Wouldn't really want to cross R4500 mark though Here they are:1) Scott Aspect 302) Specialized HardRock Pro Disc3) Giant Talon 34) GT Avalanche 2.0 Hydraulic Disc5) Merida tfs 100d I would like Hydraulic Disc Brakes standard and no softails mtb's .If there's any other suggestions, let me know... Dubber88 Posted June 26, 2011 Share Nice bike only a little on the heavy side... Heavy is always a good idea when starting out. So what if it weighs like 15kg's, that bike will need to be able to take a big bashing for starters. And there will be so much more weight to save when a lighter bike is bought. Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted June 26, 2011 Share Silverback Phoenix. +1. Solid bike, and at that price point you'll never get a light-as-feathers frame & parts list. Upgradeable as feck though...
heed0 Posted June 26, 2011 Share I can't spend more than 5k, so no full suspension. I don't really like Silverback Which of these mtb's above has the lightest frame? Edited June 26, 2011 by heed0

Scott is probably the lightest frame. Edited June 26, 2011 by Dubber88
heed0 Posted June 26, 2011 Share Silverback just doesn't have that aesthetic appeal to me IMO Edited June 26, 2011 by heed0

Dubber88 Posted June 26, 2011 Share Silverback just doesn't have that aesthetic appeal to me IMO That I understand. Silverback is like the underdog, best feeling when you zip past guys on their stumpy's or other high end bikes. I think in that price range aesthetics should be your last priority, with function and bang for buck as the strongest selling points. If you like the sport( probably get addicted to), I guarantee you would upgrade within a year. Then weight and aesthetics becomes somewhat of a higher priority. That's my opinion. What is important is that you are happy with what you ride, and that you made the best possible choice with regards to your options and budget. Too many people get stuck in what's the lightest and what brand bike and so forth. Another important point is to actually try out as many of the bikes in the price range to see what feels right, the stickers on the side of the frame won't help with that. Reading reviews on mtbr and bikeradar is also good starting points. Rather enjoy riding for what it's worth, not what brand you ride. PS. I'm a big Scott fan and own a Spark which I love to pieces.
