Cycling along the N2 to caledon

How far are cyclists allowed on the N2. I know its safe up to grabouw - we normally ride that as part of 4 passes. How much further are cyclists allowed on the road? Can one cycle all the way to caledon? Riviersonderend?

well.... technically speaking, cyclists are not supposed to be on the national road....but then again, we are cyclists.

The road from the Hermanus turnoff is OK as far as I can remember (which is a bit fuzzy), but it is a risk you take if you want to go that route....

btw what is in Caledon that you want to go see? it's one of those towns you can drive past without knowing it is actually there.... unless you are going to the spa and casino

I might be wrong, but I don't think this is correct. Cyclists are not allowed on freeways, be they national roads or not. E.g. the M1 is not a national road, but you can't go cycling along it.

Yeah, I agree - there are M roads in CT that are not supposed to be cycled on either - there are portions of the M3 and M5 that are freeways, i.e. no cyclists.

My post is more directed to the route that fand want's to ride on

I have never been into Caledon in my life

I have driven past there a zillion times

I only know about it because I had family living there at one point.... they have since relocated to norther suburbs of CT  Nice quiet town to cycle in - I remember cycling on the dirt roads up to the farms on my BMX. ah, those were the days

I have ridden over Houw Hoek outbound without a hassle. On audax rides we've ridden both ways on the stretch of 7 km or so from Bot River to the R43 turnoff to Villiersdorp.

So, I can't imagine that riding all the way to Caledon on the N2 would be a problem. It's not a freeway after all, but I can't remember offhand if the dual carriageway past Bot River is a freeway. Nobody challenged me about riding on that stretch, though.

As an aside, the R43 from the N2 to Villiersdorp is about 35 km and quite nice in a Honda S2000 or similar, but can be pretty draining on a bicycle on a hot day. I once referred to it as the worst 30-odd km of my life. On reflection, it's actually not that bad and the surface is OK. But there's no hard shoulder, traffic tends to be light but fast, and the hills are big and mostly upwards.

The N2 from Grabouw towards Caledon is great to ride!! Pretty wide shoulder all the way. We ride it all the time from Hermanus to Grabouw and back, or from Hermanus towards Caledon and then take the Greyton turnoff. Not sure how legal it is though? I often ride past traffic cops at the bottom of Houw Hoek pass and have never been stopped....

You are allowed to cycle on the N2; it is not a freeway anywhere along that section. You can stop in Riviersonderend for a pie at Die Ou Meul bakery.

Or you can turn off through Caledon and do the 50-odd k's to Napier. Good road, nice shoulder not all that busy.

Or turn of that road at Van Brakel's and cycle towards Stanford (not sure what you will do once you get there, the road from there to Hermanus is pretty narrow and busy).

Most of the N2 there is not a highway and therefor pretty legal to cycle on. I have driven on that road a few times lately and always thougth that I should come and cycle there. However the Houwhoek Pass might be a highway for a few kilometers. Check the traffic signs. It somehow rings a bell for me. Should that be the case then off course it would be illegal to cycle on it. Whether the cops allow it is one things. Wether your insurance and medical aid will pay should you be hit by a car there is another.
