Shimano rear hub modification

Have a set of Shimano FHM495 which have given me many years of good trainig miles. Maintain a grease regularly but surprised at all the much that gets into bearings. Has anyone give thought of replacing those metal dome like cover things on both sides, that are suppose to "seal" between fixed part of cone and rotaing part, with some decent rubber compression seals. The outside diameter needs to be such that it fits securely into free body and inside diameter needs to fit and seal over cone body. Sure if I could reduce muck getting in I could reduce maintenace cycle.

Any thoughts ?

Not too sure what you are exactly referring to...but what about a blob of plain old silicone sealer?? Could be pulled off quite easily if it sticks to the metal part(s)...

I am sure some Heath Robinson remedy is possible but if there was a better solution the Shimano R&D dept would have implemented it.

The rubber seal could trap dirt in the grease (which works its way out) and act as a grinding paste on the rotating axle.

 

Saw this on a rubber cover over a disk brake lever push rod, almost ate it clean through.

 

Is just a theory though.
