Shimano Octalink V1 and V2 compatibility

Does anyone know if you can mix and match Shimano Octalink V1 and V2 parts? I've got an old XTR crankset I want to put on an old school rebuild that I am doing. However the BB that it came with is for 68mm bottom bracket width and I need one for a 73mm bottom bracket width. The XTR cranks use V1 octalink bb, but they seem very hard to find, or very expensive if you do find one. The V2 octalink bb's seem much more readily available. Can I use a V2 octalink bb with my XTR cranks?

Octalink was one of Shimano's big follies.

The two versions are not compatible. Bite the bullet and buy a new one, because it was never licensed, you can buy a Shimano one or a Shimano one.

Hope you come right! I didn't even know that there were two versions of octalink

I didn't either until I started trying to find another BB for my frame!

Thanks Johan - that is what I was afraid of, but thought I would check just in case I could get away with using a V2 BB.
