  1. Howdy parteners! (Peter Sellers, "The Party", 1968) I would like to get an idea about the general feeling towards carbon parts (especially handlebars, stems, saddles and seat posts) on mountain bikes, more specifically for use in beginner to intermediate singletrack (i.e. small jumps, rock gardens, etc.) Do any of you make use of carbon parts on your MTB? If so, what is your experience i.t.o. lifespan and dependability? Note that I'm aware that if you hit a tree, it can break. I'm talking about the likelihood of taking a jump and snapping your bar in two on the landing. Would you say that 3K carbon is better than UD, or vice versa? Thank you kindly!
  2. Hi Hubbers I've been reading topics for a while and have yet to post something but I think I've come across something that needs your help. I am looking at new hubs for a 2015 Giant Trance 27.5 2. I bought a set of WTB KOM i23 rims and am looking to build a nice trail wheelset. Some info that I think is relevant: Weight: 78kg Riding style: Trail, aggressive XC and marathon I noticed that The Rapidé Ultralight Hubs are incredibly competitively priced and I am quite interested in a set. Obviously Hope/Chris King are tried and trusted but I am quite keen on supporting lical particularly if it is a bargain and good quality. Does anyone have any experience with Rapidé hubs?
  3. Is anybody using a pair of Adidas Terrex Trail Cross shoes as daily shoes? I have been a Merrel Chameleon Slam fan for a number of years but after a few pairs it's time for a change. Been looking around for a while now. Not into the Salamon trail shoes and there isn't anything that has caught my eye except the Adidas Terrex. I know that they are marketed as biking/hiking shoes but was wondering how they fared when given walking duties... http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod14-adidas/dw/image/v2/aagl_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-adidas-MLT-Site/Sites-adidas-products/en_PT/v1463098581568/zoom/AF5967_01_standard.jpg?sw=500&sfrm=jpg
  4. Hello everyone, I am 'new' to taking Mtb biking seriously and I just purchased a Lapierre XL 729 Frame. I wish to build it up to a sweet well specified bike starting With the Cannondale Lefty. All advice is highly welcome. Thanks for reading.
  5. Just a quick question regarding the difference between the men's and women's Fox Flux helmets.... is there a difference between the two? Only thing that I can see are the colours?? I picked up a Women's Flux yesterday at the Fox Shop in Springfield Park that was marked at less 50%. It was a L/XL (My size) So I tried it on and it fitted perfectly (Better than my current Sweep) Mainly white with some blue on it with a black peak. I couldn't see any reason that it should be women's specific.... At that price I bought it.
  6. Bicyclegear.co.za were fortunate enough to ride the new Boschedal MTB trails on Heritage Day yesterday. A lot of work has gone into the trail which starts from Boschendal Estate. The parking is secure, there are showers and you can grab a coffee, cold drink and something to eat both before and after your ride. There is a ton of trail cut into the mountain and through their forests. The downhill runs will suit the enduro crowd perfectly, with berms, camelbacks and table-tops all in the mix. It was wonderful riding on virgin trail without any sign of rutting yet. Everyone who rode was basically making their own lines. The switchbacks are tight and exhilarating, I would certainly recommend seat-post droppers here. The route is well marked. On the 30km route, we gained 700metres in climbing which gets you right up to the mountain cliffs, with amazing view over the valley below. The trail is set to open in two weeks.
  7. With kilometres of natural trails, Lesotho is truly a trail riders paradise! The 2015 Lesotho Extreme was an action packed weekend of incredible trail riding and spectacular scenery. 8. So I've managed to get hold of a 650b Intense Tracer 2 and am looking at fork options. Most Intense's are spec'd with a 150s or 160s which give a head angle of 68 and 67 respectively. Obviously everyone wants a pike but I don't want to throw R20K at the fork and there isn't much about 2nd hand in the 150+ realm. There is though a couple of deals out there on new 140mm Rockshox sektors. While not the top of may peoples list it's a solid fork built on most of the Revelation hardware and will do as a stop gap until something longer comes up (but that could be a bit). Just wondering how much it will effect the angles and ride with a shorter fork that will steepen it it up a bit and if it's going to go well or dilute the frame design?
