  1. Hey Bike Hub People I need advice on these three bikes. I liked riding bikes as a kid and I want to get back into it but i don't know what to look for. I don't know if I want to take this serious as a sport yet but i also don't want to buy trash or end up over paying for something. I'm looking for a good decent bike that if I want to get serious It wont take much to get it to a competitive place I came across a Trek 4500 for R4000 but its second hand but refurbish. A new Avalanche Reflex 29" 3 on special for like R800 more or should I save a bit more and go for the rook. Or are all 3 not what I'm looking for
  2. Good evening all I have had my E-Caliber for a month now and love it. 🥰 I have done more "analogue" rides now than e-bike rides - the reason why I bought it - to use both modes. Question : Can I enter a "race" or an "event" in "Analogue" mode? For those that do not know - you remove the motor and the battery and replace it with a hollow down tube. @chrisf and others - I will appreciate your help. Thanks Cassie
  3. Good day everyone I am on the brink of buying my third e-bike. I do 99% tar / gravel / mountain passes and 1% easy single tracks (if need to be - for medical reasons). I do 2-5 hr rides with 800-1500 m ascents. If finances were not an option, the TQ system on the Trek E-Fuel would have been my first choice. But, I can get a good deal on an E-Caliber (with the Fazua system) Does anybody with any negative comments about the E-Caliber or the Fazua system at all? My friends are very happy with their bikes - I am just checking throughout the community for warnings - especially the Fazua motor / battery? Thank you in advance - baie dankie. Cassie
  4. The Trek Supercaliber was shrouded in secrecy during the 2019 XCO season. Now, the tape (literally) has been cut and the out-and-out race bike is clear for all to see. Is it a bike for hardtail die-hards or does it have dual purpose use? We aimed it at the Western Cape’s trails to find out. Click here to view the article
  5. Press Release – Trek has launched the all-new Fuel EXe e-mountain bike today, championing a whole new category in the mountain bike world. While other electric bikes chase more power and bigger batteries, Fuel EXe is refined with mid-level assist from a system that’s so compact, light and quiet, it’s barely noticeable. It effortlessly blends […] View full article
  6. Trek launched the all-new Madone SLR today, topping off their performance bike line-up with their fastest road race bike ever. Seven generations in the making, the Madone SLR is the ultimate race bike, complete with never-before-seen IsoFlow technology, dramatic aerodynamic improvements and an all-new gram-shaving design. This completely redesigned race bike will be ridden by […] View full article
  7. Hi all, can anyone with the same or similar bike confirm if there are bushes in between the rocker and frame? Think the previous owner might have lost them. Doesn't make sense that there wouldn't be any bushes in there, swingarm moves without them and scared of tightening the bolt without bushes in case something snaps. Can someone confirm? See pictures to see what I mean.
  8. Hi, I'm looking to buy a new mountain bike for the first time. My budget is up to R20k, but I have already looked at a few bikes and made a list of my favourites. I have looked at a few bikes within my budget including the Giant Talon 0 (2021), Trek Marlin 8 (2022), Specialized Rockhopper Expert (2021) and Silverback Stride SX (2021). These four bikes are my top picks, but I lean towards the Marlin 8 and Talon 0 more. Does anyone have any advice between these two bikes? I will use the bike for commuting and some off-road riding over weekends, so currently it looks like it might come down to external looks, brand preference and warranty as I won't be pushing the bike to its limits anytime soon, but that might change over time. If I go with the Talon 0 I will upgrade the tires to tubeless tires, so it will cost a bit more than the Marlin 8.
