Hi Guys, Since 2020 has all around made for a bit of a disaster, and I have currently got nothing but time on my hands for most of the rest of the year, I thought it might be a good idea to use that time to do something constructive, instead of wallow in the sorrows, moaning about what 2020 should have been, and while at it, why not try raise some funds for a charity that supports people who really know what suffering is, and who have also lost most of their sources of funding during this time. So, take a look here for all the details: https://adventurelogistics.co.za/echo/ and visit the backabuddy page here if you feel like you can afford to donate a few bucks: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/enduring-4-echo-youth The ride: You can get a much more detailed description on the webpage in the link above, but the ride is essentially a 1000km ride, starting at the Seal Point Lighthouse in St Francis on the 6th of December, going through the Baviaanskloof, then on towards Uniondale, dropping down the Montagu Pass to George, then making its way through to Stillbaai, following the route of our Hessequa/Overberg MTB Adventure to Stanford, from where it heads to the mountains again, via Franshoek to stellenbosch, and then finally into cape town to finish at Cape point, somewhere between 10 and 14 days later. The Cause: The ride will be done to raise funds for Echo Youth Development, a registerd NPO and PBO that runs a number of homes for vulnerable youth across the country, as well as facilitates numerous programs to give these kids a fighting chance in life. Lockdown has seen many of their traditional funding sources dry up, and every little bit will help keep the homes running. My aim is to try and raise a minimum of R10 000.00 through this initiative - or R10.00/Km ridden. If you would like to support the cause, please make a donation via the backabuddy page.   2. Hi all. I'm new to the group. I'm currently cycle touring around South Africa and hoping that maybe someone has done a similar ride. I'm looking for a route from Johannesburg to Durban and plan to cycle it over a few days, I have found a few and have made some but not sure what they will be like and if the areas they go through are safe or not, it needs to be an alternative to the N3 as its very dangerous and I think its illegal to ride on highways here. I don't mind any distance, dirt roads, hills etc, if they include camping spots along the way then thats awesome to or I will find places to camp. I will be riding with a loaded bike and will have all my camping gear with me. Thanks for any advice, it will be highly appreciated.

  5. Was thinking of a relaxed road ride from Wellington to Ceres and back (+- 110km) Plan is to take the train from Cape Town to Wellington early one Saturday. Cycle over Bainskloof to Ceres (55km) Have lunch in Ceres. Return to Wellington. Back to Cape Town with the train. I'm keen to know what the interest is. Also, if anyone's already cycled the route any tips welcome.
  6. Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'll be visiting Cape Town mid December and would love to get a multi-day mountain bike trek in on the best trails. iRide has a cool looking multi day ride, but the price is a bit steep for me. Does anyone have suggestions for tour companies to check out? Also, instead of a multi-day ride if they are all around the same price point, I'd be interested in single day tours, but would have to rent the bike each day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Alex

  8. With the Spring Classics, and soon the Monuments, in full swing – I thought I’d squeeze in the proposed Fantasy Giro | Tour | Vuelta scoring format for 2016. The 2015 competition worked well, but rewarded riders that had a mix of riders across all the scoring categories rather than matching the real-life performance of each rider. 2016 will return to the classic format rewarding pot-luck, with a bit of insider knowledge. Points are heavily weighted in favour of the daily stages, and possible breakaways. The only other significant change will be the unlimited use of your substitutes, with the changes limited to the two rest days. A handful of Hubbers played a simplified version of the Vuelta last year, which worked well, but with riders pulling out before the World Champs (or fatigue), pot-luck played a big roll in the overall scoring. The Giro 2016 will be the test-run using the new scoring format, so you can get your picks fine-tuned before July. I’m open to suggestions, as long as it’s simple to implement, and easy to understand. The new proposal is as follows: Pick 12 riders (9 active + 3 subs)The 9 active riders will score points every day.Substitutions can only be made on the rest days.A rider previously substituted can be brought back in on the second rest day, if needed.The only time you lose a rider from your team is when he withdraws from the Tour.   9. On Thursday morning, early, we start our tour to Durban which includes riding the Amashova (day 4). Our club has done many Durban tours in the past, but we haven't done one for the last few years. This thread will be a blog about our journey from Germiston to Durban, with photos and comments from as many of the tour group as possible - some of them are hubbers (but they like to keep a low profile) - pending internet connection at our overnight spots (and my willingness to sift through photos and type up a story). One of the reasons for the tour is to raise funds for the NSPCA (our chosen charity for the 947 Cycle Challenge this year). We have setup a Back-a-buddy campaign as well as an SMS number (947-67 to 38018, @ R25/sms) for any donations. Like most others, raising funds is hard as everyone has their own preferences of where to donate (if at all). If you have already donated, we say "thanks". If not - chose from one of the two methods above and help us help the animals. The route Comprising a group of 27 (24 riders and 3 providing permanent backup), we have a mix of abilities ranging from Vets to beginners, old and young, experience and inexperienced. Very few members have cycled more than 200Km in one go, so day 1 will be a big challenge (224km) for many members. Personally, the longest ride I've done is 191Km so nailing the DC will be something I've been looking forward to ever since we started planning this tour. So far, the forecast for Thursday is looking promising... a tail wind (forecast is at Standerton - at the dam), which is 170Km into our ride. Let's see what the post-ride feedback it like. The biggest concern, I would think is this heatwave we're currently experiencing, so I'm guessing a lot of fluids will be consumed by all. Day 2 appears to be a good recovery ride, if you can call 157Km a recovery, while day 3 will be a favourite among most as we make our way through the KZN midlands before we reach PMB on Saturay afternoon. Day 4 is on the Amashova, starting in TL (for 3 of our tandems) and BB (buddy batch) for the rest. We'll be riding in club kit on Sunday, so look out for the "minions" on the road on Sunday... Three sleeps and counting...
  10. Hi guys First of all, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I will also post it in the mountain bike section as it obviously comes under both! I am looking for a mountain bike that I can use for long distance touring, on any terrain, in any conditions and in developing countries (South America). I am completely new to mountain biking / touring but I have done a bit of research and come to the conclusion that I need something with the following specs: Type: Hardtail. Frame: Steel - can be welded if broken or Aluminium Wheel size: 26" - availability in developing countries; strength carrying a load. Brakes: Disk (provided I can fit equipment for carrying luggage etc.)-- Mechanical if possible but otherwise hydrolic. Any recommendations? Thanks

  12. Hi All We a group of cyclist training for the Cape Town cycle tour. We cycle every Saturday sometimes on a Sunday as well.   14. I paid for my entry and accomodation today. It is my first road multiday event. How does it differ in planning and training to a multistage MTB event? Tips and comments for a noob?
