Dirtopia MTB Events Posted June 21, 2011 Share Event Name: THE STAALWATER MTB CHALLENGEWhen: 10 September 2011Where: The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa. Caledon, Overberg, Western CapeCategory: MTBTHE STAALWATER MTB CHALLENGE10 September 2011 Venue: The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa. Caledon, Overberg.Distances: 60km, 30km & 15kmStart times: 09h00 (60km), 09h15 (30km), 09h30 (15km) The restorative powers of Caledon's hot springs have been renowned for centuries and on 10 September mountain bikers can enjoy these mineral-rich waters after taking part in the new Staalwater event. With three route options, the event offers something from beginners to fit riders. Dirtopia always promises a fun day out– make sure you are at the lucky draw and entertainment at the casino afterwards. Meurant Botha from Amarider has worked in close association with the Theewaterskloof Municipality to develop the area as a mountain bike destination in the future, but for now please do not attempt to ride the routes outside of the event window. Routes:The 60km route of the Staalwater Challenge is a mix of private farms and district dirt roads and is only available as a complete option on the day of the event.Staal water (Steel/Iron Water) refers to the hot springs at our start location. The route offers just under 1000m of vertical elevation and it is expected to be a fast ride with a winning time of less than 2 hours. The start location is at Caledon Casino and Spa from where riders will travel in the direction of Tesselaarsdal and the lowest point of the route from here riders will climb up the pass (short tar section) before heading back into the farms and heading home. The 30km option at the Staalwater Challenge takes riders to the well-known Voorhoede Farm for a very scenic route with just over 550m of vertical elevation. As with the 60km option, riders start and finish at the Caledon Casino and Spa. Note: As with the 60km route, the route traverses private land and is only available as an 'on event day" option. We are however working to create a permanent route in this area so watch this space! The 15km is a short-cut loop of the 30km and is flat - perfect for beginners, kids and families that just want to enjoy the beautiful area in spring.Entries open 1 August and pre-entries close on Monday 05 September, so get your entries in to save some bucks! GLuvsMtb Posted June 21, 2011 Share I did this race last year. Not very technical and was indeed very fast. Caledon Spa was a great venue and the orginising was of a high standard.

hayleyearth Posted August 10, 2011 Share I want some feedback from the peeps who did the 60km... I think it is time to step-up from the 40-50kms and take on this 60km. Or is it a killer? 'GO BIG OR STAY HOME' I think must be my motto for this one

'GO BIG OR STAY HOME' I think must be my motto for this one This is the easiest 60km route on the calender, so if u want to up the distance this would be perfect for u, its way easier than other races eg my time for the 60km was 2h 50, my time for the burger 60km was 3h55 so there u go. GLuvsMtb Posted August 10, 2011 Share If its a nice day, the 60 will take the average rider under 3h to do. The route is fast and relatively flat (I recall 1 steepish hill that required the small blade). Work with the riders around you, much like a road race and you'll be fine. It would be interesting if Dirtopia are doing some single track sections for the race this year. There are a few places that had potential for some single track development on last year's route.
