needed to do our part for the community. Our staff committed two hours per week for community service. As part of our #EcoPledge to #CleanUpYourAdventures we chose to join and support the runner moms on the Jonkershoek road as our first, of many clean up projects. We want to challenge other businesses to do the same. Select an area that is special to you. Everyone has one. An area that you always say: I wish they wouldn’t make such a mess or I wish they would clean that up. Go there, and clean it. Do your part for the greater good. Everyone is invited to participate in the next cleanup. It is planned for the upcoming Thursdays, 1 and 8 March on the road to Jonkershoek. 8:00 to 10:00. Contact Theresa Fourie on 084 511 8647 if you would like to join.
  12. Can anyone offer some advice on the best (ideally safe, scenic and reasonably challenging) road route? I don't mind taking some detours. At the moment I've got something like this https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_F7VgQ6Mwd6Bmbd3V-iTGJXLcxI&usp=sharing Thanks in advance!
  13. Can anyone please suggest a good option for deep tissue sports massage. Someone that understands body well, strong touch etc? Thanks in advance!
  14. Howzit guys, So my friend and I are planning to go through to Stellenbosch on Saturday to go ride Jonkershoek for the first time. I heard from a few people that it is an amazing track. I am also eager for a new track, so really looking forward to it. Can you guys who have ridden the track please give us advice on what to expect. How long would one ride? How much water will you need? Nutrition? Climbing? Distance? The price of permit? How late does the track open? Any other feedback will be much appreciated as I just want to be prepared for the day. Thanks. ~ André
  15. Crossing the Helshoogte Pass into the incredibly scenic Franschhoek valley, we stopped off at the more-than-300-year-old Boschendal wine farm, to see what the Boschendal team and master trail builder, Bennet Nel have put together. Click here to view the article
  16. So there used to be a lone wolf roaming the streets of Stellies on a sweet El Mariachi SS (in spectacular General Lee Orange I must add, and, frankenstein parts until I get more of dem dolla dolla bills). Anyways, I was enjoying the realness of my steel steed on my way to lunch when suddenly this young wolf flashes past in front of me on an almost equally wicked ride - a Contraband Rogue! Could it be? Who is this foe I did ask! And what be your intentions my fellow road warrior? Are you a pack wolf, or shall I challenge thee to a duel?
  17. Hi there, I have a mountain bike that i use for training. However, I have recently entered a triathlon with a 90km cycle so I am looking for a Road/TT bike that I could hire for the event as well as use regularly (once a week) to get used to it? I've seen there are a few places in CT that offer for R300 a day but then I still need to get it to Stellenbosch so by the time I do the Triathlon I might as well have bought myself a new bike (the race is in September). Does anyone know a cheap place in Stellenbosch to rent a road bike, or is anyone themselves willing to lend/rent me their bike for two hours on a weekend to get some time in the saddle? Feel free to comment/PM Thanks! ps. I am quite tall (193cm) so a large or XL bike preferably
  18. Three Stellenbosch University students – Hans-Werner Heuer, CP van Wyk and Max Sullivan – will be representing University Sport South Africa (USSA) at the international World University Cycling Championship (WUCC) 2016 to be held from 16-20 March 2016 in the Philippines. This achievement is even more significant considering the fact that the three-man team consists of Matie students only, selected at a recent USSA national cycling event hosted by Stellenbosch University and attended by seven South African universities. 20. The Wannabees Cycling Club of Somerset West is providing a splendid holiday opportunity to visiting mountain bikers. The club is now offering an opportunity to join your friends and family on the club’s trails for the year-end holiday period at a much-reduced fee. Share in their glowing admiration of the incredible privilege of being able to meander amongst the vines situated at the foot of the majestic Helderberg Mountain. The club’s trails are mostly family friendly and there are more than 90kms of exploration opportunity, which should satisfy the exploration urge of most visiting mountain bikers. View the trailmap here: http://wannabteam.com/cycling-routes/mtb-routes/ The club is offering a 3-month holiday permit, valid from November to January at a fantastic value of only R150 per person. Please contact the club’s secretary at: secretary@wannabteam.com, to arrange your purchase. Please do not ride the club’s trails without a valid permit. (The trails are marshalled). If you need a light, you shouldn't be on the trail. No helmet, no ride. Stay on the trail, and obey all direction markers. The club still offers their regular day permits @R40 per day per person which is available at local bicycle shops in the Helderberg basin during office hours, at Somerbosch Wine Estate 7 days a week from 09:00 – 16:30 and, 24/7 at the reception desk of the NH Lord Charles Hotel. Let the fun begin…

  24. As part of the Winelands region of South Africa, the greater Stellenbosch area features an abundance of trails, one of which is the Bottelary Hills trails network. Covering a total of 76km, these trails offer scenic beauty and incredible views of the winelands, Table Mountain and False Bay, and combines a variety of different elements to form a well rounded MTB destination. The network can be accessed from 7 different starting points, all of which sell day passes and something to eat or drink, and it also happens to be a few hundred meters from my doorstep. 25. It was back to Delheim, just outside Stellenbosch for the annual Dirtopia Delheim Enduro this weekend. As per usual, the race consisted of 5 fun stages, some with freshly built, loose and slippery single track. The tree tunnels and hard packed gravel/clay surfaces on stages 2 and 3 meant full aero tucks and seriously impressive speeds, naturally favouring the DH riders. With any event this time of year in the Western Cape, the relentless heat plays a role, but luckily we were blessed with a cool and cloudy day, perfect for racing. Click here to view the article
