Which MTB to buy?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and Mountain Biking. I'm planning on buying my first MTB soon and I've come up with a few options as I have a budget of +- R4500. Wouldn't really want to cross R4500 mark though

Here they are:

1) Scott Aspect 30

2) Specialized HardRock Pro Disc

3) Giant Talon 3

4) GT Avalanche 2.0 Hydraulic Disc

5) Merida tfs 100d

I would like Hydraulic Disc Brakes standard and no softails mtb's .

If there's any other suggestions, let me know...

how about something in full suspension?

Would you be able to find another 7-8k?

Giant Anthem X3 - around 12-13k

Giant Trance X4 - around 10-11k

You would never look back after buying full sus.....

Nice bike only a little on the heavy side...

Heavy is always a good idea when starting out. So what if it weighs like 15kg's, that bike will need to be able to take a big bashing for starters.tongue.gif

And there will be so much more weight to save when a lighter bike is bought.drool.gif

I can't spend more than 5k, so no full suspension. I don't really like Silverback

Which of these mtb's above has the lightest frame?

Why don't you like silverback?huh.gif

Scott is probably the lightest frame.

Silverback just doesn't have that aesthetic appeal to me IMO

That I understand.

Silverback is like the underdog, best feeling when you zip past guys on their stumpy's or other high end bikes.

I think in that price range aesthetics should be your last priority, with function and bang for buck as the strongest selling points.

If you like the sport( probably get addicted to), I guarantee you would upgrade within a year. Then weight and aesthetics becomes somewhat of a higher priority.

That's my opinion.

What is important is that you are happy with what you ride, and that you made the best possible choice with regards to your options and budget.

Too many people get stuck in what's the lightest and what brand bike and so forth.

Another important point is to actually try out as many of the bikes in the price range to see what feels right, the stickers on the side of the frame won't help with that.

Reading reviews on mtbr and bikeradar is also good starting points.

Rather enjoy riding for what it's worth, not what brand you ride.wink.gif

PS. I'm a big Scott fan and own a Spark which I love to pieces.