  9. Trek Supercaliber 9.9 My SUPERCALIBER 9.9 came into my life during a crazy time!! After merely two rides on it, I had a road bike accident and had to stay off the bike for two months, to recover from a severe elbow injury. Initially I had to approach my riding VERY CAREFULLY. For quite a while I did not have the strength to lean on my right arm at all. Slowly but surely my strength increased and as I dared more, my SUPERCALIBER started showing off. Giving me the best "WELCOME BACK TO RIDING" I could ask for. Coming from a TREK TOP FUEL 9.9 (2019), I did not know what to expect from my new bike, I loved the Top Fuel and had a 100% podium record on it. First thing I noticed was that these two bikes had a completely different feel even if you just ride around your neighbourhood. 1. IT IS FAST! Notably faster! There is absolutely no loss of power when you step on the pedals, everything you put in gets rewarded. To take it a step further the dual lockout system makes this bike come to life! I just lock out my shocks on a smooth climb and WHALLAH, rocket mode "ON" ???? 2. IT HANDLES OBSTACLES LIKE A DUAL SUSPENSION. Because the SUPERCALIBER has less travel in the rear shock (coming from 100mm rear travel to the merely 60mm Isostrut system) , I was a bit sceptical when it came to obstacles. Would I be able to be confident over the rocks, drops and jumps and what it would feel like? What a revelation! When it comes to jumps, it floats like an airplane and landing it is really smooth. The slack head angle does an amazing job down drops, rocks and steep descents. Easy to steer and very reluctant to throw you over the bars if you keep to the rules of basic skills. 3. IT'S REALLY, REALLY LIGHT The weight of this bike is probably its biggest advantage. With race ready sealant in the wheels and pedals on, my bike weighed in on 9.4kg. In other words, it is a pleasure to climb to the top of the mountain. During testing it on various mountain passes, I've set PR's every time, even while I wasn't in top shape during my recovery period. In conclusion..... Every time I ride, I smile at the top and and the bottom of the mountain. The only down side of the SUPERCALIBER is that it is difficult to not talk about the riding pleasure during the ride and you can easily drive your mates crazy. Thus also the reason why I've decided to share my experience online. No one asked, and I'm not getting paid to say nice things. It's just my honest opinion. Suggestions--- A bicycle like the SUPERCALIBER is built for optimum speed and I would suggest that you make sure that your bike setup is done properly without compromising the way the bicycle is built. In my opinion the shock pressure and rebound should be precisely set according to factory suggestions in order to get the most out of it.... DON'T FORGET THAT TYRE PRESSURE PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN YOUR RIDING AND CORNERING EXPERIENCE. The SUPERCALIBER 9.9 is the perfect race bike for me, and if you keep to its design, you'll be going faster than ever before! Though it is a pricey bicycle, it's definitely a huge benefit as a race bike. If you're thinking of buying it for racing or enjoyment, your expectations will be met!!

  11. Hi, just want to get opinions on something. I bought a 2nd hand 2019 Trek Fuel EX7 last year, and there was a bit of damage to the rear triangle with stone chips and scratches etc. Didnt think anything more about it. Decided recently to have the rear triangle resprayed. First day back out on the trails the chain appears to have not released from the chain ring, and taken out a nasty gash out of the aluminium right at the chain ring. Chain has less than 500km. Patch job 2 with some protective tape and now today same thing. Sram NX There is obviously a problem. Any ideas on how to get it sorted before patch job 3 commences?
  12. Trek launched an all-new Émonda road bike today. The latest Émonda is focussed on aerodynamic efficiency while improving on the lightweight climbing ambitions of the previous Émonda models. In fact, Trek claim a rider holding a constant 350 watts will be 15 seconds faster up the iconic Alpe d'Huez over the previous Émonda. There will be two Émonda frame specification levels, the SLR and SL. Both frames are identically shaped, meaning there is no difference in aerodynamics efficiency and geometry. The range topping SLR frame uses Trek's new 800 Series OCLV Carbon with a frame weight dipping under 700 grams. The more affordable SL frame is constructed from 500 Series OCLV Carbon with a claimed frame weight of 1142 grams but offers all the same aerodynamic and handling gains. Accompanying the launch of the latest Émonda are new Aeolus aerodynamic wheels and Aeolus RSL bar/stem combo that cleans up the cockpit. In South Africa, we'll have access to the Émonda SLR frame through the Project One customisation programme. On the shop floor you'll find the Émonda SL7 and SL6 Pro models. Read the press release below for all the details on the all-new Émonda. Click here to view the article

  17. Couldn't find a thread for TREK MTB owners, so here it is! I've been on a Superfly 100 AL Elite since June last year and it's pretty much been bulletproof apart from a rear shock leak. I have a 45-50 seeding index, so I'm no speedster, but it serves me well, and passes a lot of carbon things along the way. Post up your technical advice and maintenance knowledge here.
