Ironman 70.3 Antwerp was overshadowed by the death of competitor Artur Aghajanyan. Aghajanyan, aged 26, crashed on his bike at around 13:30 local time on the high speed descent of the Antwerp Waaslandtunnel, suffering a massive head trauma.

Witnesses to the accident reported that Aghajanyan was taking a drink at the time and lost control at over 40km/h.

Despite the best attempts of the local paramedics who were on the scene immediately, they were unable to resuscitate Aghajanyan and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The WTC has issued the following statement: “We acknowledge and are deeply saddened by the death of triathlete Arthur Aghajanyan at Ironman 70.3 Antwerp today. On behalf of all of us in the triathlon community, we mourn his death and send condolences to his loved ones.”

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
