Tyre choice for XC beginner

My wife is about to start mountain biking - we're currently building her up a hardtail around a 2011 Silverback Phoenix frame. I need to slap on new tyres and I'm looking for something affordable and light, that'll roll fast over tame trails (jeep track, etc) but still have fair grip for some singletrack (which she'll only do a little bit of at first).

My first thought was the Kenda small block eight, 2.1. Any other suggestions?

Oh, no :(

You mentioned tyres and rolls fast in the same post. Oh dear.

is this another hub etiquette issue i've missed? I've already taken my bar ends off my riser bar, so don't be too harsh...

Cross Marks.

Good for everything, brilliant at nothing. They last forever too.

Not my favourite but he's right. A good tyre to start off with.

no no no, its simple. Pedal faster, tyre moves faster, and rolls faster. Really Bob.

Or Larsens. Very tough and when they want to ride on the road it is not too energy sapping either.

Crossmark are cool on hard stuff. Not so good in mud and on slippery surfaces.

I also like Larsen as well.

Try and get the wirebead ones if you are not bothered about going tubeless, can save you a good couple of pennies!

All I can ever find at my LBS with either of my choices are 2.1's.

2.1 inch diameter? Are you using them for fairy wheels?
