  2. Not since Yolande Speedy, in 2013, has a South African woman stood upon the top step of the Absa Cape Epic podium. In recent years, Robyn de Groot, Mariske Strauss and Candice Lill have had shots at the title, though all three came up short. Due to the fact that Cycling South Africa (CSA) is not in a position to contribute towards the travel costs of riders that have been selected to compete at at the UCI World MTB Champs in Cairns, Australia, the selected athletes are required to self-fund the trip. The Western Province Mountain Biking Commission (WPMTBC) has decided to contribute R30 000 towards the WC cyclists’ costs to attend the World Champs and are offering cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to contribute as well, and stand a chance to win a SRAM Eagle GX upgrade kit sponsored by Cape Cycle Systems. Cross-country specialists Philip Buys and Mariske Strauss and multiple Downhill National Champion Tiaan Odendaal and Kim Westbrook claimed the Elite Men and Women’s Continental Titles in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho last week for the 2016 African Continental Mountain Bike Championships at the Afriski Resort from Tuesday 29 March to Sunday 3 April, where over 100 riders from South Africa competed in the various races.
