Best way to polish old components

I have several components that have been lying in the garage for years and now look a bit dull. What is the best way to polish them, without damaging or corroding them? The parts include cranksets, brake calipers and derailleurs.

I used to use an metal polish called Autosol on my motorbike sparkly bits, maybe that would work? Buy it at Midas.

Builders wharehouse did a paste and polish cloth that fitted onto a drill. That worked quite well when i did some stuff a while back.

alot of parts have a clear coat over them to protect them from tarnishing. You can't polish them without removing the clear coat. Then you will have to continue to polish them to keep them shiny.

I did the same to my Jeff Jones XTR crank mod.
