  1. Urgent appeal. Window for comments close today. - Submissions closed, thanks! If the objections succeed in blocking this track for the reasons provided, it's a precedent that makes for a slippery slope from here on.. The article has been written from one side only, this is quite clear by the reasons provided. Please read and if you support the effort to responsibly construct and manage this proposed trail, send a one line email to the address supplied. I think Meurant has proved himself several times over to be a responsible ambassador for trails in this country. https://www.facebook.com/ama.rider/posts/1960106460682691
  2. Need to know which trail is safe to ride alone. There are too many trails, not too sure whereabout good to go and ride. Your feedback will be great.
  3. Capaia Wine Estate is hosting a Trail Run on Human Rights Day 21 March, so our normal tracks will be closed to the public just for the morning between 7am and 10am, while the race is taking place. If you know of any runners who might be interested in registering for the race, please use the below link to enter! https://entries.trailfun.co.za/ Looking forward to seeing you at the track over the weekend!
  4. I'm doing a weekend away (Fri - Mon) for a family getaway to Crystal Springs Resort and contemplating whether we should be taking mountain bikes for the weekend. Are there any Mountain Biking Trails in and around Crystal Springs Resort? if so, has anyone previously been there and taken your bikes?
  5. Hi all Is anyone able to give me some details on downhill trails in and around Cape Town? I'm pretty new to the area and don't know many peeps involved. Thanks in advance. G
  6. Klipheuwel Bike Park situated at Klein-Brakrivier adjacent to the N2 has one of the largest pump tracks in the area with a XCO track starting/finishing right adjacent to it. Safe for children and with Farm Stall and Beer House located on the same premises. Some great trails starts from the venue over private farm land next to the river and into the hills. The park is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 08h00 till 17h00.
  7. I'm goin g to Ngwenya Lodge near Komatipoort for the first time - Anyone been there and ridden in the area Road or MTB that can give some suggestions - Mainly for 1 - 1.5 hr training
  8. Hello everyone Would just like to know if anyone could recommend trails near Mokopane.
  9. While we wait for the trees limiting full-time opening of Tokai to be removed or lopped, we've been lucky to have a few donors cover the cost of opening the trails to the public on additional days, such as public holidays. For this Friday's Youth Day holiday on the 16th, The Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig have, again, generously offered to cover the costs of the marshals, as per the agreement in place guiding weekend access. Thanks to Chris, who should be on a plane right now to compete for the title of Downhill World Champ, and the rest of the crew at The Bike Park, this long weekend could be your long weekend in the saddle! Good luck Chris, and thanks again.. Give them a follow on Facebook or twitter and inquire about some of their services like, skills training or bike repairs. - - - NOTE: There is another holiday coming up in August, so if you as a company or group of riders would like to contribute to open the trails for a day (includes a small donation to the trails), email us at trails@tokaimtb.co.za.
  10. TokaiMTB Volunteer Build Day 3rd June 2017, 9am - 3pm Join us for the next Volunteer Build Day of 2017! This build day takes place on Saturday the 3rd June at 9am. We'll be working on DH3 again! Thanks to the last build day, as well as the efforts of the Trail Tarts, the 2nd Bergvliet & 1st Steenberg Scout groups and a couple other intrepid volunteers, we should be able to open the lower extension of DH3 after this build day! After this, there will need to be a bit more material put into the trail in order to secure long-term sustainability (clay, clay, clay) and to get final shaping done, but with the basic trail being open, this could be done bit by bit and we can get back to enjoying DH3 in all its (NEW! IMPROVED!) glory. Vasbyt is now open again, and seems to be getting rave reviews from those who have ridden it. There are still a few areas which need additional material (clay and stone to replace sand) but that can be dealt with in good time. If anyone has a spare wheelbarrow, please bring it along to the build day, we'll be moving some material! Bring your hats, a spade or metal rake, sunscreen and plenty of water. A snack/lunch may also be useful! So - as normal, there are limited slots available. Please RSVP as soon as possible by filling in the form at the link below. See you on Saturday! As usual, please try to be there a little before 9am so that we leave nobody behind. Register here: http://eepurl.com/cQyhy5 Regards The TokaiMTB team.