  9. Hey Guys Gone over the whole Trance/Anthem thing way too many times. Ride on local trails around Southern Suburbs, Cape Town. Table Mountain and hopefully if Tokai opens this year there too. I'm still learning but like riding single track, more aggressive time of style and like speed. Would like to start riding out near Stellenbosch and other trails in the Western Cape. Riding a hardtail 1999 old school Trek at the moment and looking at either the Trance 27.5 2 or the Anthem 27.5 SX. The price of both seems to be in the same bracket. I'm pretty convinced the Trance is what I want. Have not test ridden either but will in the near future. My Question: The type of trails in the Southern Suburbs, Western Cape and surroundings from what i have ridden to the clips I watch on Youtube seem to be more XC type flowing single track, jeep tracks, small jumps if any. Would the Anthem not be more suited to the trails around here than the Trance? I don't race but would like to do some of the more chilled out ones in future for fun. Want to do the Argus but will buy a cheaper road bike for that when the time comes. Besides a short ride to the gym or shops this bike will be used mostly off-road on trails. Excited to learn how to wheelie, manual, jump a bit, small drop off's, bunny hop those things in riding I find more exciting then shooting up a hill to beat a record. Saying that I don't like a massive heavy bike that feels like a tank on the up's either but from what I have read the Trance is good up hill too. Any feedback based on the local trails. Trying not to convince myself I need more bike than I do. I'm one that watches a few Redbull Rampage clips and ends up riding a DH bike to gym on road haha Thanks guys
  10. My wife and I are planning on adding a new member to the family soon, we have not yet settled on a breed though, one of the main reasons is which breed will be best suited to our lifestyle. We are both very active people, her more so road riding and all forms of running, me MTB, both climbing, hiking, surfing etc. So we are wanting to get a dog that will gel with us on such outings. Have been reading a lot about which breed to go for, so think we will settle on one soonish... BUT, are dogs allowed on trails (mainly in CPT where we live)? And if so, can they be off leash? Also, how will other riders feel about it (assuming it is 'legal') as I have never seen a dog with a rider before, but as long as the dog is well trained, it wouldn't stress me.. So.. to the poll..
  11. Hey Guys, So I have narrowed my search down to 3 bikes. [i ride chilled single track, fireroads, want to start doing more advanced single tracks as my skill level increases, don't want to die climbing. Have a slightly more aggressive style.] The bikes are: SCOTT GENIUS 740 27.5 SILVERBACK SLIDER 2 27.5 GIANT TRANCE 2 27.5 They are all around the R35k mark new. Also looking at the second hand market but the same bikes. Giant most expensive bike, then Scott and Silverback the same price. Can't find many reviews on the Silverback but they seem to be very popular, another bike shop sells Scott more than anything else and Giants well Giant. Help Appreciated
  12. Hey Everyone, So the usual I'm sure.. which one to purchase. Background: I'm 28, 78kg. Started out cycling again not so long ago. Previously iv ridden BMX when i was in way younger, then road for a year or so on an old Trek budget MTB. Recently started doing a bit of road, cycle track (gravel) and jeep tracks off road routes. Nothing downhill/single track yet but would like something capable of handling some easier single tracks and off-road routes too. I did own a Scott full suspension bike a few years ago but was sold it thinking a could ride a bit on road to gym and also hit trails, it felt incredibly slow and the suspension sucked up pretty much all the power going forward. (Probably also due to incorrect settings and so on). What i'm looking for: I need a bike that I can put some sort of slick tires on. Im using 26x1.50 cheap ones for my old Trek now for on-road and they make a massive difference compared to the stock MTB ones. I would like to do the Argus (for the first time) next year (wont be racing against the clock) but have mates doing it too that are looking at cheap road bikes, perhaps something that can keep up. I have read lots over the years and do realize the differences in angles and components, being more upright, gearing and so on. I don't expect to stay with them the entire way but the more capable the better. Not sure if I should be looking at 29er's or 650B's. I really like the components and everything I have read when it comes to the Silverback 15 Sola 1 (R23,394). Giant XTC Advanced (R20,750) but read that the above Sola 1 would be better? with better components. Trek Superfly 9.6 Carbon (R24.500) 27.5/29 Scott Scale 950 (R21,900) I'm thinking the Trek or Silverback one being Carbon the other not. Both Rockshox Reba RL front suspension. Silverback mostly Shimano XT/SLX Trek Deore XT Sram7. The XC / Cross Country bikes I think would suit me better than trail for what I'm looking for and Hardtail seems to be a good option for my price range (the extra saved on rear suspension going towards frame wheels and components) I plan on running off road tires tubeless eventually and getting a spare set of wheels and slicks for on road use. I would like advice on any other bikes in that range and on wheel sizes 27.5/29. Also on gearing for road use, Don't want to do any serious mods besides wheels and tires. Thanks very much Sean
  13. For 2015 Giant builds on the foundation it has laid for it's Trance in 2014. The latest model makes a worthy claim at being the true do-it-all trail ripper that it's always promised to be. Click here to view the article
  14. Since I started riding last year I have been mapping my routes with GPS and saving them to my Google Earth account. Reading a post today sparked a thought I had some time ago... Would people be interested in a nation wide database of trails that they can review by location/area, grab the profiles and even download the data file for their preferred GPS device. It could even go as far as listing costs for the trail for non members, access times if any, nearby services, accommodation if needed, etc.. the list can really go on forever. I know there was also someone posting about making an events website last month, that could also be something that could be linked. My main concerns are... Firstly, would riders be willing to share their data files with me (as much as I would love to ride all the trails to collect the data myself, I would need to rely on you for the data), secondly, would this idea p1ss anyone off, i.e. bike clubs, land owners, etc. I know there are sites out there that offer route info like http://www.mtbroutes.co.za/ based on location, but I just think that this would be mainly focused at being able to download the trail data file. I suppose as well that most trails (or at least the ones I've ridden) are clearly marked, so there might not be a need for this at all.. So basically what I'm asking is whether this idea is just a wasted cause and I should leave it as my own private database or whether riders, especially those visiting new areas or trails for the first time, would be interested in access to it. If there is an interest, please feel free to send data files to routecollection@gmail.com and I will start this endeavor.

