Cannondale Weight reduction

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! Could anyone please advise on how to make this bike lighter, without robbing a bank? Specs are as follows:

Cannondale Scalpel Ultimate 2011 frame

Fox loat RP23 rearshock

Lefty Speed Carbon DLR 110mm

Thomson Elite seatpost (31.6mmx410mm)

Selle Italia SLR Saddle

Cannondale Carbon SI cranks (manufactured by FSA) with BBB chainrings

Shimano XTR cluster

Shimano XTR chain

SRAM X.0 Jockey

SRAM X.0 gripshifts

SRAM X.7 front derailleur direct mount

Look Quarts Carbon Ti pedals

Shimano XTR M975 wheelset with Shimano Lefty hub on the front wheel

Schwalbe Rocket Ron non UST 26x2.10 tire @ the front

Rubena Charybdis Tubeless Supra 26x2.00 tyre @ the back

Shimano XTR M975 Hydraulic Disc brakes with XTR pads and discs.

Weight: one scale say 9.96kg, while another says 9.52kg. Thinking that 9.52kg sounds more accurate!

Wondered if anyone can help me to find ways to lighten this bike, without spending a lot of cash. Please advise

Thanks!

wow, looks like you already robbed a bank! Nice bike!

I would say you could save a bit of weight on the brakeset and wheels, but from the weight you're at now, anything is going to cost a lot.

cut your seatpost down from 410mm to minimum length will save a few grammes

Lighter wheels.

Custom Build DT Swiss 240s hubs on ZTR Alpine rims.

Your other bet is to buy a SRAM 2x10 Groupset and sell this one of as spares.

Swap your brakes out for Formula R1's.

Configure your rotors for 160 in front and 140 at the back.

Maybe a ligter seat post if you can find one in that length. Lighter Handlebar.

Unfortunately, in cycling less is more.

The Cannondale carbon crank is a pig in terms of weight. Cannondale Hollowgram SISL crank is a lot lighter, by several hundred grams.

While you are at it, go for a 2x9 drivetrain, or 2x10 if you can spend more.

The Stans Notubes MMX Podium wheels are a lot cheaper now (+/- R 6K) and will save you 300g over the XTRs. They are available with a lefty hub.

A full XX grouppo will save a few hundred grams

Lightweight wheels I built for my Scalpel:

From CRC:

ZTR Crest Rims R625 Each

Hope Pro 2 Evo Disc Rear From R1350

DT Swiss Revolution spokes for each wheel R300

Prices approx, Ex VAT & Shipping

I've used Project 321 Lefty Hub sourced direct $130 plus hub cap bolt kit $30

Cannondale Hollowgram crankset is very expensive if you can find one - Truvativ Noir is 800g

Sell what you have and buy a Scalpel Ultimate.....may work out cheaper ;)

When i upgraded from my sram/xtr/gripshift 2X9 groupset to full XX i lost a huge 70g so do your homework before you spend cash.Go 2x9 keep the gripshift and change as much as you can to kcnc.#My 2c

How much does this bike weigh that you're looking to trim some more fat?!? Is this the first known-case of bike anorexia?? :)

Seriously though - sweet bike man. Forget bout the potential 200g and rest assured that your dual suspension is lighter than most of the hardtails out there!

The Thomson seatpost is not the lightest out there but it is very strong. You can loose about 100g if you go to KCNC or maybe even 150g if you get a Tune.

Formula R1 brakes

Are R1's actually lighter?

If I've got it right thr R1's are 261g with upgraded levers while the Old Shimano XTR M975 is 217g standard!

How much does that carbon crank weigh? Do you maybe know?