  18. I've got an older TREK Fuel EX trail-ish bike which I absolutely love, but I cannot find any decent 26" tires for it anywhere. Does anyone know where in the Gauteng region I can find decent 26" tires (don't say crossmark plz). Specifically looking for front tires currently. Used to run Specialized Eskars (26 x 2.3) but I've torn a few of them to shreds now. Tubeless obviously. Any help much appreciated, thanks
  19. Since there is no fan page for the '17/18 Fuel EX, I though I would get one started. I'm saving up for the 2018 Fuel EX 8 - GX Eagle build and would appreciate everyone's opinions. Does anyone have one yet? The first shipment landed in SA two weeks ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyOvxvbP300 https://www.trekbikes.com/za/en_ZA/bikes/mountain-bikes/trail-mountain-bikes/fuel-ex/fuel-ex-8-29/p/2140690-2018/?colorCode=grey
  20. Hi I'm planning another 6 to 10 day MTB Trek with some overseas friends. I want to cycle from point A to B to C etc. I've done Humansdorp to Calitzdorp to Matjiesriver into Die Hel, over Die Leer to Boschluyskloof and down Seweweekspoort. Anyone done any similar treks in the Overberg, Karoo or Baviaanskloof areas with some recommendations? As little tarmac as possible please Thanks Jaco
  21. Hello everyone, I want to do a long distance bicycle tour around South Africa and possibly into Africa, i am in the process at looking at different bicycles including the Surly Disc trucker, Salsa Marrakesh, Kona Sutra, Trek 920 and Soma Saga. There is a lot of information about these bicycles online but it is difficult to find any of them in South Africa. Can anyone point me in the direction of the agents or can anyone recommend a different brand that can be locally sourced and that will manage my requirements of loaded touring. TIA
  22. I currently have a hardtail XC bike but want to buy a bike more suitable for Enduro. I have narrowed my choices down to either the Trek Fuel EX, Trek Slash (alu) or Specialized Stumpjumper ST (2019). The Trek Fuel EX 8 (2017) and the Trek Fuel EX 7 (2019) cost exactly the same and the major differences as far as I can see are the front forks and drivetrain , Fox Rhythm 34 Float, Shimano Deore XT M8000, 11 speed for the EX 8, vs the Rockshox Reba RL, SRAM NX Eagle , 12 speed for the EX 7. https://www.trekbikes.com/za/en_ZA/bikes/mountain-bikes/trail-mountain-bikes/fuel-ex/fuel-ex-7-29/p/23590/ https://www.trekbikes.com/za/en_ZA/bikes/mountain-bikes/trail-mountain-bikes/fuel-ex/fuel-ex-8-29/p/17017/ Any thoughts on the choice between the two? Not sure if the Trek Slash Alu frames will be available in South Africa. Any advice or suggestions regarding the bikes will be appreciated
  23. Hi everyone! I'm in the process of replacing my bike and I am completely stuck with a decision between the Trek Top Fuel 9.8 and the Santa Cruz Blur S build. They are very similarly priced, weigh almost exactly the same (websites) and have very similar components. The Trek has carbon wheels, handlebar and seat-post, but an alu chainstay. The Santa has a complete carbon frame, but alu wheels, handlebar and seat-post. Any advice, suggestions or feedback regarding the bikes would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