  11. Kicking off 2017, the Trail Daze crew re-visited Cape Town to bring you the second of this two-part (part one) mother-city mountain biking showcase. We were joined by local pinner, industry influencer and all-round nice guy, Mark Hopkins. Click here to view the article
  12. Is anybody aware of any trails in the Drakensberg Sun area...ie should I take my MTB...Thanks in advance
  13. I am starting this thread to get some interest going regarding the mountain bike routes around Franschhoek. I have been facilitating a team of trail builders during the past 4 months. Work was mostly focused on clearing and repairing old forestry roads, but some new sections and links have also been built. We will launch the trails by the end of January once they are all marked and mapped, but in the mean time you are welcome to contact me to come and ride the routes as planned. This will also probably be the last chance to ride these mountains for free as a permit system will be necessary in future to ensure the sustainability of the project. Here are links to some GoPro footage taken recently: https://youtu.be/rhmVaZLK1x0 and https://youtu.be/oymc52ViYfo
  14. Howzit Hubbers! A quick update on iRide Africa's trail building progress at Lebanon. As some of you may know, Harry and I have been given permission to go and improve the trail network and we've been traveling out there and doing as much trailwork as we can between work stints (My skills clinic class schedule has suffered terrible, so sorry to those who I've had to turn away). We've designed new signage and Action Frames has kindly sponsored the material and printing costs (please support them if you need any display products made-they are mountain bikers!) but that signage will only go up in a month or so. So far we have added about 4km of trail to the network and without signage we are worried that the trails won't bed in and stay clear if riders don't start using them! So our suggestion/plea is to please download a VERY current map from our website here (we'll update it every time we add a new trail), plan a day to go riding/running and go and find these trails and give us your feedback while bedding in the trails! Obviously some of the trails won't link up perfectly yet so we want you to find your own way and connect the trails. We have the rad little problem of too much space and potential and not enough time/manpower to get the trails all built at the same time! The trails start at Oak Lane cottages/ Old MacDaddy and permits only cost R30! We've identified a few problems with the network and are trying to resolve them so more people want to ride there. What we are trying to fix is the following; 1) More singletrack 2) More variety to suit all types of riders 3) Better signage so people won't get lost 4) Improve start/end of loops to be exciting (proving to be difficult but long term goal) 5) More singletrack! So please, go and book yourself/family a weekend away and go and ride Lebanon trails and help us out while you are about it! We are planning a weekend of trail building for those that want to help out but most likely only in Sept/October. Lebanon MTB will kindly offer free accommodation, we'll supply free CBC beer and will have marked out the trails to build and the thinking is we get a posse of mtbers out there, do some serious trail building, and have a braai and social get together while we're doing so. We'll keep you in the loop with that one as we have at least 12km more trail to add there before we'll be happy ourselves!
  15. Time for an update on progress made so far. Over 4 build days the Volunteers have been able to open the Switchbacks, DH0, DH1, DH2 and Vasbyt. These trails may not all be rideable at this stage but you would have seen by now the photos of the work being done by Reto and his team contracted to add the finishings for fun and future sustainability. The contractor's bills will be covered by the PPA but as much credit needs to go to every individual who has contributed to this collective effort to reopen Tokai. Out of a potential 80 people expected over 4 build days (20 max for each), the turnout is currently sitting at an incredible 72! Thank you.. the goal of having the trails rideable by December is certainly achievable with everyone's input. For our 5th build on the 13th.. We have some more work planned for DH0, which is really starting to take shape now having been the worst fire and logging affected trail of all.We will also finally be moving onto the Snake trails starting at Boomslang which for some reason has taken the brunt of alien infestation and water damage. This trail needs you!Devil's Peak Brewery, in the same spirit of giving back, steps up again to support the volunteers. This is a very welcome contribution especially for the post work chat.. thanks DPBC. Registration link: http://eepurl.com/caAvu1 NB: Remember, if it is raining –like bucketing down– we'll make a call on the morning by 8am and email the group should the event need to be postponed. Thanks again!!
  16. Looking to put together a list of amazing places to ride, please share your pictures and your experience here....
  17. We head out to KZN and the greater Drakensberg area, to bring you an alternative take on ascending 1400 vertical metres, a world of off-piste trails and riding that will test the average man and his machine to their limits. Click here to view the article
  18. The last #enduro at Hakahana last year was over 2 days and there was a total of 7 stages. The plan is to go ride them all in one go (okay with a couple of chit chat breaks and sessioning of sections if wanted) on Saturday, the 7th May...........I still have to do that drop on Stage 7 I think it is (or is it the new stage 4). I am not yet 100% sure if we will have FULL access to like stage 5 or or, but I believe we are good to go. Meeting 7 for 7:30 start or do you guys rather want a 8am start? I am leaving SA soon and have said since the end of last year I want to do all the stages back to back Come have some fun!! (Normal entrance fee will apply and of course a good vibe with a beer or 2 afterwards..)

