post-12957-0-26596600-1312181963.jpgA week ago, I slipped while getting of my rollers and fractured L1 & L4 in my back!! 6 weeks in bed, at least 8 weeks off from work (self-employed) and 3 months off the bike!!!!

Lesson learnt....... do not use rollers on a slippery surface!

You still very lucky bud, I have had two spinal fusions due to a combination of motor bike accidents, running and general degeneration, one in my lower back and one in my neck, you could say I stand VERY upright now. :D

When I had my lumbar fusion I was in a brace for 6 months, I could not sit for 6 months, either lay down or stand, its serious, serious, serious, stuff mate, you dont want to go there, take the time and recover.

Did you see a neurosurgeon or a orthopaedic surgeon as well? If you haven't seen a neuro yet, GO now, and get his opinion, a fracture is serious stuff, having a really good neuro specialist look at as well as an orthopaedic surgeon is essential in my opinion.

Consulted with a Orthopaedic and Neurosurgeon. Follow up in PTA 2 weeks from now with a specialist Spinal Orthopaedic Surgeon. Fracture seems to be stable....

I cracked and moved L5 vertebra during cycling accident in 1997. Back has deteriorated so much that I do not walk or stand for long times due to pinched nerve in left leg (cannot walk for 500m without pain). I tied to avoid operation for years, but it seems that my time is coming for fussion of L4, L5 and S1.

I have just been through the same thing, (T11 and T12) only the cause was from a mtb. I am going to the morningside sports (Exercise solutions) clinic and doing rehab with sport physiologists, movements specialists and and ortho.

Recovery is going well and should be riding by next year. hopefully.

my 2 cents worth

Any advice?? How mobile were you during first few weeks? Bedridden?

Good luck with recovery!

Yes, rollers. Bought it a week before to train on with my road bike. Was just beginning to feel comfortable on it.....

Yeah, I had pretty much the same, my left leg was so weak due to the pinched nerves I could not depress the clutch pedal in my bakkie, folk cant believe it but there you go, its a rough op surfer, I went to a wonderful neurosurgeon who I thank God daily for sending me there, he tried everything conservatively before he said "thats it, now we just gotta go in" - he then gave me three choices, "I can go home fetch my bag and tomorrow we operate, or I can book in now and tomorrow we operate or I can go home and be back at 5am, tomorrow we operate" - the actual spinal work is not painful strangely enough and you have almost immediate relief from the pinched nerves, but because they go in through the front, stomach area, they move all your internal organs around and that WAS the most painful.

Recovery is slow, but you gotta do it, I have made a 95% recovery, I dont have as much mobility as before obviously and looking backwards is difficult but I can do almost anything I want now, I just have to be extra careful, he says if I fall and break the fusion there's a very real chance I could be in a wheelchair, so fast bunch riding is not something I participate in anymore. :D