  16. There has been a lot of talk about the Garden Route Trail Park lately, so much so that Monster Energy Cape Town decided to take a road trip to find out first hand what it’s like. After a long drive, we were finally greeted by a sign letting us know we were in the right place. Click here to view the article

  19. I have a Giant Revel 29er amd I am thinking of buying a second hand Giant Reign 3 26er. I am really getting into jumps and more technical stuff. Would you advice going for that or not? Keep in mind I am on a tight budget otherwise I would just go and buy a new 29er dual suspension.
  20. HI All My partner and I are desperate to get into the SANI2C RACE we have a Trail entry Anyone want to swop? - contact Joshua.brophy@liblink.co.za Thanks Joshua
  21. I am the proud new owner of a Momsen Vipa. Started building it last night, but hit a snag or two so will only be completed around lunch today. For now build kit looks like this: Size:...........Large Fork:..........RockShox SID XX 100mm, 15mm TA Shock:.......Fox CTD (Stock) Wheelset:..American Classic Tubeless Handlebar: Race Face SixC 725mm Stem:.........Sunline 50mm Brakes:......Avid Elixer Grips:........ODI Groupset...SRAM X0 2x10 Seatpost:...Truvativ Noir Saddle:.....Selle Italia SLR Tires:........Schwalbe Rocket Ron / Racing Ralph TLR Pedals:......XT Trail Weight:.....? Build is a bit of a morph between carry over and what I had in the parts bin. Planned changes 1. Not so sure about the white fork. Will wait and see what it looks like when all is done. Might even go 120mm after this. Will add some playfulness to what will be a XC rocket. 2. Once I do fitment the 50mm stem will go. Will replace with correct length Momsen 3. Again, fitment might see the SixC bar go. To be (most likely) replaced by Momsen Up/Down bar Was nice to see frame comes frame protection and how to guide of what goes where. Not the usual stock stuff either. Sized and pre-cut already. Nice touch. Graphics have been changed slightly from pre-production "Epic" model. Looks even better now. TT graphics are more subtle with only Patrick Morewood's signature on there. Rest of the bike is a study in attention to detail. Thanks again to my LBS Cycle Factory who's building the bike with the love and care it deserves! Frame was delivered at the shop yesterday and they're doing their best to get it ride-rady in time for me to take it on leave with me this afternoon. Big up to them. My (close to) favourite little detail on the frame? Internal routing for a Stealth Dropper! Yes, I will be the guy on the XC start line with flat pedals and a dropper post on my 29er race bike! 22. I'm looking to upgrade my Momsen SL 629 to a dual suspension 29'er trail bike. I've got around 35k to spend. I like the look of the Trek Fuel Ex 8 as well as the Giant Trance X2. I do most of my riding on the road, but want this bike for Berg n Bush, Sani 2 Sea and some lekker Karkloof riding. I'm not looking to win the races, just have some proper mid-pack fun. Any advice or other options would be greatly appreciated.