    DH trails in SA

Hi Gents and gals! Just arrived to SA few days ago and was wondering about good locations to ride my DH bike. (apologies if there are more of similar posts, couldnt find any) Im rather new to SA in general but I've noticed that enduro & cross country is pretty big here. Im staying in Gauteng area which doesnt look like it has many locations that would fit my interest. Any info regarding good locations would be greatly appreciated, whether or not around Gauteng. Thanks in advance, /Nik

  21. Morning all, I need some information. Is there any other downhill trails in Gauteng that is similar to St. Ives in KZN, or Hakahana? My first time at Hakahana wasn't fun, but I went back and thoroughly enjoyed it second time around. Does any of the other venues ( Big Red Barn, PWC etc ) in Gauteng have a "downhill" section, or something similar? Thanks Kevin
  22. Good morning, Has anyone used a bike on the trails at Wonderboom Nature Reserve in Pretoria? I know you are allowed to hike up the mountain to the Fort, but was wondering if bikes are allowed. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Kevin
  23. Good morning fellow hubbers, I'm not one to complain, and I'm writing this not to complain, but rather out of concern. So we've been planning on going to the Hakahana Trails for about 2 weeks now, and I'm saying planning, because it’s difficult to get everyone’s schedules aligned to go out as a group. I woke up yesterday, and everyone seemed quite excited to get going. You usually feel this way when going to a new trail for the first time. It’s quite a drive there and toll gates are only R7.50 combined (paid this with a smile). We got there at about 8am, and there were only 10 cars or so parked. I thought it’s still early, so more people would start arriving soon. To my surprise, half of those cars started packing up, ready to leave in the next 5 minutes. I thought nothing of this, and continued unpacking, and paying the fee at the office. Checking out maps with all the routes, we decided on the Purple route first. This is about 5.5km, first going uphill and then coming back down for the “downhill” part. The problems started as soon as we started the route. It started out with having to cross a stream over a bridge, this was easy. But having to manoeuvre across the bridge through knee-high foam that smelled like sewage was the difficult part. The route was rough, with the constant issue of having to dodge loose boulders on the track, low hanging branches and so on. But the worst part is that we had to turn around 4 or 5 times on the purple route, because the track leads directly into a barbed wire fence, or a locked gate. None of the routes are marked properly. So you basically look for the track that might be the easiest to continue on, only to find you’re heading directly for a line of trees. Turning around again! After about 1h30min we were done with the purple trail. Seeing as we only did 5.5km, we thought we’ll do the Green trail. This, according to the maps at the office was also a bit more than 5km. it started out fast, no rocks or boulders to worry about. I started to enjoy the ride. Heading to the woods, I had a smile on my face. All of a sudden, punctured tyres! We rode straight over a grassy bit with some rocks, but when we walked back a few metres, we saw the barbed wire lying on the ground. I was looking for the track where we should have turned into the woods, only to find a small path that looks like it’s what the horses use when roaming the farm. There was no indication that anyone has to turn in there with a bike. This was the last for me, and I walked back to where we parked, clearly frustrated with the morning so far. As I said, I’m not one to complain. But this was a total waste of the morning. It’s fun trying out new trails, but not under these conditions. Hakahana has great potential, and at least 50km of trails to enjoy. This is my opinion, and some might not feel the same. But I am concerned that under these conditions, they might be losing out… Thanks A Concerned Rider
  24. Howzit, I'm a Vaalie going to Cape Town/Langebaan for the holidays. I like to divide the trip into 2 days going down & coming back. Does anyone know of an accommodation spot close to say Beaufort West, for the going down part, which has mountain bike trails? It will be nice to go for a ride after a long day in the car. Thanks!
  25. Ok, So I am a MTB noob (not a cycling noob) and I have just acquired a bike (still to be assembled and delivered but...). I have 2 kids with HT MTB's and will be in Gordons Bay for the first 2 weeks of December. Question is, where can I ride with my kids? Ideally near GB where I can leave the house on a bike, ride and return without having to drive somewhere. Obviously nothing too technical - just want to ride with the kids (15 and 13). I see Wannabees seem to have great trails but that is a bit of a drive from GB to Lord Charles. Help!
