To build a bike you will need:

Torque wrench and bits

Cable cutters

BB cub tool

Grease/carbon paste.

To service a bike you will need additional:

Cone spanners

bleed kit

big ass socket for the fork (think it's a 26)

Nothing wrong with a multitool. I do most of my stuff with one. Can't be bothered dragging the toolbox out from under the stairs.

Get a set of (Stanley) Allen & Torq keys from Builders warehouse for a start.

Also a mallet (soft head)

Set of spanners are a good investment. Gedore not the cheapest but will last a life time. Other el-cheapo Chrome Vanadium sets going, but buy at your own peril. You can get a very good Gedore tool box for about R2500.

Park Tool or BB Spanners as needed (Pedal, BB)

Cable cutters are a must.

I just built up a MTB which I recieved from CRC in about 6 parcels.

I needed a Crank Bros Multi Tool (which nicely fits in cycling shirt pocket), a Hollow BB tool, plastic tire levers and a cable cutter .

Thats all you need.

It's actually better to buy your tools as you need them. You'll pay less for the non cycling specific tools by going to Builders etc. Only buy the best if you can afford it.

Save up and buy a decent digital torque wrench.

I think the duty on tools is 40% so do your homework!

Rather buy the tools individually.

There are several on those kits that you don't need or won't use. (the cheaper kits often use bad quality materials, so you chuck 1/2 of it away)

Park Tool is not the most well priced brand, so shop around and you dont have to buy cycling specific brands either - allan keys, screw drivers, pliers, spanners etc.

If you are going to do this often and be serious about it, get a torque wrench.

A workstand does make life easier.

Add some music and beer to your shopping list.

This is my bicycle workshop and general workshop, as you can see from the different brands I bought as I needed them. I started with a no 13 Gedore socket in 1972. Stay away from the kits. I was still busy unpacking the tools in our new home and all are not placed yet.

Anyone care to add to this?

Torque wrench and sockets

BB tools

Cassette tools

I think that will kill the R1200 budget and will still need a cable cutter

my budged for the month for my tools is about R1200 .. how far up the hill will that get me ?

I was stingy when I bought my first tools. I have junked them since and bought better quality tools ideally suited for the job. Do not make that mistake and rather buy the CORRECT items in increments. You will not reggret that.

What is your first priorities with bike repairs or service?
