Does anyone know where I can get some brake disc shims in Joburg?

Its prob not the shim that you need - just the re-alignment of the pistons.

Check that both piston protrude and equal amount out from the caliper in order to get your caliper centralized.

If one sticks out further that the other it might also be a sticky piston.

Move both piston all the way back in the caliper and then check the movement as you squeeze the lever.

You`ll prob find one moves fast and the other almost nothing - that means it is sticky.

Try taking the pads out and cleaning outside of the piston with a degreaser en lightly lubing it.

Check if both pistons move equally now - if not, send it in for a seal kit replacement.

Its prob Avid, right?

Thanks Vinny. The brakes are Shimano SLX BTW. It seems like the caliper can't move inboard enough, so I'd like to bring the rotor out a bit. I will check the pistons though, but it looks like it's just an alignment issue.

You could also use simple washers from your Hardware store if needed.

They are pretty cheap and come in all diff sizes.

Take a look.

Hope you come right.

Cheers

Too thick. You need about 0.1-0.2mm shims.

Those things are to put between the disc and the three sided Shimano bolt. You bend over the edges so that the bolts don't go loose. You will have to put the raised edges over the bolt flanges (away from the disc) if you would want to use them as shims.

cool, thanks for that! I just had them lying around... had never used them so just figured they were shims.

But yeah, Divernick, they're yours for free if you want them.

I got 12 small steel washers from Builder's Warehouse for 40c and used one on each bolt hole and.....

Perfect! No disc wobble or pad rub.

Thanks for everyone's input!
