WHY now of all times? Why me?

I'm getting sick and tired of being sick all the time. Since the beginning of July, its been 4 times. Just started training last week after anti-biotics. Long ride on Saturday. Woke up this morning with a sore throat, swollen glands on side of throat, the usual sh*t.

Have to go to dr to get checked out. My main worry is that Karoo to Coast is in less than three weeks. I take immunity boosters watch my diet. What more to do?

I really want to do this race. Do I stop completely? Do I just resume training but at very low intensity? What?

Please help a brother here, Hubbers

Rudo, it may just be bad luck. Some comments:

1. Diet can be a factor. If you take in less kJs than you need, your immune system takes more pressure.

2. Allergy - if you combine lots of exercise with post nasal drip problems, it develops into something worse. Try taking one Deselex tablet per day for a while.

3. Hard training also affects the immune system. Avoid sick people (lift, cinema, places like that) as far as you can.

A Beriglobin injection. It is somewhat contraversial in that it is produced from human blood - do some research and make a decision. The jury is still out on whether extra human imunoglobin actually helps but my doctor recommended it and it worked for me...

I spent R1000's of Rands on blood tests, appointments, antibiotics etc after going through 3 months of colds and flu. 1 Beriglobin injection later and so far almost 3 weeks or solid trining without so much as a sniffle.

Eish Rudo, not lekka.

I got sick earlier this year June , then three weeks ago I was diagnosed with swine flu, I have now had a middle ear infection from hell since Saturday with a stiff neck and swollen glands :(

Hope you recover for K2C.

Hi Rudo

You don't perhaps have small todlers at home, or lots of contact with the little snot noses? I found that for a few years when my kids were small they brought every single bug home from preschool and I had one bout of flu after the other.

Christie: yes the Deselex is an option and I have been trying to shed a few kg's

Eldron: read what u said on other threads abouy that stuff, will talk to dr and hear what she says. One thing I know is that something must happen NOW

Dangle: long time no see!sounds like u had it much worse than me. Thanks for the reality check man. Hope u recover quick too.

I'm just desperate. After doing the Jock twice years ago and being lazy and lardy the next few years, this K2C was my 1st challenge of a few "projects" I have lined up. A lot of effort has gone into preparing for this. And although there is much left to be done, I'm fitter than I've been in years.

I will take today off as well, and hear what the clever people has to say. Still need to put in some training as leaving until the 25th would not be a very good idea.

Ok, my rant is over...hopefully u will see a "rave" on the 26th!

YES! One sweet, awesome little angel of a 2 and half year old boy...explains a lot. And he's all over me all the time..Dad's the hero!

Be careful about taking too many anti-biotics. Doctors prescribe them all the time for whatever and it is NOT necessarily a good thing. Your body needs to learn how to fight off these bugs etc on its own. This of course is not always possible. I never take anti-biotics. On Friday night I went down like a ton of bricks fever, sweating, sore throat, muscles, glands the whole number. Spent the whole weekend in bed sweating thinking there was something major attacking me. Woke up Monday morning feeling 95%. Sore throat gone, zero snotty nose, no head cold. Today 99% back to training.

Another thing to be careful of is taking large doses of vitamins "C" especially when your body is not used to it. I find it has exactly the opposite effect. STRANGE but very true in my case. Friday was yet another case in point. Medically I cannot explain it I'm not a doctor but I been around the block a few times and am talking from experience.

As previous hubber said you need to eat. Make sure its a balanced diet and yes some fat is good. Looking like an Ethiopian may make you lighter but its not a good thing. Boerewors rolls always sort this issue out smile.gif

Dont overdo training. Quality not quantity.

RudoJ,

I had the same problem for the most of the first half this year. Ended up with an ENT specialist who sorted me out quickly. I had a chronic sinusitis which turned acute. Would end up with sore throat and glands and then start couching. course of anti-b followed but everytime I would end up with same symptoms again. This happened 5 times from Feb to June this year!!

Problem with sinusitis is that course of anti-b clears up acute infection, but does not sort out the chronic sinusitis (allergies or blockage) , so that just turns acute again once effect of anti-b has worn out. Build up of mucus causes infection which spreads to your airways. Mine ended up being a physical blockage of drainage pathways, but a lot of people get away with a sinus rince only. I use a topical cortisone daily.

I have been perfectly healthy ever since.............

if you've had the flu, which has been doing double rounds of late, it's a slight reoccurence that presents itself after you've exerted yourself. I'd say go with light/maintenance intensity levels of exercise, but keep yourself warm afterward. The bug seems quite opportunistic, and tends to present with typical flu-like symptoms after exercise. Keep warming, eating properly and all that will help mitigate those effects.

Takes about 3 - 4 weeks to clear up properly.

Buy a bottle of hand sanitizer! I have one that lives on my desk!

Every time someone shakes my hand or I have to use lifts, open high traffic doors, etc. I sanitize my hands when I return to the office.

The whole of winter I was healthy except for this last weekend when I had mild flu which has already subsided!

I know its a bit OCD, but it kept me on the trails the whole of winter!

I've been struggling the same as you except its always my sinus. Rode the Houwhoek tour while still recovering from bronchitis, Knysna I was sick as well, damn annoying. Hoping I stay healthy for K2C.

I got sick and tired of repeated sinus infections (I've been sick more than healthy this year) and finally saw a specialist and had a CT scan done. He reckons that the doctors didn't give me antibiotics for long enough to kill everything so the strong ones survived and then mutiplied making each course of anti-biotics less affective So, I've now been on a full month of anti-biotics and cortisone nasal spray - first time I can breathe a little through my nose in years. Going for a follow up CT Scan on Friday and then they will decide whether to operate (my nose is skew from breaking it and I've also got something called Polyps.).

If I was you, I'd ease up on the training until K2C. Give your body time to recover fully and then you will be fresh and healthy for the ride.

I think we've all had a winter like that - for some reason it just happens. For example, apparently what we call 'the common cold' is the standard set of symptoms caused by a possible 200 different kinds of virus. So almost impossible to develop immunities to all.

Anyway, if I was you I would go by the rule of thumb that as long as it doesn't go below the neck (i.e. into the chest) then I would continue with very light training. Long, slow sessions where you're just turning the pedals over. You can do long rides like this and not tax the heart at all. The aim is just to keep some of the muscle memory and to keep the blood & nutrients moving through your cycling muscles. This helps to limit any loss in fitness. You might be 'off' in terms of speed and fine tuning, but at least you're limiting the loss. Just bundle up - rather be too hot on the ride than a little too cold.

Alright since this is a bitch and moan thread - here goes!

I won an entry into the otter trail run.

Now if you know anything about trail running you will know this is the one.

The trail only gets run once a year and the field is a select 300.

You don't just get to enter, I know people who've waited years to get into that race.

Also it attracts the world elite trail runners as it is an incredibly and prestigious event.

So I was incredibly lucky to get in and super stoked about the event.

And then - stress fracture - left foot.

So no running for me, no training no racing.

This is the MOTHER of all bitches!

RudoJ, I read somewhere that the best prevention is Vitamin-C, they say that you can take up to 1000MG on one day for ONE day....when you feel the onset of a cold.

BUT more importantly, if you have sick people around you, dont toutch your eyes! Wash you hands often but keep away from your face unless you have JUST washed your hands properly....they say that most viruses etc enters your body via your eyes, you get it on your hands and rub your eyes and there you go.

I keep some of that handi-kleen stuff with me and often just do a quick "dry" kleen.....just in-case.

Hope you get better soon......
