  1. So entries are opening in less than two weeks for next years event. September entries for locals R380 and from October R420 Are there any newbies contemplating doing the down run?Are there any experienced runners who can help the novices out with trying to balance riding and running training without loosing your family?
  2. Gents I need some of your expert advice. Myself and two mates are training for our very first Trans Baviaans in August this year. We are fairly fit. 2 of us did a 153km (2000m elevation) Fund Raiser ride a month ago and found it fairly comfortable with an average speed of just over 21kmph. Having a business to run and a wife with 4 children means training time requires planning. At the moment I am able to put in around 10 hours a week on average. That is 2-3 rides in the week with one longer ride on the weekend. Now as winter draws closer its going to get more challenging but I will cross that as it comes. My question to you is: what sort of training should we focusing on now??? We are doing the Around The Pot 100miler event in July. Any advice would be most appreciated.
  3. Hi Guys, just some pics we took at the race registration last week --- so awesome to see the amount of VIPA's ( some old, some new ) on the startline. well done to all the riders -- each and every one of you are LEGENDS!!!! interesting to note how the bike setups have evolved over the past 3 years in terms of setup / bags / cockpit etc. please feel free to add to this thread if you rode the event or even just have a VIPA . we love seeing our bikes being put to good use like this!!!
  4. Event Name: Trans Xhariep 2020 When: 29 February 2020 - 1 March 2020 Where: Gariep Forever Resort, Freestate Category: MTB The Free State’s very own Ultra Marathon MTB event. Are you brave enough to take on the Ultra (315km) or is the Lite (147km) more your style? Learning form previous events, we have made a few changes to the 2020 event. Changes include: 7 Big Check points for Ultra Riders, with loads to eat and drink. Ice and fresh fruit. Start Time Change for both Ultra and Lite distances Less Crates on route More and better indicated unmanned water points on route Reduced event entry price New route for the Lite distance, with start/finish at Gariep Dam We are extremely excited about the fantastic growth of this event over the last few years and look forward to growing the event to into one of the Bucket List events on the South African Calendar. If you think your tough, Think again before entering the Ultra in 2020. The Free State is not as easy as you might think. The Free State is wild, unexplored and mostly used as a stop over for families traveling to their chosen destination. The Free State is also Beautiful, friendly and generous. Take it on with your bike and it becomes an even better adventure. Its not always about the destination, its always about the journey of getting there and the Trans Xhariep is no different. With the perfect combination of jeep track, farm roads, gravel and tar sections the journey between the Gariep dam and Vanderkloof Dam becomes all the more worth it. Experience the Free State like never before. Have a look at the beautiful scenery the Xhariep region has on offer and enjoy the fabulous check points with local flavor everywhere you look. Stop and have a swim, wave to a friendly farmer passing by and remember to take a selfie for good measure. #RideTheStates #ItsAllAboutTheJourney #RideTheStates Go to Event Page
  5. Really interesting study on the supposedly finite limit for human endurance based on ultra runners and TdF cyclists. The cap is 2.5 times the body's resting metabolic rate, or 4,000 calories a day for an average person, based on 20 day plus to 140 day efforts . Pregnant women are almost operating on the limit! https://www.bbc.com/news/health-48527798
  6. https://bikerumor.com/2018/11/19/momsen-builds-a-special-bike-for-munga-full-suspension-drop-bar-vipa-ultra/ Anyone who has been on the bike through the 90's would immediatelly appreciate the throwback, especially if you knew the man that designed it's own long standing appreciation for the influence a certain Mr. Johnny T had on our sport. My opinion is that this bike is the best of everything you could need for something like the Munga. Dual sus. Aero features. LITRES of drink storage and tons of onboard storage as well. Planned by Victor Momsen and assembled by Robbie Powell and his team who is a legend in his own right. Sho... This bike gives me... feelings. Unsure how something so modern can unearth that "old school" feeling as well at the same time. http://thebodymechanic.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/MTB3.jpg