  23. So as an average rider I decided I wanted to build an enduro/trail type ride....read all the hype about bikes in my budget and desired. I ended up building a Pyga pascoe ( My Zola bud...taxi yellow ????) Have a like minded mate that rides same kinda bike, travel wise but with 26r wheels... Booooo doesn't he know there dead. He built a meta am with a monarch 150mm Rt3. We have done many rides where we have swung a leg over each other's steeds to see what the real world differance is and see if all the hype that those talented journos write ring true for us mere average joe's. We already had a good idea in our minds as to what the differance is between our bikes, and strangely enough we both had the same perceptions mostly about the pro's and con's . Then he went and did the unthinkable and Threw even more money at his steed and put a mrp stage 160mm 34 mm (previous fork was a rockshox 120-150mm air rct3 32mm)Can accommodate either a 26" wheel or a 650b. And changed his Tyres from purgatory & ground control to wtb Bronson 2.3 front & back. As he has a busted wrist and wanted to know how his brand new mrp felt ,especially compared to the pike on my taxi. He suggested take both bikes out and do the same twisty forest sections and rocky runs and up and down more than a few times straight after each other and see if I could feel the differance in the two forks. Yea of course I laughed my arse of at first ,but after not much debating I was keen to be the test biatch. I did a 58km ride on my taxi on the Saturday and was a little leg weary . This was by far the longest ride I had done on my pascoe and wanted to see how it felt in comparison to my 29r's I had previously owned (the list is long).. I rode in pedal mode fork & shock and it was awesome, until I started to get fatigued 10 Km's from home. Then the weight & fat tyres of the bike took its toll and almost instantly made me feel like I was pulling a trailer behind me. I know this is the same on any bike, but was amazed at how quickly it sapped my energy. But with more xc orientated tyres a lighter wheelset I could do the distance and be a lot more comfortable doing it at the same time. Would I be as fast as a 29r ? Never, but as soon it pointed downwards or got rough I would be laughing my tits of at the 100mm carbon boys. So I meet my mate on Sunday as planed and I have a go at thrashing his new mrp and comparing it to my pike. I ride his meta first and instantly can feel the weight differance in the two bikes. my first thought is if I had to drag that meta over a 60 km route ....well I just wouldn't. Our normal 20-30km rides with stops in between no problem, but there is no ways that the meta could live with the pascoe over flat out distance. And it ain't because of the wheel size . I was instantly comfortable and confident with the mrp and felt like it has transformed his ride. Am also sure the tyres have a roll to play as well but as soon as that meta pointed downhill it was like it was a bulldozer on rails...I was blown away by the mrp / tyre upgrade, and considering it wasn't my bike and a 26r ( there dead aren't they ? ) I had a huge grin and was laughing to myself every time it pointed slightly downwards. Then I jumped on my pascoe and instantly I could pedal quicker...the first part was straight up. Thinking to myself i should be quicker and more confident on my own bike . I hit the first forest section and was instantly at home on my bike. Come out the forest ride along the path and hit the Rocky road section going down, nothing wrong feels like every other time. Pedal up through the rocks and then hit the fun part of the ride, where is starts to wind down though the loose gravel etc. Get to the bottom ride through the forest and it dawns on me the meta's weight disadvantage made it feel more planted coming down. We lower the pressure for my weight and I go again on the meta. This time the fork, tyres and the whole combination of the bike was gob smacking to say the least. It tracked through comers (so much so that I wacked the pedal whilst cranked over going through a fast sweep,in the forest) with such ease that I just kept pushing it harder and going faster. Bombed it down the Rocky road, and flew over the rocks with out thinking,**** I'm on my mates bikes don't bin it. I couldn't wipe the grin of my face. Don't get me wrong I love my Pyga pascoe and had a fat jol, riding both bikes back to back. We also did timed sections through the forest and the taxi was about 10-15% quicker. Was it the tyres size, possibly but I think so it was the weight factor as much as anything else. The pike is a stunning fork, and so is the mrp. Would have no qualms about putting either on my bike. But the biggest surprise was that I couldn't feel the differance in the wheel size. Sure over long flat fire road type of riding the pascoe would ride away from you. But if you want to point something downhill, damn that meta is a sweet sweet ride. And they say 26r is dead...blah is what I say. Already have a meta am lined up for myself. This is only my personal experience and am a very average rider to say the least. I hope in some small way anyone looking to buy a enduro style bike this will encourage them to take the plunge.
  24. The MTBer

    Shovels

I don't actually know where to post this, it have a lot to do with downhill and trail building so here goes. I want this shovel that is attached for trail building, I see the guys in the USA, Canada, probably Europe use them as well . 1. The shape op the shavel grabbed my attention - The square point for taking a lot of dirt at once, we guys don't dig to find diamonds so we only need the dirt on top and then take it from there - The underside is more flat, so you can easy pack a jump 2. The long handle - I am 1,94m tall and the ordinary shovels you use is in garden kill my back I have a hard time finding one of those, Lasher don't make them and the hardware shops in Centurion isn't very keen on helping. I was wonder since I can't find one of those I can go to an engineering firm and ask them for help. Does any hubbers have the tools/knowledge to make the shovels? Do you think I am wasting my time here?
  25. I live in Jhb. Currently ride a trance 2014 X2, if you had 15k to spend would you buy a second hand anthem or upgrade the trance (fork, dropper post, xt groupset)?
